Love Your Heart - 15 Ways You Can Keep it Healthy

PGD IN ULTRAASONOGRAPHY, Non invasive cardiology course, MD - Medicine, MBBS

Love Your Heart - 15 Ways You Can Keep it Healthy

Let's understand the function of our heart and how to keep it healthy! Our heart is a muscular organ, located just behind and slightly left of the breast bone. It pumps blood through the network of arteries and veins called the cardiovascular system.

The heart has four chambers:

  1. The right atrium receives blood from the veins and pumps it to the right ventricle.
  2. The right ventricle receives blood from the right atrium and pumps it to the lungs, where it is loaded with oxygen.
  3. The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to the left ventricle.
  4. The left ventricle (the strongest chamber) pumps oxygen rich blood to the rest of the body. The left ventricle’s vigorous contractions create our blood pressure. The foods you eat, the amount of activity you do as well as your lifestyle can dramatically affect the overall health of your heart along with many other tissues that make up your cardiovascular system. Unhealthy eating habits can lead to various Heart Disorders.

Let’s look at the ways to keep it healthy!

  1. Healthy mind healthy body, so it is important that you take peaceful 7 to 8 hours of sleep.
  2. Keep yourself out of stress, involve yourself in regular some stress buster activities.
  3. Keep a check on your Blood Pressure.
  4. Cut your saturated fat intake and make an effort to check the ingredients of your intake. Too much of bad cholesterol can clog the heart and arteries with dangerous plaque.
  5. Keep a control on your blood sugar level.
  6. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, if you're doing nothing, do something and if you're doing something, do extra.
  7. Eat more fruit and less fruit juice.
  8. Control obesity and keep your body mass index(BMI) in controlled level to be fit.
  9. Quit smoking as soon as you can and get yourself into having something else that you like at regular intervals, which is healthy.
  10. Cut your calorie intake and cut your sugar sweetened soda and keep check on all your sweet temptations.
  11. Eat lot of Seafood.
  12. Find ways to keep yourself happy and out of worries, be with lively people.
  13. Breathe slowly and deeply for a few minutes a day.
  14. Get yourself into Yoga.
  15. Keep a regular check of your hearth health under your doctor’s guidance.

Leave aside all your worries! Have a Healthy Heart and a Healthy Life!

Diastolic BP should be 80 or less. 85 is above normal. Body weight of 95kg is high; reducing body weight, avoiding fast foods with high fat content and regular exercise should bring down the BP to normal.

Try loosing weight by diet, otherwise go for surgery, remember every surgery carries some risks. Doctors cannot recommend many exercises, you need to eat healthy with lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables, little fats, less carbs but more proteins like toned milk.

CREATININE RATIO= 8.53, HDL CHOLESTEROL - DIRECT = 34 mg/dl, LDL CHOLESTEROL - DIRECT = 79 mg/dl, eosinophil = 12.6% I am 35 years old with acute asthma and weak lungs but have never had any cardiac related issues so far. Apart from the cholesterol test none of these tests will help evaluate the cause of pain so that you can rule out if it is from heart. For that please get a ecg, echo, TMT and chest x-ray AP view done. If these tests are normal then your pain is unlikely from heart disease, if there is some problem in these reports then please consult a cardiologist. Your LDL cholesterol is fine. Your Eosinophil percentage is very high, likely due to some allergy issues but this should be further evaluated and that is probably why your CRP and apoliprotein is also high, so for eosinophil counts should consult an internal medicine specialist for further evaluation and treatment.

If you're a smoker, quit. It's the single best thing you can do for your heart health.

Smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease.

A year after giving up, your risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker.

Dear lybrate user, - In this congenital disorder the aortic valve has two cusps instead of the normal four from birth - the progress in life depends on if some problem develops due to the valve & the child becomes symptomatic, there may not be any problem till adulthood - later on can be corrected by surgery.

I am suffering from chest pain and head ache and head spinning. please give reason and remedies.

There can be many other causes, including Other heart problems, such as angina Panic attacks Digestive problems, such as heartburn or esophagus disorders Sore muscles Lung diseases, such as pneumonia, pleurisy, or pulmonary embolism Costochondritis - an inflammation of joints in your chest Some of these problems can be serious. Get immediate medical care if you have chest pain that does not go away, crushing pain or pressure in the chest, or chest pain along with nausea, sweating, dizziness or shortness of breath. I am a 47 years female with hypothyroidism (Since 10 years), diabetes (since 3 years) and hypertension. hypothyroidism is due to hashimoto where antibodies are present and presently taking Selenium supplement to reduce antibodies. Taking Eltroxin 125 mcg daily as thyroid replacement. My Diabetes is as such well controlled, my last HbA1c was 6.3% which has increased from 6.1% and I found that my PPBS stays higher especially after breakfast. It goes beyond 200 mg/dl. Sometimes even around 290! I have discovered that same thing if I eat in lunch, PPBS is less around 140-150 or sometimes even less than 120 mg/dl. PPBS after dinner is between the two ranges. I.e. Around 160-180. My main question is whether it is advisable to eliminate wheat and rice completely from the diet to reduce PPBS levels? It is difficult to do that since it is our staple diet and is contained in all items. I am taking Metformin 1 g morning and evening and skip taking Metformin when I avoid dinner. I am also taking Diabecon DS tablet which is shown to reduce FBS and PPBS levels considerably because I confirmed it by stopping it for about 10 days, though I was taking Metformin, my FBS and PPBS levels shoots up like anything. Once I started taking Diabecon DS again, both FBS and PPBS levels reduced considerably. My last fasting insulin was 9.93 and fasting glucose 100 mg/dl gave 1.33 as Insulin resistance and 90% Beta cell function by Homa 2 calculator as found on internet which is widely used to measure IR. Now, people who advocate Low Carbohydrate High Fat diet on diabetes forum, says residual circulating insulin should be reduced for which you need to lower your carbohydrate intake. I was told that fasting insulin should be <5 and if Blood sugar control is difficult with this value, it can be <7 but not more than that as more insulin causes more fat storage and ultimately pancreas are whipped to secrete insulin by some drugs. I was taking Glycomet GP-1 forte once in the morning but was getting hypoglycemia since 6 months due to glimepiride in it which was increasing insulin levels, so stopped taking it and now not getting any hype episodes. It is known from various research sites on internet that Gymnema extract (Meshashringi, Gurmar) is very effective in reducing FBS and PPBS levels, but increase insulin levels. So, is it advisable to take Gymnema extract (Ayurvedic medicine) which helps a lot in reducing FBS and PPBS levels? I am taking Arkamin for hypertension once in the morning. So, my question is, is it necessary to reduce carbohydrate intake to 20% which comes to around 100g of carbs each day? People say, since we diabetics cannot process carbs efficiently, we need to reduce it's consumption to around 100g or less for good diabetic control. What should be ideal PPBS level after meals? And What should be fasting insulin level?
