Indigestion - Habits That Can Lead To It!

Indigestion refers to the discomfort in your upper belly or abdomen after you have eaten your food. Indigestion in many cases has an underlying problem like gastroesophageal reflux disease, ulcers or disorders of your gallbladder. Indigestion is also known as dyspepsia in medical terms.

The causes of indigestion due to the presence of any diseases or underlying medical conditions consist of the following:

  1. Problems like ulcers
  2. In rare cases, it could be initial symptoms of stomach cancer
  3. Chronic pancreatitis
  4. Thyroid disease
  5. Infections in your stomach and irritable bowel syndrome
  6. Pregnancy could also result in indigestion

Some of the lifestyle habits that can cause indigestion are mentioned below:

  1. Excessive consumption of alcohol
  2. Smoking cigarettes
  3. Stress and fatigue in daily life
  4. Consumption of foods with high-fat content
  5. Regular and excessive intake of fried and oily foods

Medications can also cause indigestion and some of those could be:

  1. Steroid medications
  2. Thyroid medicines
  3. Certain of antibiotics in heavy doses
  4. Oral contraceptives and estrogen replacement medications
  5. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen
  6. Painkillers

Sometimes indigestion may not be related to the factors mentioned above and yet persist within your body. This type of indigestion is known as functional or non-ulcer dyspepsia.

You should contact a medical professional immediately if the symptoms of indigestion include some of the following:

  1. Back pain
  2. Jaw pain
  3. Heavy sweating and anxiety
  4. Indigestion that lasts longer than one day
  5. Severe and sudden pain in the abdomen
  6. Problems when you try to swallow food
  7. Vomiting or presence of blood in your stool
  8. Sudden loss in your weight
  9. Skin and eyes turning yellow in color which is a tell-tale sign of jaundice

In case your indigestion persists for too long and doesn’t respond to conventional treatment, your doctor might prescribe some of the following tests.

  1. Ultrasound tests of your abdomen
  2. Blood tests
  3. Upper endoscopy
  4. Physical examination of your digestive tract and the stomach area
  5. Questions by the doctor about what symptoms you may be facing and how they are manifesting within your body

From the hormonal standpoint, multiple miscarriage can occur due to suboptimal thyroids, progesterone and metabolic disturbances. Considering your fluctuating TSH, I would like to rule out Autoimmune Thyroiditis, another possible cause of miscarriage. I would consider switching you from your present tbyroid meds to a combination of T3 and T4 and investigate for other hormone and metabolic deficiencies.

Stay Healthy

Eating anything in excess can lead to weight gain, but potatoes in moderation are a great way to stay on track for your weight loss goals. Potatoes are considered starches, which fills up the stomach in the same way as bread or other high-fiber foods, making you feel full and satisfied. The specific type of carbohydrates found in potatoes are also more resistant to digestion, and are not “simple” sugars, so these are instead converted directly to energy, and can boost the metabolism, helping to burn even more calories and keep you in better shape.

Your hands are breeding grounds for bacteria because we use them to touch so many things. Touching your face is a big no-no because it cuts down on bacteria transmission.

Coffee - Is It Bad For Your Digestive Health?

Coffee - Is It Bad For Your Digestive Health?

Almost everyone knows about the tremendous benefits that coffee has to offer. Be it energizing one's self or protecting the brain from various degenerative diseases, a cup of coffee can be a solution for all. But did you know that the caffeine present in coffee can do more damage to your health than good? Yes, coffee can be beneficial only when consumed in small amounts. Overdrinking it or developing an addiction to coffee can take a toll on your gut.

Keep on reading to find out how.

  1. Coffee Increases Stomach AcidityThose who drink coffee regularly in the morning, on an empty stomach must know that more than it can energize them for the day ahead, regular cups of morning coffee actually slowly raise serious gut problems, stomach acidity being one of them. Along with various plant-based compounds present in coffee, caffeine stimulates the cells of the stomach to secrete more hydrochloric acid, which makes the stomach an ideal dwelling place for the pylori bacteria, responsible for an ulcer.
  2. Coffee May Cause Acid RefluxThe esophageal sphincter muscles between the food pipe and the stomach are responsible for allowing food into the stomach and ensuring that it stays there. However, drinking too much coffee causes the esophageal sphincter muscles to relax which leads to stomach acid building up in the food pipe. This causes severe irritation, pain or a burning sensation in the chest, known as acid reflux. If acid reflux occurs frequently, it may lead to further complications, such as ulcers, sores, etc.
  3. Makes the Food Rot in the Gut: Various research studies have shown that coffee speeds up the release of contents from the stomach even before they are digested completely. Food that is not properly digested usually ends up sitting in the gut and rotting there. This rotting food, creates a toxic environment inside the intestines which becomes ideal for the spread of bad bacteria, which causes inflammation, and damages the walls of the intestine.
  4. Disrupts the Absorption of Minerals: Coffee can also irritate your prostate gland and bladder, it sometimes even disrupts the absorption of minerals like magnesium, which affects the digestive system of the body, slowing it down. Magnesium being the most crucial mineral for regulating healthy and normal bowel movement, one can very well imagine how badly the digestion process will be affected if the absorption of magnesium gets hampered. Plus, by moving the bowels even before water and other essential nutrients are absorbed, coffee may cause malnourishment and dehydration.

So next time you boast about your habit of drinking coffee whenever possible, think twice. No matter how healthy something is, having too much of it can cause damage to health and so does excessive consumption of coffee.
