Black marks or teeth are mostly due to decay. If the decay is deep, root canal treatment followed by cap is necessary. Attach the x-ray of tooth, if you have. For precaution, brush twice daily. Limit your food intake to 4-5 times a day. Forcefully gargle with water after you eat or drink anything. Avoid sweet sticky foods.

Hi lybrate-user. The dentist may be advising you to remove it as a broken teeth has more chances of getting infected and then the infection may spread to other teeth. So better remove it and take an implantation.

The angle of my left jaw is not similar to right one. There is an extension, on clinching it extends outwards. I have gone through tests like FNAC, ultrasound, X-ray, also CT scan. But in all these there is everything normal. It is about since 5 years ago, but tested recently. What should I do? Please suggest me.

MDS Prosthodontics, BDS
Dentist, Delhi
Facial assymetry can be normal at times. May be you have hyperactive masseter muscle on the left side. One has to go for emg of muscles of mastication. But before that clinical evaluation is needed.

Can Your Toothbrush Make You Ill?

BDS, MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Advanced course in maxillofacial sugery

Can Your Toothbrush Make You Ill?

Did you know that your tooth brush could be home of over a million bacteria including the flu virus, E coli, staph and yeast fungus? But, can your tooth brush really make you fall ill? Luckily, our immune system ensures that toothbrushes do not make us ill. However, in rare cases, the bacteria on a toothbrush can get past our defenses.

The problem lies in how a toothbrush is stored. The bathroom is humid and moist making it the best place for bacteria to multiply. Storing a toothbrush near the toilet further adds to the problem. Here are a few tips to make your toothbrush healthier.

  1. Wash your hands before and after brushing. Also rinse your toothbrush well before putting toothpaste on it. Using hot water is better than cold water.
  2. Change your toothbrush every three months or whenever the bristles are worn out; whichever comes first. In addition, also change your toothbrush after recovering from any illness. If you use an electric toothbrush, change the head every 3-4 months. Children’s brushes need to be changed more often than adult’s toothbrushes.
  3. Do not share a toothbrush and avoid storing toothbrushes together. If the bristles touch each other, germs could move from one toothbrush to the other.
  4. Toothbrush caps may not be as good an idea as they seem as it traps moisture inside and does not allow the brush to dry properly. Instead, keep your brush submerged in hydrogen peroxide or any alcohol based mouthwash.
  5. Do not store your toothbrush horizontally. Your toothbrush should always be stored vertically with the brush side on top.
  6. When travelling, if you use a toothbrush cap, allow the brush to dry completely before putting the cap on.
  7. Store your toothbrush away from the toilet and away from the sink such that it cannot get contaminated form water that splashes when you wash your hands or face.
  8. If possible, store your toothbrush in your medicine cabinet.
  9. Always put the cover down before flushing the toilet. This will reduce the number of air borne bacteria that can attach themselves to your toothbrush,
  10. Along with your toothbrush also clean out your toothbrush holder regularly.
  11. Do not try sterilizing your toothbrush in a microwave. Toothbrushes are not designed to withstand extreme temperatures and hence this could damage your toothbrush.
  12. Use a mouthwash after brushing to rinse out any bacteria that may be left behind form your teeth or your toothbrush. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dentist.

Getting hunger panks in between the RCT is surely not a good idea. Eat a good meal before the treament as it can take close to 3 hours sometimes.

I suffer from wisdom tooth problem, wherein the tooth completely inside the gum and the flaps of the gums are slowly opening. I have already undergone a wisdom tooth extraction surgery in the past almost a year back and have well aware about the after effects of the surgery which is really painful. I do not wish to go through the same trauma. Hence want to know any other option or medication apart from surgery.

Dear lybrate-user, if your wisdom tooth is not erupting properly as surrounding ones and it is indeed painful and cause damage to the just next tooth behind it you must go for surgical extraction. Otherwise your safe. Just do warm saline mouth bathe 2-4times daily and rinse your mouth with some antiplaque mouthwash for better result.

Indications for Root Canal Treatment

Diploma In Cosmetic Dentistry, Advanced Aesthetics, BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
Indications for Root Canal Treatment

Having your dentist say to you that you need a root canal, can be a daunting affair. This means that the pulp or soft tissue inside a tooth has been damaged by bacterial infection. A root canal involves removing the damaged pulp, cleaning the infection and filling in the emptied space. Not every tooth infection requires a root canal and hence it is essential to know the indication of a root canal.

Here are a few situations when a root canal may be needed:

  1. Pain: Discomfort ranging from a dull ache to a sharp pain can be a sign that you need root canal treatment. This type of pain is usually characterized by throbbing and may change as you switch positions. It is usually triggered by chewing, applying pressure on the tooth or eating something cold or hot. In some cases, the patient may not be able to indicate the exact tooth that is hurting but can only identify the painful area.
  2. Gun tendernessSwelling that indicates the need of root canal treatment can range from being slightly red and inflamed to pronounced lumps on the gums. In some extreme cases, this swelling may extend out of the gums into the face and neck region. Sometimes, a pus filled boil with a pimple like head may also form on the gums. If this head bursts, the patient may notice a foul taste in the mouth. This swelling can come and go as the tooth decay deteriorates and may or may not be accompanied by pain. Teeth may also feel like they have been pushed out of their sockets and are taller than usual.
  3. Tooth discolouration: Discolouring of teeth can be a sign of internal tooth damage. This is especially noted if the teeth take on a dark yellow, grey or blackish tint. Tooth discolouration is fairly common in cases where the tooth has undergone trauma such as an accident etc.
  4. Exposure of the dental nerves: At times during regular dental work, the nerves in the tooth may be exposed. This indicates an exposure of pulp tissue and can trigger pulp degeneration if left untreated.

However, all of the above symptoms can be symptoms of other types of dental problems as well and do not necessarily individually indicate the need for a root canal. Only a dentist can properly diagnose a need for root canal treatment after a physical examination and testing.

Yellow stains develop on teeth due to habit of smoking; tobacco, gutka alcohol and betel like things. Stop taking these if you take. Bleaching is the best option to get rid of stains. Mix lemon juice and soda bi carb, rub on stained teeth gently once in a week.

During orthodontic treatment, suffering from pain and soreness in the mouth is quite common. To lessen the degree of it, the patient can gargle with  8 ounces of lukewarm water with one teaspoonful of salt dissolved in it. It will surely dull the pain and provide some relief.

I am 21 year male, i've sensitivity problem in my teeth! I can't even drink normal water! what should I do?

You can try following tips- -brush and floss regularly. Use proper brushing and flossing techniques to thoroughly clean all parts of your teeth and mouth. -use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brush gently and carefully around the gum line so you don? t remove gum tissue. -use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Several brands are available. Regular use should make teeth less sensitive. You may need to try several brands to find the product that works best for you. Another tip: spread a thin layer on the exposed tooth roots with your finger or a q-tip before you go to bed. Use a fluoridated toothpaste, not a tartar control one. -avoid lots of highly acidic foods and drinks. -use fluoridated dental products. Using a fluoridated mouth rinse daily can decrease sensitivity. -don? t grind your teeth. Use a mouth guard at night. -see your dentist every 6 months (or sooner, depending on your condition). If you still have discomfort, talk to your dentist. There may be a procedure that can help. He might recommend: -white fillings (bonding) to cover exposed root surfaces -fluoride varnishes applied to the exposed root surface -dentin sealers applied to the exposed root surface.
