What are the common causes of Back Pain?

What are the common causes of back pain?

Back pain can be caused by one or combination of several factors.
Some of these are:

Muscle or ligament sprain
This can occur due to poor posture, repeated heavy lifting, sudden awkward movement.

Bulging or herniated disc (slipped disc)
Discs are like cushions between our spinal verbrae which absorb shock. Due to repeated stress or sudden awkward force the disc material can bulge or protrude and press on nerve. Bulging discs may not painful and pain is mostly when it presses or irritates a nerve coming out of the spine.
Problems of the disc are called spondylosis.
Cervical spondylosis (neck area)
Thoracic spondylosis (upper and mid back area)
Lumbar spondylosis (low back area)

Osteoarthritis (degeneration of joints in the spine) can occur due to excessive stress on spine and also as we age.

This causes thinning and weakening of the bones in the spine.
The bone density and calcium is low and the risk of fractures is higher in people having osteoporosis.

Deformities of the spine
Abnormal curvature of the spine from birth or developed later in life can cause back pain.
Scoliosis, kyphosis etc.

It is very important to find the cause of the pain as treatment approaches are different depending on the problem. Knowing the root cause helps to create awareness that can prevent it from recurring.

You can start with walk for atleast half an hr morning and evening. Instead of water drink a decoction of fennel, cumin, carom. Mix all 3 in water and put to boil on low flame for 20-25 min. Sieve and drink. After 6 months of delivery you can start exercise. We provide 1 week diet that will help to reduce weight approx. 3-5 kg in a week. You can incorporate that in daily routine for maintaining weight. You can follow some tips in daily routine. 1. After every meal, drink 1 cup boiling water with spoon sip by sip. After half an hour you have taken meal do this daily. 2. Try to avoid eating heavy food after 7 pm. As it takes time to digest heavy food. 3. Drink 1 glass water half an hour before meal. 4. Drink 2 glasses of lukewarm warm daily in morning. 5. Try to do some exercise. Yoga and meditation are very good in losing weight and maintaining it also. Yoga asanas you can do - manduk asana - sarwang asana - setubal asana - pawan mukht asana -nauka asana pranayama -anulom vilom -deep breathing - kapal bhati other exercises -crunches -cycling -leg rotation

Dear, According to Ayurveda joint pain is known as Sandhigata vata. With increase in age vata dosha is predominant in human body that is why with aging disease caused by vata dosha increases in body. Joint pain is a common symptom with many possible causes. Joint Pain and Arthritis are the one of the most devastating conditions faced by individuals, particularly elderly women today. When there is pure Vata dosha involvement (a pain without swelling or discoloration) then the massage with medicated ayurvedic oil is quite useful & supplement is helpful in balancing bodily humors ?vata, which is responsible dosha for Sandhigata vata . My age is 19 and I have pain in my knees since 2 months so what should I do for it?

Physiotherapist, Surat
Hi lybrate-user, at the age of 19 you are suffering from knee pain which means you have been injured somewhere for which you are not aware. In such case I would recommend you to go for ice packs with quadriceps exercises. Start with isometrics and then progress to strengthening. If pain increases during the treatment (exercise) then please consult any near by doctor and go for proper investigation.

Hello lybrate user, - what you are doing is only temporary relief - look at the cause what is actually giving you that pain - maintain always errect posture while traveling/sitting etc - avoid heavy lifting - do some physical exercise to make your muscles and joints flexible - apply mahanarayana taila before bath to come out of this pain for now. Thank you.

I have back pain from last 7 days. What can I do? Is it text neck? I have pain in the back as well.

Homeopath, Faridabad
Hello. Maintain a right standing and sitting posture, keep your back always straight, avoid carrying weight on back. Hold or carry weight divided equally in both the hands or shoulders (to avoid over straining on one particular hand or shoulder). Lie down on bed on your back without pillow. Exercise: Practice Shavasana or Corpse Pose as it looks like a dead body. If practiced correctly and with full efforts, can relax every body part, relaxing not only the body but also the mind: Spread the legs one to two feet apart, the toes are turned outwards, the heels facing each other, a comfortable distance apart. Bring the arms a little away from the body, palms turned upward. Relax the neck and allow it to turn to the side if it is more comfortable. Close the eyes and focus the attention on the body, breathing normally. Medication: Take homoeopathic medicines - Arnica 200 and Rhus Tox. 200 - take both of them thrice daily for 1 week. Also, apply Schwabe's Topi-Arnica and Topi MP Gel on the affected area in circular motions gently thrice a day. Get back to me thereafter.
