Hi, I appreciate you seeking guidance. Commonly blood tests/ tumor markers, scans and biopsies are usually employed to diagnose cancer, with biopsy being the gold standard that clinches the diagnosis. The test requirements, as mentioned above, vary from cancer to cancer. In fact, there always are symptoms but in certain early stage cancers they are quite mild and hence go unnoticed mostly. Routine health checkups may help catch these early, however. Specifically, basis the cancer society recommendations, you need to be watchful about seven cardinal warning signs (c. A. U. T. I. O. N) of cancer, as given below - c - change in bowel habits a - a sore that does not heal you - unusual bleeding or discharge t - thickening or enlargement of a lump I - indigestion or difficulty swallowing (/ dysphagia) o - obvious change in a wart or mole n - nagging cough or hoarseness hope this answers your question.

My grandmother is suffering from breast cancer. Is there is medicine without chemo?

Fellow Breast Surgery (MUHS), DNB (General Surgery), MBBS
Oncologist, Aurangabad
Hello. Whether a patient receives chemotherapy or not in case of breast cancer will totally depend on the stage of disease at presentation to the doctor. If your doctor has prescribed chemotherapy, there are very good chances that it is mandatory. There are very few but well identified instances when chemotherapy is either not required or can be avoided safely or avoided in view of risk of side effects being more possible than the benefit. Other than stage, the things that influence this decision, are age, any other diseases like diabetes or high blood pressure, etc. The biology of cancer e. G. If er, pr positive disease and whether the disease has already spread but not causing any functional harm. Such a decision has to be taken by a well learned and well experienced doctor, along with an informed decision. From patient. I can guide more only with more of patients details.

Hi doctor My breast sizes are different. My right side breast is 2 cms bigger than my left one. One of my friend said it is one of the symptoms of early cancer of breast and she only said but breast cancer may start after 40. Is it right. Tell me the details and the possible methods to make my both breasts equal.

MBBS, DNB (Surgical Oncology), MS - General Surgery
Oncologist, Delhi
Some people have different sized breasts since childhood. If it is so then it is not cancerous. A recent change in size of the breast with swelling and redness requires consultation with breast surgeon. Most of the breast cancer occur in women older than 40. About 15 - 20 % occur in women less than 40. Plastic surgery may be required to correct the asymmetry if the difference is too much.

It is better to show it to a Breast Surgeons a Surgical oncologist. They would take a detailed history and examine you and if need be, ask for an ultrasound examination. There are chances of Galactocele, which is inspissated milk after stopping Breast feeding, which if significant may need aspiration, cold compresses and rarely medication to dry up the milk like bromocriptine. Fibrocystic changes are also very common and are common cause of breast pain especially cyclical in young age. Some times some of the cysts may enlarge causing a lot of pain, which need to be aspirated. Also they need to rule out other causes of pain like ill fitting bra, trauma, abscess, costichondritis, musculoskeletal pain, pain of cardiac or lung origin amongst a few. It is very rare for cancer to cause pain especially in absence of a lump. Feel free to contact me directly if you want to discuss this further.

Brain Tumor - 10 Possible Warning Signs Your Body Is Giving You!

Brain Tumor - 10 Possible Warning Signs Your Body Is Giving You!

A Brain Tumour can be defined as an abnormal growth of the tissues in the brain, which can disrupt the proper brain functions. Generally, the cells in the human body die and are replaced by new cells, while in the case of a tumour, the old cells do not die and form an accumulation and continues to grow to form a mass as more and more cells are added to it.

Symptoms of Brain Tumour:

  1. Headache: Having headache on regular basis, without any history of having such frequent headaches in past, which becomes worse because of other pressure related activities, such as sneezing, coughing, exercising might be a possible symptom of brain tumour and issues related to such sudden and frequent headaches should be taken up with the doctor without any further delay.
  2. Seizures: Seizures (fits) are amongst the most common symptoms of brain tumour, which might be limited to a particular body part or the whole body. Seizures might even continue after the treatment of brain tumour because of the left scar tissues in the brain.
  3. Numbness in arms/legs: Numbness in any body part, especially arms and legs should also be get evaluated timely, so that, if the possible reason behind them is a brain tumour, then the same could be treated well on time.
  4. Balancing problems: Poor coordination and balancing problems also arise as the most prominent symptom for the brain tumour and hence such small changes must be evaluated and the person suffering should be taken to a doctor immediately to get treated without any delay.
  5. Memory problems: Lack of concentration, poor memory and short term memory loss are few of the possible symptoms that indicate the presence of tumour.
  6. Nausea or vomiting: Nausea or vomiting might be the symptoms of many other possible health issues, but a headache supported by nausea and/or vomiting is one of the many symptoms of a brain tumour and hence should not be ignored.
  7. Facial paralysis: The inability to keep the facial activities under control also indicates the presence of a possible brain tumour and the same should also be diagnosed as soon as one experiences it.
  8. Change in vision: A person suffering from brain tumour might also experience changes in the vision, dizziness, blurry vision, among other sight related issues.
  9. Change in speech: The inability to speak properly and changes in the speech of a person may also indicate a possible presence of a tumour.
  10. Hearing problems: Sudden occurrence of hearing problems and other hearing related disorders might have the brain tumour as a possible reason.

Diagnosing a brain tumour may include one or more of many tests, including CT scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Angiogram and biopsy. One should never ignore the symptoms of the brain tumour and should get himself/herself checked since the brain tumours might result into permanent damages to the brain; hence such issues should never be ignored.
