Radiology - How it Helps in Treating Heart Diseases?

DNB (Radio Diagnosis), MBBS
Radiologist, Hyderabad
Radiology - How it Helps in Treating Heart Diseases?

Radiology is a branch of medicine that deals with diagnosis and treatment of diseases using radiant energy. Radiology uses the imaging technology like ultrasound, x-ray radiography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), nuclear medicine. The imaging technology helps the doctor (or physician) to see within the human body and helps you get diagnosed and treated in a better way.

Radiology is also referred to as radioscopy or clinical radiology where the latter refers to the diagnosis and treatment of fatal injuries/diseases. Radiologist is a doctor who has specialized in radiology after completion of a formal medical course to become a certified doctor. Radiographer is in turn a technician who specializes in the physical operation of scans and machines like x-rays etc. You must be well aware that the Radiologist is a professional doctor but the Radiographer is just a technician.

The following are the various uses of radiology when it comes to monitor the activity of your heart:

  1. MRI: It is known as Magnetic Resonance Imaging and it makes use of the energy stored in your body’s hydrogen atoms. It uses highly advanced computer 2-D and 3-D images and no ionizing radiation is used in MRI. The activity with the heart can be precisely recorded by MRI scan.
  2. Nuclear medicine: It involves giving your body a small tracker or a radioactive material which records the radiation coming from your body using special cameras like gamma cameras or PET. It can measure the complexity of your heart disease.
  3. Fluoroscopy: It helps to give real time visualization of the body by using x-rays that allow the doctor to efficiently monitor the body part, joint and bones as well as the activity that pertains to the heart.
  4. Ultrasound: It is a test which uses high frequency sound waves to form an image within the insides of any human organ like blood vessels or the heart. Many prefer this form of imaging test which uses sound waves instead of radiation and is considered less harmful.
  5. Computed Tomography: In this type of scan, a 3-D image is formed through several 2-D images taken at a single line of axis rotation. This test is useful as it gives detailed images of specific parts of the body like blood vessel, arteries, and soft tissues surrounding your heart.

My blood pressure is always 130/90. It is normal or not. Morning time its 120/80 and after meal its 130/90. Is it normal or want to go to the doctor?

MBBS
General Physician, Kolkata
Hi Ideal blood pressure for your age is 120/80 mmHg. 120 is systolic blood pressure .which depends mainly on cardiac contraction force and heart rate. 80 is diastolic pressure. And it represents the resistance of blood vessels. Systolic pressure is also increased in anxiety and tension state. And it also normalises with some relaxation techniques. But increase in diastolic pressure is not desirable at all. So if your blood pressure is 130/90 for more than 3 occassions in a month. Then you need to modify your lifestyle. Such as doing Yoga. Pranayam.brisk walking for 30 mnts everyday. Cut off carbohydrate and lipid level in your diet. Do all this for 3 months. If tjen also BP is same .then go for antihypertensive medication.

Hi gs lybrate-user tips for weight loss eat fresh vegetables daily. Avoid having sugar completely. Eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread; avoid everything made from white flour and make whole wheat bread, chapattis and brown rice a way of life. Do not skip a meal and eat three meals a day. Drink plenty of water to eliminate the toxins from the system. Limit your fat intake to 2-3 teaspoons a day. Increase the fiber intake as it provides a sense of fullness and also prevents hunger pangs. Take antioxidants for protecting the body against the toxins released during weight loss. Exercise catalyzes your efforts to lose weight and even regular walking for thirty minutes can give you the benefits of an aerobics exercise. To improve the metabolism, try increasing the duration, frequency, intensity of your daily workout. Remember that maintaining the ideal weight is a lifetime commitment and not a short-term affair. Firmly believe that the pleasure of being trim and healthy is far better than the pleasure of eating unwisely.

Avoid sun with the help of black umbrella only. Don't come to ac room as soon as coming home. Go to a room fitted with cooler instead. Drink lots of water of ors variety, eat less salts and fried foods, take lots of water rich fruits and vegetables like melons and cucumber and wear cottons only. Maintain basic hygiene by taking bath. If exposed to sun for long hours rest and ors types of water is the only therapy. No medicines, prevention is the mantra.

high cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take green veg., whole grain.garlic,. Take anti cholesterol medicines .

Hello Mr. Iyer, hypertension (high blood pressure) can be controlled by- 1. Balanced diet low in sodium- reduce intake of salt, restrict table salt on salads, drinks, restrict ppc- papad, pickle, chutnies, ketchups. Instead use more tomatoes, lemon, tamarind for the taste factor in food. Increase intake of potassium rich fruits like coconut water to bring down bp immediately. Sweetlime, orange, banana are other choices. 2. Exercise- an hour of cardio activity like walking, jogging, swimming, outdoor games like badminton, tennis which you are engaged in will help. However try to add variations in your activity. 3. Rest- a good night's for 7-8 hrs goes a long wat in controlling bp. 4. De-stress- reduction of stress on the mind and body by doing meditation or yoga atleast 3 times/week will help. All the best.
