There is nothing called "behaving like a gay" He might very well be bisexual and that's a perfectly normal sexual identity.

I'm 23 years old male. I'm unable to pronounce the letters r, re,RU, ir pls help me to find the solutions pls.

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
One of the main reasons for difficulty to pronounce is fear and anxiety. Reduce your speed of speech for now, thus the pronouncing difficulty would decrease and fluency of your speech would become better. When fluency of speech reaches normal, then you gradually increase speed of speech, thus the overall speech can become as original. Because stress and anxiety increases difficulty of speech, you should also do transcendental meditation. How meditation affects health? it has been scientifically proved that meditation not only helps the mind but also body because controlled mind and purification of consciousness leads to better lifestyle and improved habits of food, sleep etc which in turn leads to better overall health. Most diseases have their roots in uncontrolled mind and impure consciousness. So do transcendental meditation by finding and reading iskcon books, either from internet and/or from your nearest iskcon center. Hope this helps,

Stress and Stuttering - How to Deal with It?

MD, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Stress and Stuttering - How to Deal with It?

Stuttering is a type of speech disorder wherein, a person speaks slower than normal. It is quite  common in the age group of 3 to 8. The relationship between stress and stuttering has been pondered over for decades now. A lot of people seem to believe that stress and stuttering are co-related. On the contrary, recent studies show that stress is more of a consequence rather than a cause of stuttering. If you take the first theory into consideration, then according to that, children would be the greatest victims of anxiety and stress. But it is seen that the level of stress increases proportionately with the increase in age.

Social anxiety in teenagers increases due to stuttering, when they come across individuals who can speak in a normal pace. This in turn can crush their self confidence and lead them to isolate themselves from social groups and people in general. Hence, it is important to deal with stuttering in the early ages or as and when it occurs.

Sometimes stuttering can develop due to physical or mental trauma.  Most people with stuttering do not seek therapy for it because they might not think of it to be too severe. Little do they realise that a simple process of speech therapy can help them overcome this disability and rejuvenate their level of self-confidence.

It has also come to light, that people with relapse in stuttering post therapy has shown a three-fold increase in anxiety levels than normal. Hence we cannot ignore the strong relationship between stress and stuttering. So from the above evidence, it is safe to conclude that social anxiety or stress develops as a result of chronic stuttering.

How to deal with stress related to stuttering?

Seeking help is a great start to tackle your disability. If your stuttering is prominent enough to warrant therapy, you must seek professional help for the same. You must also learn to control your anxiety by dismissing any anxious thought or make sincere efforts in controlling physical anxiety.

You can also try to increase your social skills by participating in events, such as public speaking that can reduce your stress levels and make yourself more confident about yourself. One must also remember that a person is defined by what he does rather than what he says. So never let a minor disability come in the way of your self worth! If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

When I speak to people. They cannot hear my voice properly. They said me that you have bad sound. But in the past I was able to speak clearly but now what has happened with me. I have cough also. What should I do now?

Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (B.A.S.L.P)

Go for voice evaluation by an audiologist, because there is something wrong with your vocal system i. E. Infection in larynx due to which you r suffering from dry cough and voice problem, which is unpleasant for listeners. So try to talk less, drink luke-warm water, avoid throat clearing, avoid tea, coffee, too much shouting etc. For voice conservation.

My brother is having a stammering problem from his childhood. Now,he is 25 years old and is a doctor. But that problem is not gone. We have shown him to the ENT doctors and they have concluded that there is no defect in his throat. That problem has taken a mental illness and he is under total depression and not ready to do further studies and always remains in angry mood. We have also shown him to the speech therapists but it is of no use for his problem. How can his problem be tackled efficiently and effectively?

M.Phil clinical psychology

Stammering could have neurological, medical or psychological causal factors. Consult a neurologist first and get all investigations if it is a neurological problem. Sometimes, due to anxiety also people have trouble like this and stammering is the result. For psychological reason, consult a clinical psychologist who may use behavior therapy principles in its treatment management. Lastly, I would also like to tell you sometimes due to such problems, people develop depression and stress as they have difficulty in normal conversation and they feel frustrated. So dealing with frustration is also important point to be kept in mind in their treatment option.

Let your mind relax. Think about someone you feel comfortable talking with. Start talking softly. Visualize thoughts and words to stop stammering. Slow down your speed of speaking. Do relaxation and breathing exercises. Consult speech pathologist.

Cerebral Palsy (CP) - How Speech Therapy Can Help You?

D.H.L.S, B.A.S.L.P, M.A, B.Ed .SE . ( H.I )
Speech Therapist, Delhi
Cerebral Palsy (CP) - How Speech Therapy Can Help You?

ÏCerebral Palsy (CG) is a neurological disorder caused by an injury to the brain or a brain malformation that occurs while the child’s brain is still developing – in the mother’s womb before birth, during birth, or immediately after birth.

This disorder affects the child’s movement and muscle coordination and control. It also affects his:

  1. Reflexes
  2. Balance
  3. Posture
  4. Motor skills and
  5. Oral motor functions

In easy to understand language, CG can impact the child’s ability to walk, talk, sit, do simple tasks like eating, combing hair, talking, and other activities we take for granted. The physical impairment caused by cerebral palsy can affect all limbs, the face and head, or it may just affect one limb. Since CG affects muscles and a child’s ability to control them, common symptoms include muscles that contract too much, too little, or all at the same time, leading to limbs that are stiff and forced into awkward positions. Other complications also arise such as intellectual impairment, seizures, or vision/ hearing and speech impairment.

How does Speech Therapy help?
Speech problems affect more than half of all children with cerebral palsy as they have difficulty controlling the muscles in their face, throat, neck and head. Apart from speaking, this also affects chewing and swallowing. It can also cause drooling and the ability to learn, difficulty hearing and understanding spoken language.

This is where speech and language therapy comes in. Speech therapy improves a child’s speech and communication by strengthening the muscles used for speech. It also improves understanding of speech and language as well as help with swallowing disorders, like dysphagia.

Speech therapy helps exponentially as when children improve their speech and communication, they are able to express their needs, share their thoughts and interact with others, leading to an overall improvement in their overall quality of life.

Speech therapy can help with the following:

  1. Listening
  2. Articulation of words
  3. Pronunciation
  4. Fluency
  5. Sound and word formation
  6. Language and vocabulary development
  7. Breath control
  8. Chewing
  9. Swallowing
  10. Speech muscle coordination

Apart from this, the other primary benefits are boosting self esteem, socialization, independence and reducing shyness.

Exercises used in Speech Therapy
Speech therapy treatment usually consists of exercises tailored to a child’s specific needs. Different exercises are used in speech therapy like:

  1. Articulation therapy: The therapist uses language cards to help focus attention on specific sounds to encourage the child to make sounds while looking in the mirror to help him understand how his mouth moves.
  2. Blowing exercises: The therapist encourages the child to blow bubbles or a whistle to train the mouth muscles to produce sounds.
  3. Breathing exercises: Work is exclusively on inhalation and exhalation to strengthen the diaphragm.
  4. Jaw exercises: The child is encouraged to eat foods that require extra chewing to strengthen jaw muscles.
  5. Language and word association: The therapist uses flashcards with different words and sounds written on them. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Speech Therapist.

You may try" speech therapy" please consult a speech therapist who will give you some exercises and it will help in reducing your stammer.
