I am 45 year male. No diabetes. Only taking bp tablets telsar a. I having very bad smell in mouth from a year. Doing two times brushing, tried also all mouth wash. Problem not solved. Please help.

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Are you suffering from dry mouth? the bpmedication could alter the salivary flow so increasing halitosis or bad smell. Other cause could be due to gastro intestina/ acidity. Avoid fried, fatty, oily, cheesy, buttery, spicy foods. Take lot of fluids, water, coconut water, limewater, fresh fruit juices, buttermilk, avoid soda and carbonated drinks. Avoid alcohol and tobacco in all forms. Brush teeth with fluoride tooth paste, use mouthwashes, use dental floss regularly. Get your teeth cleaned and polished by dentist once in 3 months.

Yellowish teeth teeth changes its colour as we all age due to dietary habits ie, carbonated drinks contain colours, red wine, few fruit juices (pomegranate, raspberry, cranberry, etc.), tea, coffee, turmeric used for foods sometimes depending on the area you reside the increased amount of iron in your water can also discolour your teeth. Lets understand this better, tooth has a top layer called" enamel" - white layer tooth has the layer beneath this called" dentine"- yellow layer enamel is white- white layer dentine is yellow- yellow layer if you see all the young kids, including you during your younger age will have white teeth. Due to the presence is more of white layer. As we advance with age the teeth change its colour to yellowish. Because the white layer becomes thin and the yellow layer shows from inside. So this is natural and nothing to worry about it. Well apart from this the foods we consume as I mentioned earlier can also stain the teeth which needs professional cleaning by the dentist. But professional cleaning will take away the stain on the surface but not whiten your teeth. Yes there are proceedures like" bleaching, done with caution can whiten your teeth. Please discuss this with your dentist. Caution: please do not use any whitening products for teeth sold online or in shops as they can be more abrasive and acidic making the teeth loose its luster and also make it more yellowish over a period of time also do not try home remedies like baking soda, lime, salt, vinegar as these are highly acidic and abrasive and will make your teeth rough as well as loose the white layer of your teeth more quickly. Please visit your dentist for professional help and discussion I hope I clarified you.

The last of my teeth has been removed last week. I am now toothless. Waiting for the heeling of the Bone on which the Dentures will be mounted. Before the making of the denture-casts for the upper jaw and the lower jaw, I understand Alioloplasty needs to be performed on the jaw-bones to smoothen any protrusions in the bone on which the dentures would be resting. What is Alioloplasty ? How long does it take ti heal after Alioloplasty ? What are the steps to complete the the dentures, after Alioloplasty ? and what are options for choosing the Denture-base and teeth-material and the pros and cons of the options ? What about using implant for the lower Denture allowing removal of the denture for cleaning. Are the dentures to be removed before going to bed ?

Alveoloplasty is the reshaping of the bone crest to attain a smooth uniform level of bone for proper retention , stability and support of dentures. It takes generally 3 weeks to 8 weeks fr complete healing. The dentures are made from acrylic, lucitone, dpi etc. Implant supported lower denture will provide better support and retention. Yes dentures should be removed before going to bed,for proper recirculation of gums(alveolar mucosa) at night.

After rinsing mouth with mouthwash, do we should rinse with fresh water? if yes after what time? if not then why it can not increase acidity of mouth which will lead to enamel calcium degradation?

The answer is no. You should avoid any type of water or food intake for approx. 30 minutes after using mouthwash. A clinical study evaluated the effect of rinsing with a mouthwash on salivary ph and plaque ph. Following pre treatment ph determinations, subjects rinsed with tap water for 30 seconds and ph was monitored periodically over 30 minutes; after a 10 minute rest period, the procedure was repeated with mouthwash substituted for tap water. Both the plaque ph and the salivary ph remained well above the critical ph of 5.7 (where demineralization occurs during the entire 30 minute period of the study). In addition, it is important to note that mouthwash (ph 4.2) is rapidly neutralized by the buffers in saliva during and after rinsing and any drop in ph will be of extremely short duration, especially when compared to that of carbonated drinks and citrus drinks and fluids which are far more difficult to neutralize. Furthermore, mouthwash is an expectorated product; therefore the contact time of the mouth rinse with the tooth surface is short.

Tooth pain could be due to various reasons, the most common being dental caries that forms a cavity within the tooth exposing the underlying nerve. Treating the tooth is the best option for which you need to consult a dentist and emergency treatment includes to run a course of antibiotics and pain killers. But not all pain killers work on tooth pain so please avoid self medication. You can consult me

What are the symptoms of ulcer? I think I am having it and if yes then I want to have it get treated asap.

BDS
Dentist, Delhi
Hi, a mouth ulcer is a painful sore inside the mouth, on the tongue, soft palate (the back portion of the roof of your mouth), or inside the cheeks. Sores in your mouth are round, white, or grey in color, with a red edge or border. The condition is usually becomes okay within 7 days. But if it persists beyond that, or if multiple ulcers keep re-appearing, medical advice must be taken. In severe mouth ulcer attacks, you may also experience fever and physical sluggishness. Taking vitamin b12 supplements along with a suitable gel for pain is the best remedy. I suggest that you consult me privately on lybrate so that I can send you the appropriate prescription. Take care.

If the mouth ulcer is causing a lot of pain, gently rub a small ice cube over the spot or rinse your mouth with ice-cold water. You could also chew on a clove bud (lavang) and direct the juice generated to the area where the ulcer is located. Clove buds are a great ingredient to cure sore throat too. To prevent the ulcerated area from getting infected, make it a point to rinse your mouth with a little salt water. Remember, this won’t make the ulcer disappear, but it can help reduce the pain. Honey is a natural humectant. It helps reduce scarring and hastens the process of new tissue growth. This, along with its anti-microbial effect ensures faster healing of the mouth ulcer. Chew a few leaves of tulsi along with some water about three to four times every day. This will help in getting rid of ulcers faster and also have a preventive action against their recurrence. Applying a little coconut oil directly onto the mouth ulcer or chewing some coconut (fresh or dry) helps reduce pain and inflammation and hence, ulcers heal faster. Mix some sugar to crushed khus-khus seeds and consume this mixture for instant relief from ulcers. You could apply a little ghee directly to the ulcerated area, or drink a glass of buttermilk two or three times every day. Mouth ulcers left untreated generally go away in a week or so; with these home remedies, you can expect faster relief. However, if you notice an ulcer in the mouth that is persistently present although it does not cause you any pain, do not neglect it or try to treat it with home remedies beyond a few days. Make it a point to see a doctor soon because often, a painless mouth ulcer is one of the earliest signs of oral cancer.

Depending upon how deep is the cavity and presence of pain or not, you may have to get the root canal treatment or get the filling done to save the teeth. Getting late in correcting the cavity of the tooth may lead to failure of saving the tooth n you may have to get it remove in future. However, to decide the proper treatment, we need some more investigations including clinical examination, consult your dentist soon.

Advanced Aesthetics, BDS

Hi, there are various reasons of bad breath, like impurities in blood, inefficient digestive system, dry mouth (lack of saliva production), gum disease, cavities, plaque and tartar formation around teeth and gums, kind of diet, improper brushing / cleaning of mouth etc. I would advise you to get a thorough physical and dental examination to rule out the cause of bad breath and to solve it permanently.
