Most of software professionals don't know how to work on computer for long time without giving trouble to eyes. While working on computer number of blinking drastically goes down from around 24 per minute to around 8 per minute leading to severe dryness causing burning, eyestrain, blurring of vision & headache. One should try to have normal blinking while working on computer, should look away from screen after every 10 minute , should take rest for 10 minute after every 2 hours& should wear antiglare glass. Software professionals should use lubricating eye drops 4-5 times daily (Systane ultra)&genteal gel once at bed time.

My wife is 42 years old and she has been suffering from Migraine for the past 10 years. She takes medicines regularly but even slight change in daily routine triggers the pain and she has to take pain killer frequently. Please suggest remedies for the same.

BHMS, DEMS
Homeopath, Pune
Most useful home remedies for reducing headaches and migraine pain involves making changes to your diet. Certain foods have been shown to affect the frequency and severity of headaches and migraine pain, including dairy; chocolate; peanut butter; certain fruits, such as avocado, banana, and citrus; onions; meats with nitrates, foods containing monosodium glutamate (msg); foods containing tyramine, an amino acid found in red wine; and foods that are fermented or pickled. Keep track of these trigger foods and your reaction to them with a food diary.

I got 3 children. The eldest daughter is suffered with fits during her childhood and become 50% mentally retarded. Other two are above normal in intelligence. Doctors says that she is behind 10 years of actual age. My question is how her condition will be cured?

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Well sir usually mental retardation (intellectual disability) is an arrested development of human brain which is more of a permanent condition. Any child with early neonatal seizures with early childhood problem has more risk. But on the positive side usually children in the borderline or mild category can have good improvement with occupational therapy and domain specific training. My advice to you is kindly try to train her as any other kid daily and she should do well. Kindly consult an occupational therapist with expertise in this field for good results. Also be in touch with your psychiatrist for follow up. All the best.

Respected sir, my father is 59 years old suffering from spinocerebellar ataxia. Progressive in nature. 1. Slurring of speech since 2007 2. Gait abnormality since 2009 3. Writing abnormality since 2009 he is not having any comorbidities neither any family history. Please help me if you have any suggestion for him.

DM - Neurology
Neurologist,
Progressive sca at 59 years age is unusual and should trigger a search for various conditions: cerebrovascular disease, demyelinating disease, infectious diseases, vitamin deficiency, toxic exposure, sarcoidosis, autoimmune diseases (eg, sle, sjogren syndrome), and alcohol-induced cerebellar degeneration. Other diseases that can mimic this condition include late-onset spinocerebellar ataxia with or without a family history, olivopontocerebellar degeneration, and other degenerative diseases of the brain. The most problematic is paraneoplastic cerebellar degernation, even though it is slightly more common among women; in men, it may signal an occult small cell ca of the lung, or hodkgin lymphoma. Apart from the tests for the other conditions mentioned, a test for anti-yo antibody and a search for occult malignancy should be done. Treatment is by physiotherapy/gait therapy, and treatment for the underlying condition if possible.

I am suffering from migraine from 25 years. Every attack I take pain killers and vasograin also. Pl.suggest a medicine.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
Migraine is a kind of relapsing headache. Its symptoms include - episodic unilateral or bilateral, severe and pulsating headaches, associated at times with nausea and vomiting, relieved momentarily on rest or taking medications and aggravated by precipitating factors like sleep deprivation, loud noises, continued sun exposure, allergy to some agents etc. The treatment of migraine is mainly done for relief from acute headache attacks and later treatments to prevent future relapses. Also treatment of factors which tend to cause relapses is also important. Consult a headache specialist for treatmnet. You may contact me online for an further queries and management.

Narcolepsy is a long term neurological disorder that involves a decreased ability to regulate sleep-wake cycles.[1] Symptoms include periods of excessive daytime sleepiness that usually lasts from seconds to minutes and may occur at any time. About 70% also have periods of sudden loss of muscle strength, known as cataplexy. These spells can be brought on by strong emotions. Less commonly there may be vivid dream like images or the inability to move for a period of time during falling asleep or upon waking-up. People with narcolepsy sleep about the same amount of hours per day as people without but the quality of sleep tends to be worse.[1] The cause of narcolepsy is unknown.[2] In up to 10% of cases there is a family history of the disorder. Often those affected have low levels of the neurotransmitter hypocretin which may be due to an autoimmune disorder. Trauma, certain infections, toxins, or psychological stress may also play a role. Diagnosis is typically based on the symptoms and sleep studies, after ruling out other potential causes. Excessive daytime sleepiness can also be caused by other sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, major depressive disorder, anemia, heart failure, drinking alcohol, and not getting enough sleep. My suggestion is to see a psychiatrists.

Head ache associated with nausea and vomiting. 3. Sensitivity to loud noise or bright light. 4. Along with this, many people have some triggers for migraine head ache like cheeze, yoghurt, colas, caffeine, stress. Etc. So now, you can very well decide whether you have migraine or not.
