Salivary Gland Disorder - Common Causes Behind it

Salivary Gland Disorder - Common Causes Behind it

Remember the sensation similar to that of a warm liquid flooding your tongue when you smell a deliciously baked chocolate cake? Or a freshly baked brown bread early in the morning? That is your saliva. The salivary glands present in the inner linings of the lips, cheeks and the mouth produce saliva. Saliva protects one from tooth decay, keeps the mouth moist and helps in the digestive process. Any disease that affects the saliva gland comes under the domain of ‘salivary gland disorders’.

Causes

There are three salivary glands in humans known as the Submandibular, Parotid and the Sublingual gland. The most common disorder that affects salivary glands is that of ‘blocked salivary glands’. Sialothiasis is a disorder wherein, calcium stones are formed in the salivary glands, which obstruct these glands. Obstruction of the salivary glands leads to an infection called sialadenitis, caused by strep or staph bacteria.

Sjogren’s syndrome is another condition which affects the salivary glands. In this condition, the antibodies in the body target the cells that produce saliva. This occurs mostly in women who suffer from autoimmune disorders. Viral infections are also common; flu virus and mumps are a few examples.

Symptoms

The symptoms of salivary gland disorders are problem specific; for Sialolithiasis, you will feel a painful lump below the tongue, which tends to aggravate when you eat. In case of Sialadenitis, there will be an odorous pus-filled discharge along with a lump beneath the chin. For viral infections, the symptoms will include muscle pain, swelling and fever. Symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome are dry eyes and mouth, joint pain, fatigue and tooth decay.

Treatment

Like the symptoms, the treatments for salivary gland disorders are also problem specific. For salivary gland tumors, surgery is required. If it is a malignant tumor, then radiation therapy will be prescribed which may cause dry mouth syndrome (Xerostomia). For bacterial and viral infections, anti-bacterial and anti-viral medications are required for treatment, respectively. It is also important that you take good care of your oral health for an even more effective treatment. Brushing and flossing your teeth on a regular basis will help keep salivary gland disorders at bay. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Mouth ulcer has several cause like upset stomach, indigestion, constipation, vit b deficiency. For that you should take light diet, avoid spicy food, oily food to get rid of stomach problem, drink lots of water, eat papaya, take vit b complex capsule, mix honey and turmaric and apply it on affect area, drink coconut water, and chew some tulsi leaves. •Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid eating strongly flavoured or spicy food. •Cut down on sugary food and drink, as it can increase the amount of bacteria in your mouth. •Reduce your alcohol consumption. •Stop smoking. •Cut down on coffee. •Drink plenty of water to help prevent your mouth becoming dry. •Chew sugar-free gum after eating, to stimulate the flow of saliva. This will help clean away any remaining food particles. •Don't use toothpaste to clean your dentures, as it can scratch the surface and cause stains. •Clean your dentures thoroughly using soap and lukewarm water, denture cream or a denture-cleaning tablet. •Use a separate toothbrush to clean your dentures. •Make sure you visit your dentist for regular check-ups. Having regular dental check-ups will ensure that any plaque is removed from your teeth, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. •Your dentist can recommend the best way to clean your teeth and gums, and point out areas you might be missing. They can also identify any signs of gum disease and ensure early treatment. •Gastritis, lung & sinus infection may also be the cause of bad smell in the mouth. 90% of bad breath is due to a dirty tongue. •If your bad breath is caused by a gastrointestinal problem, such as an H. Pylori infection or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), you may be referred to a gastroenterologist. •Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. •You may need deep cleaning & fill tooth cavities with artificial enamel filling. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash until then. Advance procedures can be done with laser too.

Sir, I take root canal treatment for my 2 teeth. But within one month some part of cement is disappeared and I am getting pain from that 2 teeth. Give me some tips to me to fix the problem.

BDS
Dentist, Hyderabad
After rct a temporary cement is placed that should be replaced after a week and go for crown. In your condition the cement is gone so food may be getting accumulated that's the pain so no big deal. Get a permanent filling followed by crown.

Hi, I am 28 yrs old, female and I have a pain in my left gum (mouth) for last 1 months. What should I do.
Hello. Hi lybrate-user, pain may be due different reasons like due to deposits that spread infection to the gums, or due to pus formation at that site or due food accumulation. You actually need to consult a doctor nearby and get your oral prophylaxis done and follow the treatment accordingly. Be happy:)

Take your antibiotics as prescribed by your dentist.Avoid crunchy, hard or tough foods on a recently treated root canal tooth for several days afterward.Having a crown made for a root canal treated tooth helps to maintain it, keep it intact, functional, and less likely to develop pain from fracturing. If the pain after root canal treatment persists, make sure to contact your dental office. They will get you in to check that the tooth is healing as it should.

Slight shaping of the tooth structure to create symmetry is possible. But if removed in excess would result in loss of enamel and result in sensitivity.

A crown (cap) getting loose is usually not a major issue, as it can be readily recemented. However, if it keeps getting loose repeatedly, there might be something wrong with the tooth preparation or the crown design, or both. You do not need a repeat RCT for a loosened cap, unless the tooth is otherwise symptomatic. Please visit your dentist so the situation maybe remedied. Often, all you might need is a simple recementation of the cap, which is a simple enough thing to do. Do carry your cap with you for your dental appointment.
