Whenever a couple opts for IVF, the main question in their mind is that will it be successful? The chances depend on a number of factors, the most important one being the quality of eggs. If the eggs are not good, they will not be able to get fertilized, or even if they get fertilized the embryo they will form will be abnormal. Thus to be precise, IVF treatment requires a successful embryo implantation which can be only possible if the eggs are good. Thus, directly or indirectly, the egg quality influences the success of IVF treatment. If an embryo looks good, it does not mean that the implantation will be carried out successfully. Many internal factors too contribute to the quality of eggs and thus the success of IVF treatment. These factors are discussed below.
Hormonal imbalance is one of the most widespread reasons behind many problems, and IVF treatment is no exception. When a woman is reported to have more than normal levels of the Follicle Stimulating Hormone or FSH on the third day of her menstrual cycle, then a popular term is used by the doctors, that is, “diminishes ovarian reserve.” What does this really mean? This means that the woman’s eggs are not healthy. Although they would look healthy and even get fertilized normally.
Not only this but they will also experience embryonic cleavage in a totally normal way. But the difference is that they won’t divide further beyond the eight-celled stage and implantation is impossible. What happens is that the ovaries do not produce enough signals that are required and the pituitary gland does not receive the signals that it should. So the body synthesizes more FSH to stimulate the ovaries. This ultimately leads to a diminished ovarian reserve and thus a decreased egg quality. Since implantation is not possible, IVF becomes a failure.
Advancing age of the woman
Imbalance in the FSH levels is not the only reason behind IVF failure. Even if the levels are okay, the age of the woman may also lead to failure. You must be wondering why. So here is the answer to your question. With age, the spindle fiber gets broken, and thus the chromosomes are not separated equally. This leads to unequal division of the chromosomes. Ultimately the eggs become abnormal genetically, and the embryo that results from them become abnormal too.
IVF success relies on a number of factors and egg quality is just one of them. But it is also one of the crucial factors. Speak to your doctor and be sure from beforehand about your egg quality so that your efforts do not go waste.

PCOD or polycystic Ovary Disorder is one of the most common disorders of hormones among women in the age of reproduction. It is yet not discovered why some women become susceptible to this disease and it is believed to be a genetic disorder. The word “polycystic” refers to multiple cysts and a woman suffering from PCOD has multiple cysts in her ovary. This is due to the imbalance of hormones, which don’t allow the ovary to release eggs every month and these numerous unreleased eggs present in the ovary cause it to become polycystic.
What are the symptoms of PCOD?
The regular release of eggs from the ovaries directs a woman’s fertility and allows her to have a normal menstrual cycle. Therefore, women with PCOD face difficulty in conceiving along with irregular, low and absent periods. Some of the most common symptoms of PCOD include infertility and even miscarriage, elevated insulin levels, high blood pressure, diabetes, acne, unhealthy weight gain and obesity. It also leads to loss of hair from the scalp and excessive growth of hair on the body. This is due to over production of male hormones that lead to male pattern of growth of hair, such as on chest, cheek, chin and inner thighs. The hormonal imbalance leads to weight gain and obesity makes the hormonal imbalance even worse, turning it into a vicious cycle.
How is PCOD diagnosed and treated?
Your gynaecologist would be able to determine whether you have PCOD by checking your symptoms. Then she would recommend you to do a few blood tests along with a pelvic ultrasound scan to confirm whether you have PCOD. Though this disease is not reversible, its symptoms may be reduced or minimised. Most women can lead a trouble-free and healthy life if they take proper precautions at the right time.
It has been pointed in several studies that reduction in weight can help in the improvement of most PCOD symptoms because fat contributes to the production of certain hormones. Your doctor will prepare a treatment plan depending on the aspect from which you are suffering. For instance, if you are suffering from irregular periods, your doctor may prescribe you some contraceptives which can help in restoring normal menstrual cycle. But this treatment is definitely unsuitable for those who are trying to conceive. The infrequent and irregular ovulation can make it difficult to conceive and it can be artificially induced with the aid of medications. So, you must consult a gynaecologist to help your situation.
In a nut shell PCOD is treatable. One should neither get disappointed nor depressed, but should not ignore.

I had my first IUI failed this month and AF arrived I was very depressed. Now heading towards second IUI hoping to get BFP. My first IUI was with clomid and injectable (HMG) and trigger shot (HCG). And there were 4 follicles of good size 20 mm. After the trigger egg rupture was late almost after 48 hours and IUI was done at 60th hour. My gums could see the ruptured follicle and also the fluid after rupture was seen on ultrasound then only she headed to IUI. She later kept me on progesterone supportive for 14 days. Was the timing an issue? What was wrong in this first try which resulted in failure? Can anyone succeeded who can share the tips which helped them to bring success to IUI.
