Diet Tips After You Get Your Kidney Stones Removed

Kidney stones could be a cause for worry by the time they are not removed causing incessant and regular pains and disrupting normal life. The task is not finished even if you get them removed because what follows is a rigorous and disciplined routine that you must follow to maintain your health after the surgery is done. Diet plays a crucial role in negating the possibility of yet another stone accumulation. Here are a few diet tips that would be handy if you have got a kidney stones removal surgery done.

Do's

  1. To stay hydrated is the golden rule that you must abide by at all costs. It is advisable to drink at least 2-3 litres of water on a daily basis. Water prevents the formation of stones and would also help to eliminate any remaining residues of kidney stones existing in the system.
  2. Dairy products could be included but in diluted form.
  3. A fixed dietary routine is mandatory above all. The patient should be given meals at proper time intervals in small proportions. Heavy meals should be avoided at all costs.
  4. Foods rich in high fibre should be included in the diet. They help in bowel movement also. These include whole grain breads and beans.

Don'ts
 1. Foods rich in oxalates and calcium should be kept at bay for at least a period of two months after the stone removal procedure is complete. Oxalates can lead to the formation of yet another stone which is far from desirable. The foods that fall in this category include:

  • Green leafy vegetables like spinach, mustard and beet greens
  • Cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes
  • Banana, mango, apricot, grapes
  • Nuts like almond and cashew
  • Alcohol
  • Soft drinks
  • Soda
  • Caffeinated drinks like tea and coffee

2. Foods rich in sodium should be kept at bay for at least some time immediately after the surgery.

3. Reducing the food intake that is high on animal protein.

4. Do not eat stale food.

5. Junk food should not even cross your mind. It is something which should be avoided for best results.

These are generic guidelines that would help you to cope with post surgery care. However, there could be specific requirements depending from patient to patient. Therefore, it is advisable to get the guidelines by a doctor who will take into account the specificities of the case. Diet along with exercise is in most cases, the most effective combat to kidney stones. The trick however, is to not go overboard with either of them.

I have chronic constipation. What should i do? Please advise.

DBCM (AM) General Physician
Alternative Medicine,
I have chronic constipation. What should i do? Please advise.
Limit the amount of white bread, sugar, meat, junk food and milk products (cheese, milk, butter, cream.) and increasing fresh fruits, veggies, water and fiber (beans, oats,) also yogurt really helps due to the probiotics. Maybe you could do a food diary for a period, eliminate a couple of items at a time and build up until you have added enough other of good items to make the stools loose. Oatmeal helps out tremendously. Figure out the diet and once you've added enough good things, slowly pull back on the laxatives and pay attention as you go. This could be a food allergy, do some research, usually its lactose (dairy), nuts, sugar, food coloring, preservatives. Try to avoid boxed and processed foods which have more preservatives, calories, fat, high carb. Treatment is available, safe and without side effects in biochemic system of medication, consult me in private.

Adapting a healthy lifestyle is very important. Start exercising everyday as that is not only a great stress buster but also help in your digestion. Sleep for 7-8 hrs daily and do not change your sleep pattern. Eat healthy food and avoid junk food along with alcohol and tobacco. Learn to relax by doing some thing creative ( Yoga with pranayam and meditation can also be useful ). You can also use homeopathy if required after some time.

Hiv transfer rate via sexual intercourse is already less than 1%. So it carries less risk with single intercourse. If the partner was negative and you have tested negative out of window period of 3-6 months. You can be assured that you don't have hiv. Nevertheless you should repeat the check after 6 months more. Also, you should be more worried about hepatitis b as its transmission rate is more than 30% after sexual intercourse. Get hbsag australia antigen test done to check for your hepatitis b status. Revert back to me if any doubts.

My wife aged 49 post hysterectomy in 2011 not interested in sex. How should I pass my life.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
My wife aged 49 post hysterectomy in 2011 not interested in sex. How should I pass my life.
Some studies have shown that 10 to 40 percent of women experience a decrease in sexual response or libido following the operation. This may be related to a testosterone deficiency that can develop if the ovaries are removed, which in turn reduces the production of androgens. This imbalance can be treated through hormone therapy, including the use of natural testosterone creams applied vaginally. (Most hysterectomies spare the ovaries, however, thus sparing ovarian hormonal function.) Since contractions of the uterus can contribute to orgasm, some women report that they have more difficulty reaching a satisfying orgasm. Green tea has been shown to increase libido in women, counterbalancing the effects that aging has on women’s sexual health.

Dont take water after 8 pm, avoid evening tea/cofee/juice/liquor, wear loose and comfortable garments, protect yourself from cold environment, go to toilet immediately before going to bed. Also find out the usual time for urination during night and set an alarm just before that time to avoid bed wetting. Finally get your blood sugar level and specific gravity of urine checked.

Then on 8 day I had a very bad feeling and a little bit of fever once again. Then as per doctor advice I gave my blood sample for viral and CBC test. The report was normal but platelets were 2.25 so doctor gave me zeflox plus and some other medicine. After taking that I felt good. But there is still a little bit of headache on right side. And I am feeling this headache since the onset of fever. Now I just feel OK, I can't say that I am feeling completely normal. Can you please tell me what can be the reason behind this.
