Dialysis May Save Your Life!

Dialysis May Save Your Life!

Located right under the rib cage, kidneys are a very important organ of the body. They are not only responsible for purifying your blood from wastes and excess fluid but are also involved in maintaining electrolyte balance, regulating blood pressure and producing red blood cell in the body.

In many cases, due to some medical condition, one or both kidneys may stop functioning properly. If not treated in time, it may lead to complete kidney failure and if the kidneys fail completely, dialysis or transplant may be the only treatment options available.

Dialysis is a treatment in which the blood is filtered and purified artificially using machines. This process is beneficial for those whose kidneys are not able to do their job properly.

Need for dialysis

A functioning kidney prevents the accumulation of excess water, impurities, and wastes inside the body. They also work to maintain the blood pressure level and control the presence of certain chemicals like sodium and potassium.

When the kidneys fail to perform these critical functions, maybe because of some disease or injury, dialysis helps to keep up the healthy functioning of the body as much as possible. As without dialysis all the wastes and fluids will accumulate and poison the body, resulting even in death. However, it must be kept in mind that dialysis is not a cure for kidney diseases; it is just an alternative to their functions.

Types of dialysis
Dialysis is an artificial process of purifying your blood using machines. There are two types of dialysis:

Hemodialysis
This is one of the most common types of dialysis, where an artificial kidney, known as a hemodialyzer, is used to remove waste and chemicals from the blood. The doctor surgically creates a vascular access into the blood vessels allowing the artificial kidney to perform.

Peritoneal Dialysis
This is a surgical procedure, where a catheter is implanted in the belly area. The treatment involves a special fluid called dialysate which is flowed into the abdomen to clean the blood. Once the blood is cleaned, the fluid is drained from the abdomen. The benefit of this treatment is that you can perform it in your home, without going to a hospital.

Risks in Dialysis
Even though either of these two treatment procedures is life-saving and there is hardly any alternative, these two can also come with risks. The risks include peritonitis, abdominal muscle weakening, high blood sugar level, weight gain, low blood pressure anemia, muscle cramping, insomnia, itching, depression, increased potassium level and pericarditis. If you experience any of these symptoms of the risks involved, then immediately consult your doctor and explain in details.

A patient who is going through dialysis for a long time also has a chance of succumbing to the medical condition called amyloidosis. When the amyloid proteins, which are produced in bone marrow, collects in kidneys, hearts, liver and other organs, amyloidosis occurs. This results in joint pain, stiffness and even swelling.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

MD PULMONARY, DTCD

TB medicine should not cause unconsciousness. Get blood sugar tested at time of loss of consciousness as hypoglycaemia can cause such symtoms. Also mention which TB drugs he is taking. Send all reports via Lybrate.

Hi lybrate-user, you seem to be suffering from some acute allergic reactions. Here Are Some Natural Ways To Get Quick Relief From Itchy Skin Allergies: 1. Cold Bath Or Cold Compress - Unless your skin allergy is triggered by cold (surprising, but unfortunately, sometimes true!), a cold shower could be just what you need. During an allergic reaction, a chemical called histamine is released from our immune cells. It seeps out of the blood vessels and enters the tissue beneath the skin. This then directs an allergic reaction. A cold shower shrinks your blood vessels and doesn’t allow the histamine to come out of the blood vessels. This reduces the severity of the allergic reaction. A cold shower also helps reduce skin irritation. 2. Olive Oil: Extra virgin olive oil is truly a blessing from the Gods! Not only is it great as salad dressing, it also doubles up as a great moisturizer. It is rich in vitamin E that is vital for good skin health. It’s also loaded with powerful antioxidants. These help to heal and repair the skin after it has suffered allergic damage. It also reduces itching. Apply generous amounts of olive oil over the affected part. You can also use it over the whole body after the cold shower. This could help you far better than chemical-laden moisturizers. 3. Baking Soda: The humble kitchen soda bi-carb is an excellent home medicine for skin allergy. Baking soda helps the skin rash dry out. It also relieves itching and prevents further inflammation of skin. Make a paste by mixing half a teaspoon of baking soda in some water. Apply on the affected area and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing it off. Do not leave it on for longer as baking soda itself could cause more irritation. 4. Medicinal Plants And Herbs (Aloe Vera, Neem, Basil, Calendula, Coriander) - Many plants are known for their their antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-irritant properties, making them excellent choices to deal with allergies. You can buy good quality calendula oil and apply it for a few hours on the affected area. The fleshy, gel-like portion from a fresh aloe vera leaf could also be used as a soothing salve. To use neem, basil and coriander leaves, you can make a paste by grinding these together and then applying it on the affected part. Leave the paste on for an hour or so and then rinse it with plain water. Do not use soap or cleansers. 5. Apple Cider Vinegar - ACV has many health benefits, one of them being its ability to reduce the severity of acid reflux. It also has antiseptic and anti-irritant properties. If you apply it over the skin, it can soothe, moisturize and reduce itching. Put a few drops of ACV (use the raw, organic, unfiltered variety) on a cotton ball and dab it all over the affected area. You can rinse the skin after a few minutes. Do this at least twice a day for good results. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
