Hearing Impairment in Children and Importance of Early Intervention

Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), MBBS
ENT Specialist, Kolkata
Hearing Impairment in Children and Importance of Early Intervention

Deafness in children is not an uncommon phenomenon. 1-3 infants per 1000 birth is born with congenital sensory disorder. This is much higher when conductive hearing losses both congenital and acquired are taken into account. There is lack of awareness about the gravity of the problem among general population and medical fraternity.

  • Children learn to communicate by imitating the sounds they hear. Deafness in the early months of life in a child deprives this valuable sensory input. This results in non development of speech or delayed speech/language development, social problems and academic difficulties.
  • The goal of early intervention is to integrate the deaf child into the family and into society, to ensure development of normal/near normal speech and to enable the growth and development of a healthy confident child.
  • Universal neonatal hearing screening (UNHS) can diagnose babies born with deafness. They can be treated with hearing aid or cochlear implant to restore their hearing and subsequently speech language therapy started as soon as possible.
  • Early intervention results in normal or near normal speech and the affected child can be integrated into the society.
  • The parents, doctors and the society should come together and work hand in hand for achieving this goal.

Please suggest. Migraine k liye kaun si medicine best rehti hai mere husband ki age 30 years.

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, MD - Anaesthesiology , PDCC - Pain Management
Pain Management Specialist,
Migraine usually occurs due to some stress factors. These factors may include: - fasting / staying hungry for long periods / irregular eating schedule - prolonged exposure to hot climate/sunlight - Exposure to loud noise - emotional outbursts - acidity/gas in few people Identity your stressor and avoid it. This in itself will lead to decrease in frequency of migraine episodes. Treatment for migraine episodes:- Tab. Crocin Pain Relief 1 tab when there is pain - Tab. Brufen 1 tab if headache severe & not controlled with crocin - If you have more than 5 episodes of migraine per month, then preventive treatment is required: Tab. Tryptomer 10 mg at daily bed time - Also, before starting any treatment, make sure it is migraine only and nothing else. Other causes of headache should be ruled out like, High BP, Decreased Eyesight etc.

When I put power my hands are shaking why it's happening and what can I do please help me.
If your hands are shaking almost any time. Then its a matter of concern. Consult a neurologist to treat the same. Stress, fatigue, and too much caffeine can worsen it. It can be due to other disores apart from relation to brain disorders like decrease sugar, thyroid disorders, anxiety, stress, genetic, nutritional deficiency and many more. Consult a specialist to find out the root cause.

I have recently started drinking alcohol (3 times) and its on 31st I tried a spirit (whisky) for the first time. I didn't drink much just about a 1 beer and 100 ml of whisky in a period of 3-4 hours. I experienced a reduced sensation or "numbness" on my face for some time. This was somewhat reduced when I woke up the next day and then it went away. Is this a normal side effect? Or should I see a doctor?

It's ok to experience this. These some of the effects of drinking alcohol. Check yourself for the same. The mentioned symptoms go away with the effect of alcohol. But if these worry you then you can choose to stop taking alcohol.
