Sleep Pyschiatry: Its Stages and Benefits

DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Sleep Pyschiatry: Its Stages and Benefits

Sleep is the normal physiological process of our body which is as important as respiration and digestion. Sleep is vital for maintaining our physical and mental health. Normal adults require 8 hours of sleep every day, whereas it 14 to 15 hours of sleep is recommended for for infants and toddlers.

What are the different stages of Sleep

Every human has a natural circadian clock in their body, which is responsible for maintaining our sleep - wake homeostasis. The different stages of sleep include REM and NREM that is rapid eye movement sleep and non rapid eye movement sleep respectively. REM is the deep sleep stage in which it is very difficult to wake up the person as this stage includes the sensory inhibition and all voluntary muscles along with almost all interactions with the surroundings are inhibited. Therefore, a person’s physical stress and tiredness also gets relieved during this stage of sleep. NREM sleep is the stage between REM and awakening and here the person may have sensory connection with his or her surroundings, but may not respond.

Sleep and its benefits
Sleep and stress have a very strong connection with each other. The best way to relieve stress and any other mental disturbance is sleep. It is essential to have knowledge about sleep psychiatry for almost all physicians as they face many sleep deprived patients in their day to day practice.

  1. Sleep is not only responsible for relieving mental stress and depression, but has other benefits as well
  2. Sleep is also essential for the normal physiological growth in early infancy and it is vital for development of normal alertness, attention and knowledge
  3. It also relaxes our voluntary muscles and thereby, relieves us from physical stress
  4. Sleep disturbance may also aggravate diseases in our body. Sleep is also the state of recovery and healing.

Sleep psychiatry also insist on meditation and ensures that people have normal pattern of sleep, in order to maintain the mental health of the person in a normal state.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH)

I don't know your past history of seizures but if you have given it regularly for 4 years and no seizure, I think you can slowly reduce the dose and stop it with constant watch for some time.

Alzheimer's disease in hindi -

MBBS, M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition

Alzheimer's disease in hindi -

Your brother must have suffered from fracture of skull bones with brain injury/ haematoma or haemorrhage. You haven't mentioned whether he is in ICU/ ventilator or on support systems. Mostly such situations are life threatening. You can't do much in such situation except let doctors do their best. Make sure he is under care of Neurosurgeons and Intensivist (doctors specialised in ICU care). CT scan reports are important for diagnosis and treatment. All the best. Hope he recovers well.

There are many possibilities to this, it is not necessary that there cannot be possibilities of lesions or other abnormalities even if the mri is clear. At the onset it appears to be that you are extremely stressed and are undergoing a anxiety disorder. Yet you also need to rule out seizure disorders since drowsiness accompanied with headache is present.

I a suffering from facial paralysis from last 1 month consult with many doctors but not recover till now.

MSc in Orhopedic Physiotherapy (UK), BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Bangalore
Often, no treatment is needed for facial palsy. Symptoms often begin to improve right away. However, it may take weeks or even months for the muscles to get stronger, and this may be frustrating. Facial nerve palsy causes temporary partial paralysis of facial muscles. Without treatment, recovery occurs for nearly all patients within one year and many patients recover within one month. Many patients chose to use physiotherapy treatment to help progress their recovery. If you want to use physiotherapy, you can choose to try bell's palsy facial exercises electrical stimulation manual massage kabat rehabilitation most cases go away completely within a few weeks to months. If you did not lose all of your nerve function and symptoms began to improve within 3 weeks, you're more likely to regain all or most of the strength in your facial muscles. Please consult a physiotherapist nearby for rehab. Best wishes.

Please help me out. I had seizure 3.8 years ago and after it my treatment get started as CTSCAN was normal but there were focal bilateral temporal spikes noticed in EEG. I have completed the treatment of three years without any further seizure and till 3 years I was on same dosage of medication, on completion of treatment EEG was again performed and as per doctor there was bit improvement but still like Right focal temporal spikes noticed, Since I was seizure free so doctor asked to stop medication by decreasing the dosage gradually. In mid March I have stopped medication and I am seizure free till date. Since there is no guarantee in medical science but still I have few questions coz I am bit depressed and worried. 1.This seizure indicates I am suffering from epilepsy or it is possible that a person had one seizure only in life time and get cured after treatment? 2. precautions I have to take so seizure will not trigger again or any home remedies/supplements which I take to cure this?

Epilepsy is an abnormal medical condition due to abnormal electrical discharge from the brain, which could be due to genetic defects, brain injury, brain infection, brain tumor etc. Recent study shows, patients with awareness, knowledge and attitude towards the disease had better health related quality of life. Do’s Do take your medicines at the prescribed times. Do make it known to your family members, friends and people who work with you that you are seizure-prone. Tell them what should be done in case you get an attack in their presence. This is nothing to be ashamed of as epilepsy is a medical condition just like high blood pressure. If your child has epilepsy, do inform the teacher and the school authorities about it. Do tell your child's teacher what to do if your child has a seizure. Do keep an accurate record of your seizures and their frequency. Preferably, maintain a seizure diary. Do ask your doctor about medicines for other conditions before taking them. Do follow a balanced diet. Do exercise regularly but avoid over-exertion. Do have good lighting in the room where you watch TV. TV picture flashes can trigger seizures. Good lighting can prevent such attacks. Do tell someone if you are going for a swim; swim only if your seizures are under control. Moreover, whenever possible, go swimming with a friend. Do talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of using contraceptive pills (medicines used by women to avoid unwanted pregnancy) along with your epilepsy medicines. Do wear protective headgear when cycling. Do tell your doctor about any ill effects that you experience. Do get a good night's sleep daily. Do make sure you have enough medicine so that you don't run short, even when you are travelling. Do check-in with your doctor regularly. Don’ts Don't stop your treatment unless your doctor tells you to. Don't consume caffeine or alcohol excessively. Don't take other medicines without checking with your doctor. Don't lock the bathroom/toilet door, if possible. Don't smoke. Don't give others your medicines and don't take anyone else's medicines.
