Know These Facts About Uterine Fibroids!

MBBS, DNB (Obstetrics & Gynecology), (MRCOG)
Gynaecologist, Chennai
Know These Facts About Uterine Fibroids!

Uterine fibroids are abnormal growth that manifests in the uterus of the woman. Hormones is the usual causes listed for such a growth. And usually seen in young women. Starts to shrink after menopause. The most common symptoms of the condition include heavy bleeding during the menstrual cycle, as well as severe pain during periods. This depends on location of the fibroid. They are not familial. Can occur in anyone. Uterine fibroids occur in 20-40% of reproductive-aged women. They grow in response to estrogen stimulation and regress after menopause.

Leiomyomas are smooth muscle tumors that form in the uterine wall. The development and growth of uterine fibroids are influenced by multiple factors including autocrine and paracrine growth factors, genetic abnormalities, race, and environmental estrogen exposure related to age of menarche, obesity, and parity. The precise causes is not known. Although myomas are common, relatively few actually cause symptoms. Whether symptoms are present depends largely on a combination of size, number, and location of the myomas. In general, myoma growth is a result of the stimulation of estrogen, which is present until menopause. Over time, previously asymptomatic myomas may grow and become symptomatic. Conversely, many myomas begin to shrink as menopause removes the estrogen stimulation and many myoma-related symptoms resolve spontaneously shortly after menopause.

Medications are used for the symptoms produces, like pain meds, those to control bleeding etc. Medicines to shrink its size are sometimes used before surgery, to make them accessible by laparoscopy, instead of open surgery. Fibroids never become cancerous!! Though surgery is commonly advised/performed, it it at times unnecessary.

Surgery is needed in the following situations:

  1. It is very large, and therefore causing pressure on surrounding organs.
  2. It is close to inner lining of uterus and causing excess pain and bleeding during periods, which are uncontrolled with medicines.
  3. Due to its location, it is causing recurrent miscarriages. In most situations, surgery is not needed for fibroids.

I am 26 years old. I am unmarried I am having breast pain issue both side as I am having small cyst in both breast. I have done mammography as well. It has been found as benign tumor. Also fibroidscyst. My breast got tenderness and painful due to this then my gynaec suggest me to take episoft daily 1 for three months with sevista 30 mg for alternate days. Due to this my breast is not having pain now but I have delayed periods. After completion of this course will my periods will be normal as earlier and when will I get rid of this?

Please stop Sevista. And you should get periods soon. Dont ever take it again. Some girls/women have the kind of breast tissue, where cysts and fibrous tissue occur more often. Understand that this is not harmful, just inconvenient. Just apple some pain balm when pain is too much. Nothing more is needed. This happens especially due to hormone changes that happen in your body through the month. Suppressing the hormone activity is not the answer. You need to learn to manage it. So stop Sevista. and start managing your symptoms. Please send me a message with any further queries.

The tablet is unnecessary. Low lying placenta is seen in many pregnancies, in the first trimester. In 97% cases it will move up as the baby grows and uterus increases in size. You will have scans in 5th month, and again close to 8th month to check position of placenta. The advised treatment is to avoid sex, and strenuous activities. No medications help.

I have 4 weeks old second baby. I feel milk is not sufficient as he demands for milk every hour and I feel my breasts are always soft and milk never over flows from breasts. If I give him formula on top of breastfeed he takes it. But I don’t want to use formula. How will I increase my milk supply. I am taking lactare since delivered but not of much use. During my first delivery there was no milk and my first child was completely on formula.

Hi Firstly please relax. Stress is a major factor in reducing milk supply. Remember all mammals produce enough milk for any number of babies they produce. It is good that you do not want to use supplements, and want to breast feed. Remember the following points: 1) Baby is only 4 weeks old. Both of you are learning. Enjoy the sensation of holding and talking to the baby. Feed him every 2 hours. He may suck a few times, and sleep, and again wake up, suck and sleep. Squeeze milk from your breast onto the baby's lips and let him learn to suck 2) Breast need to feel heavy for everyone and all the time. Massage the breasts and feed the baby. The more the baby sucks, and the more you relax, more milk will be produced. 3) Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. Garlic, oats, fenugreek are all said to increase milk flow. Include them in your diet. 4) Do not bother about people telling you milk might not be enough. Breast heaviness, and milk overflow does not happen to every woman. And baby crying does not mean hunger. It can mean wet nappies, need to burp, and simply need to be held. You can personal message me if you have further doubts. Take care. Enjoy motherhood.

Hi lybrate-user Frequent urination has nothing to do with PCOS. It could be due to urine infection. Get a urine routine and culture test done. At 24 years this is the most probable cause.

Hi Any cyst less than 7 cm will disappear on its own. Do not worry about it. Does not have any connection to getting pregnant.
