I am 61 years old & feel back bone pain while sleeping & walking slowly. What should i do?
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You have persistent back pains which could be due to degenerative changes in you spine region. If you have localized back pain with no other symptoms like radiating leg pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc we will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like, dynamic x rays of lower back and few blood tests for evaluation. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Has anyone done mri of your knee and told you about meniscus tear? if it' s meniscus tear, no medicine can cure it. Either it will settle down on its own which is not common, or you will have to undergo arthroscopy surgery for that. Usually in this age group, there are chances of osteoarthritis of knee joints. Please visit a good knee surgeon. Dr prashant parate. Sportsorthocare shoulder and knee specialist

Low Back Pain !

MPTh/MPT, BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Mumbai
Low Back Pain !
Allow me to quote the legendary Michael Jackson here, “YOU ARE NOT ALONE”. Low backache is one of the commonest ailments globally. Although it varies in intensity, almost all individuals at some point in their life or the other undergo low backache.

A very common question we face at our centre is, “Will I be able to resume weight training ever?” Justifiable apprehension as the last thing they (and we) want is a relapse.

The following are some precautions which can allow one to exercise safely post severe backache.

1) Doctor: Consult a medical doctor / orthopaedic surgeon before commencing your exercise programme.

2) Physiotherapist: Sit down for a detailed counselling and understanding of the problem with your Gym – Physio and set goals accordingly.

3) Start slow: Gradual loading is the key to a successful exercise programme.

4) Rehabilitative exercises first: Your trainer is advised to integrate rehabilitative exercises in your programme at the offset.

5) Begin with stabilization exercises: At Inch By Inch – The Body Temple, we have a specialized programme called the “Rebalance” programme which is a strategically modified core programme that ensures low back safety.

6) Train accessory muscles unrelated to the back: Although all the muscles of the body are affected with backache, post rehabilitation weight training for accessory muscles such as biceps, triceps etc can be commenced safely while ensuring position providing sufficient back rest during all exercises.

7) Ensure good form: Good form is crucial for all individuals with or without back pain. With previous episode of low backache, this becomes even more crucial.

8) Listen to your body: Respect the signs your body delivers to you. If you wake up in the morning with increased uneasiness, local muscle fatigue or slight pain, take the day off! But do not make it a habit!

Any orthopedic doctor can check him for the pain. He should also be checked generally for BP, blood sugars and some basic tests which a general physician can do. If he requires pain medications for longer duration then you can try Homeopathy as it is safe and without any side-effects.

I suggest you follow the below for your condition: take mag phos 6x - thrice daily for next 2 weeks and update. Also do x-ray of the affected area. Heat and ice packs. Heat and/or cold therapy helps relieve most types of low back pain by reducing inflammation. Often patients use ice, but some prefer heat. Both may be used alternately.

If you’re looking for a milk alternative, you’ll find “milks” made from soybeans, brown rice, almonds, coconuts, even almond-coconut blends. Here’s a quick primer to help you choose the milk alternative that’s right for you. Almond beverage Made from finely ground almonds and water, this nutty-tasting beverage has fewer calories than other non-dairy milks (original unflavoured: 60 calories per 250-millilitre cup; unsweetened: 35 calories per cup). Almond milk contains no saturated fat or cholesterol. Coconut milk Coconut beverages are naturally higher in fat than other non-dairy milks – one cup has 4.5 to 5 grams, nearly all of it saturated. However coconut’s saturated fat may have benefits. Coconut beverages are low in protein (0.4 to 1 g per cup). They are fortified with vitamins and minerals, so you’re getting similar amounts of calcium, vitamin A, vitamin D, B12, etc. To cow’s milk. To avoid added sugars, look for unsweetened products (50 calories per cup). RICE BEVERAGES Higher in carbohydrates than other milk alternatives and cow’s milk, rice beverages are made by blending partially milled rice (usually brown) with water. During processing, the carbohydrates break down into sugars, giving rice milk its sweet taste. Soy beverages Made from whole soybeans, soy milk is considered a nutritionally adequate alternative to cow’s milk thanks to its protein content, 7 grams per cup. Another plus: There is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid, in soybeans. One cup of soy beverage delivers 300 mg of ALA (women need 1,100 mg per day; men require 1,600).

Hello doc. For past one month im suffering from back pain. Its not exactly back but its below my neck between two shoulders. I have consulted the doctor. He has given me some tablets and an ointment as well still i am facing the problem. Is it because sitting in the chair for a long time in the office without resting?

BPTh,Cert.MDT
Physiotherapist, Mumbai
It might be due to improper sitting posture and long working hours in front of computer. For the time being you can apply ice packs on dat part. Change your sitting posture. Consult a physiotherapist for the same.
