Dealing With An Alzheimer Patient: How Can You Help?

Dealing With An Alzheimer Patient: How Can You Help?

Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes a degradation and eventually death of the brain cells. People with Alzheimer's disease suffer from a memory loss. There is also a progressive decline in the cognitive capacity of the brain.Today, Alzheimer's disease and dementia have become almost synonymous with old age. It is a heartbreaking experience to see aged people with Alzheimer's disease. They have little or no memory of the present time, of their loved people or the things around them.

The Alzheimer's disease starts off as a mild condition and then gradually progresses through stages. In this article, we will discuss the different stages associated with Alzheimer's disease.

  1. The first stage: This stage shows no significant changes in the affected person. Thus, without any diagnostic tests (such as a PET scan), it will be difficult to detect the condition in the initial stage.
  2. The second stage: This stage brings about some changes in the person. The person might misplace things or may even forget words (something that is often brushed aside as a small problem). However, this seldom interferes with their daily activities. Like the first stage, this stage, in most cases, goes unnoticed.
  3. The third stage: This is the stage that brings about visible changes in the person concerned such as

    • The person experiences difficulties in trying to organize things.
    • They forget things they have read, or heard just a few seconds back.
    • In some cases, the person may not be able to recollect a person's name they have just met.
    • Some people may end up repeating the same question over and over again.
  4. The fourth stage: This stage marks a further decline in the mental health. The person gets forgetful about himself or herself. They also start mixing up with the dates and months or makes major goof up while cooking (misses out on ingredients).
  5. The fifth stage: The mental deterioration reaches a step further. The person slowly starts forgetting about the present, such as their address, the time of the day, their profession and even phone numbers.
  6. The sixth stage: The problem is getting worse. Hallucination is slowly setting in. The person is starting to forget people and their faces, mixing one identity with another.
  7. The seventh stage: The final and unfortunately, the worst stage. The person stops talking to people, eating, or even walking. They stay confined to their world, oblivious of their immediate surrounding.

Dealing with an Alzheimer patient

  • In addition to the treatment and medication, a person with Alzheimer's disease needs the love, care, and support of their close and dear ones. Isolating them will only worsen the situation.
  • It may not be easy to deal with an Alzheimer's patient as the disease progresses, but do not be rude to them. Give them the confidence.
  • Always keep a paper containing their name, address and emergency contact number in their wallet.
  • People after the age of 50 should undergo regular health check ups.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Causes Behind Migraine

BHMS
Homeopath, Delhi

A migraine is a headache that causes a distinct pulsating pain, usually in one side of the head. It is different from normal headaches in the sense that the pain is much more intense and it may be accompanied by nausea or vomiting as well. Some patients have also complained about light sensitivity while others have also complained about pain in all areas of the head.

Some of the factors that separate a migraine from a normal headache are as follows:
While a headache may last at best a day, migraines may last longer, sometimes even up to 3 days.

  1. Feelings of nausea or actual vomiting
  2. Sensitivity to light
  3. Extreme sensitivity to changes in sound

Causes behind migraine
Some of the common and known causes, which may trigger migraines in people are:

  1. Hormonal changes in the body that may have adverse effects
  2. Dehydration is also known to trigger migraines
  3. Patients with hypoglycemia may also face migraines if the blood sugar level drops within their body
  4. 4 Change in air pressure due to change in altitude may also cause migraines to appear
  5. Lack of sleep
  6. Stress
  7. Lifestyle issues such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

Homeopathic Approach

The role of Homeopathy is to break the recurrence of the headaches and cure them completely.

For which we need to understand what allopathic pain killers do and what constitutional Homeopathic treatment do

With Constitutional Homeopathic Treatment  the frequency, intensity and duration of migraine attacks goes down and the things which generally are able to precipitate migraine , if are not able to, then only it can be claimed to be cured.

The role of pain killers and antacids are basically to tide over the acute phase or provide comfort for the time being.

That is why the coming together of Allopathy, to control acute attack and Homeopathy, to cure it completely, will prove to be a new form of synthesis which will be a  boon for the society.

Sleep Pyschiatry: Its Stages and Benefits

DPM, MBBS

Sleep Pyschiatry: Its Stages and Benefits

Sleep is the normal physiological process of our body which is as important as respiration and digestion. Sleep is vital for maintaining our physical and mental health. Normal adults require 8 hours of sleep every day, whereas it 14 to 15 hours of sleep is recommended for for infants and toddlers.

What are the different stages of Sleep

Every human has a natural circadian clock in their body, which is responsible for maintaining our sleep - wake homeostasis. The different stages of sleep include REM and NREM that is rapid eye movement sleep and non rapid eye movement sleep respectively. REM is the deep sleep stage in which it is very difficult to wake up the person as this stage includes the sensory inhibition and all voluntary muscles along with almost all interactions with the surroundings are inhibited. Therefore, a person’s physical stress and tiredness also gets relieved during this stage of sleep. NREM sleep is the stage between REM and awakening and here the person may have sensory connection with his or her surroundings, but may not respond.

Sleep and its benefits
Sleep and stress have a very strong connection with each other. The best way to relieve stress and any other mental disturbance is sleep. It is essential to have knowledge about sleep psychiatry for almost all physicians as they face many sleep deprived patients in their day to day practice.

  1. Sleep is not only responsible for relieving mental stress and depression, but has other benefits as well
  2. Sleep is also essential for the normal physiological growth in early infancy and it is vital for development of normal alertness, attention and knowledge
  3. It also relaxes our voluntary muscles and thereby, relieves us from physical stress
  4. Sleep disturbance may also aggravate diseases in our body. Sleep is also the state of recovery and healing.

Sleep psychiatry also insist on meditation and ensures that people have normal pattern of sleep, in order to maintain the mental health of the person in a normal state.

not getting menstruation could be due to breast feeding of the baby. if not you have to look for other causes. epilepsy and the medicines used for treating it are not known to cause any menstrual disturbance. if you are not breast feeding pregnancy has to be ruled out and other causes have to be looked in to.

I have the Migraine problem and gets severe headache how can I help myself with daily work.

MBBS, Diploma In Dermatology & Venerology & Leprosy (DDVL)
Dermatologist, Raigarh
Migrae migraine is more of a preventable disease than curative. You have to identify the triggers of your headache and avoid them. Avoid exposure to bright light, loud sound, sunlight. Avoid stress. Avoid chocolate and coffee. Have enough sleep. Drink 3-4 litres of water daily. I can prescribe you prophylactic medicines too if you want.

Every time you recover from the episodes of seizures (" forget what you are doing), please note what kind of activities you were doing, time, your emotional state etc. This may help to figure out some ways for better management of your problem. Nadisuddi technique from pranayama, which is a technique of yoga, properly learned and regularly practiced can help you by calming down your nervous impulses in the brain and increasing oxygen levels.
