Quadriceps strengthening exercises- Quad Clenches: Lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, Hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short Arcs: Lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight Leg Raise: Lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise. Hamstring stretching Towel Hamstring Stretch Lie on the back, supporting the thigh with the hand or with a towel wrapped around it.. Slowly straighten the knee until a stretch is felt in the back of the thigh, trying to get the bottom of the foot to face the ceiling, one leg at a time. Hold the position initially for 10 seconds, and gradually work up to 20 to 30 seconds. Seated Hamstring Stretch While sitting at the edge of a chair, straighten one leg in front of the body with the heel on the floor. Then, sit up straight and try pushing the navel towards the thigh without leaning the trunk of the body forwards. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds Repeat 3 times for each leg.

Hi, I am a 26 year old girl, working in I.T sector. I have been having very severe upper back pain and muscle pains in my shoulder area since many years (almost 10 years), almost every single day. I have taken many medications and consulted many doctors, but never got any proper cure. Recently I discovered from browsing lots of things on the internet, that my pain pattern was similar to trigger point pains. Also, one doctor had told me seeing my x-ray, that my spinal cord has an inverse curve or a deteriorated curve, in my neck region, and also chest area. I do not know the reason for this, as I cant recall of any serious injury which might have caused this. From my internet analysis, I have found that my pain areas are around the trapeziud muscles, rhomboid muscles and the scapula area. But all pain is on the shoulder and below. Not in the neck or anywhere else. I also do not know if I should consult a neurologist, or ortho or physiotherapist to get a proper cure. Can you please suggest what needs to be done?

Kindly show me a photograph of the affected part. Rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick matress are harmful Do hot fomantation. Paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. You will need other supportive medicines also. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, contact me again. Do not ignore. It could be beginning of a serious problem.

I am 67 years old .I am suffering with backache right side & arm upto elbow. It pains when on bed & while changing side or getting up. Almost no pain while walking, for four months.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You have mentioned pain in neck region as your main problem. It is at your age spine starts showing signs of degeneration with some impingement of nerves. If there is only localized pain in neck region with no other associated symptoms like radiating pain, numbness, paresthesias etc, and no systemic symptoms like fever, loss of appetite, loss of weight etc, my advice to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - to maintain proper posture of your neck while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or even tab paracetamol which suits you - intensive physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied 3-4 times in a day - analgesic spray for local application like dynapar qps spray can be used and is easily available. If there is no improvement in 2-3 weeks with this conservative management, we will need to evaluate her further in form of dynamic x rays to look for any instability as a cause for pain and some blood investigations to rule out any deficiencies etc. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Hello, kindly follow advises given below 1. Avoid using computers continuously, take rest for 5 min after working for half an hour 2. In pain free interval do neck exercise (kindly learn exercise by registered trainer) 3. You can use thin pillow while sleeping so that normal posture of neck can be maintained 4. Maintain proper posture of body while watching tv/ studying kindly go for cervical x ray ap and lateral and review with reports consult physician for further management.

It may have to be further investigated. You will need other supportive medicines also. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. My father has undergone c2-c7 decompressive laminectomy surgery on 2010, now again he is suffering with same problem of nerves tigthness & unable to walk. Now doctors again recomded for surgery, weahther it is adviceable for surgery any risk is invovled in surgery.

My forehead pains above my eyes. Also the back of head above neck pains a lot daily. The muscles have became stiff and hard, has an pin point shooting pain. Is it due to stress or cervical spondylosis please suggest medication.

Can be solved through acupressure/ acupuncture easily. Try this for 3 days. Massage with your thumbs from the mid points of the shoulder blades on both sides towards the lower back of your head up to lower level of the ears. Use oil or water for massage. Rotate your head clockwise and anticlockwise, forward and down, left and right a few times. Do for 5 to 10 times morning and evening. For headache press 10 times your thumb sideways and front and back. Inhale while pressing and exhale while releasing this can be done on both thumbs consult me after 5 days for further treatment.

I am 58 yr. S old. 3-4years back I mate with accident with no major injury. I had frozen shoulder after that which was taken care by physiotherapy. Now november 2014 I observed that once again I am having left frozen shoulder. Since then I have taken swd and physiotherapy but this time recovery is not even 30%. Doctor has asked me blood test for homocystine and vitamin d. What causes frozen shoulder and does it have any relation to thyroidism? please enlighten me for right treatment.

Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis is a condition in which shoulder movements get progressively decreased, it is commonly associated with diabetes although association with other conditions is also known. Your symptoms are most likely due to plantar fascitis which is inflammation of plantar fascia at sole of feet. The treatment mostly is conservative and lifestyle modifications to achieve maximum functionality with minimum pain. Follow these lifestyle changes religiously to get benefit. 1. Reduce body weight as obesity will aggravate the stress on heel. 2. Avoid exercises like running / walking on hard surfaces. Stop such activities when you start developing pain. 3. Roll your feet on bottle of cold water for 20 mins 4 times a day or can apply ice pack. 4. Use shoes with silicone sole inserts. 5. Do calf muscle and heel stretches daily. 6. Avoid prolonged standing or sitting. 7. Use night splint to keep foot flexed at night. Stop using it once pain is relieved. 8. Use analgesics like Ibuprofen for decreasing pain and inflammation. With proper lifestyle changes as above 90 % patients have relief and functionality. For any query consult again.

Hi. I broke my femor bone and got a plate around it with 20+ screws. Its been 8 yrs to the accident. Should I get it removed? How difficult the procedure would be? If I don't get it removed, will it create problem in future?

I will not recommend plate removal if it is not causing discomfort. Removing such a long plate & screws will lead to stress risers, may cause fracture.

Every now and then my middle trap muscle is pulled just beneath the right shoulder, sometime beneath the left shoulder as well. And this happens more often in the winter, as a result I feel mild pain (sometime severe pain) and neck movement becomes difficult. Usually I take pain killer for this, but its isn't helping.

You should practice regular stretching exercise. With minimum of 10 repetitions 10 seconds hold and twice daily to start with. Focus should be on bending the arm front pushing your elbow to the opposite shoulder.

Dear, I sympathize with you for your condition, being a diabetic you can develop multiple abscess all over, more so when you are on wysolone as it brings down the immunity status to a much lower degree, in fact being a diabetic you have a low immunity and adding wysolone will have further compounding effect. I am not sure why you developed dvt, it may be due to your sedentary habits due to your arthritis issue could be one and the main reason, however you have conflicting problems where you need to consult an able physician right away where your wysolone has to be stopped right away and you need an alternate medicine for arthritis, and you should be on long acting anticoagulants for your dvt.

Do take ift and ust for pain relief for 12 days followed by strengthening exercise from neuro physiotherapist apply hot water fomentation thrice a day for 7 days regularly do revert for further assistance best wishes.

Hello according to your condition you have to take hot water fermentation through towel and do it 3 times in a day duration-15 min along with stretching and back exercises like straingh leg raising, bridging with -20 min repetition -5 sec hold do it for 3 days sure you will get well soon take care.

Show me all reports of blood, urine etc. X rays of both knee joints (digital) this could be due to oa knee &/or obesity. Physiotherapy along with medicines will help. Do knee exercises. It may have to be further investigated rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with a soft bedding on it. Any way take multivitamins & other antioxidants along with. Ibuprofen 200mg od & sos x 5days caldikid plus (mankind) 1 tab odx10days you will need other supportive medicines also. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. Do ask for detailed treatment plan. Don't ignore. It could be beginning of a serious problem.
