Try few things for your back pain: - Apply Ice and Heat Heating pads and cold packs can comfort tender trunks. Most doctors recommend using ice for the first 48 hours after an injury -- particularly if there is swelling — and then switching to heat. You can use whichever you find comforting as long as your skin is protected. - Limit Bed Rest Studies show that people with short-term low-back pain who rest feel more pain and have a harder time with daily tasks than those who stay active. -Keep Exercising Activity is often the best medicine for back pain. Simple exercises like walking can be very helpful. But remember to move in moderation, Stay away from strenuous activities like gardening and avoid whatever motion caused the pain in the first place. -Maintain Good Posture Most people have poor posture when going about their daily activities, putting unnecessary strain on their backs. -Strengthen Your Core Most people with chronic back pain would benefit from stronger abdominal muscles. If the abdominals are weak, other areas must pick up the slack. When we strengthen the abdominals, it often reduces the strain on the lower back. - Improve Flexibility Too much tension and tightness can cause back pain. By increasing flexibility you need to put an equal load throughout the body from the feet all the way up to the head. -Sleep the Right Way The amount of rest you get is important, and so is the position you get it in. Sleeping in a bad position or on a mattress without support can cause back pain. Back sleepers should put pillows under their knees. Side sleepers should place pillows between their knees to keep their spine in a neutral position. Stomach sleeping causes the neck and head to twist and can put undue stress on the back. -Use Relaxation Techniques Research shows that practices such as meditation, deep breathing and yoga, which help put the mind at rest, can do wonders for the back. -See a Specialist Developing an individualized exercise plan is essential to managing chronic back pain. Some patients need more core strengthening while others benefit mainly from stretching and improving flexibility. Please consult a Orthopedic Physiotherapist for the right exercise plan. Best wishes.

Degeneration ofL1-L2, L2-L3 and L4-L5 lumbar intervertebral disc Posterior annular tear noted at L1-L2, L2-L3 and L4-LSlevels. At Ll-L2 level there is right paramidline protrusion, No foramina narrowing. At L2-L3, L3-L4 diffuse posterior disc bulge noted ,causing effacement of ventral thecal sac and inferior recess of bilateral neural foramina narrowing at L3-L4 level. At L4-L5 level, posterocentral and left forminal protrusion causing, significant canal stenosis and left neural foramina narrowing ,resulting in compression of exiting L4 and traversing LS nerve roots at this level. At LS-Sllevel, no disc bulge or herniation. Conus medullaris appear unremarkable. TECHNIQUE: The :rv1RsItudy of the lumbosacral spine was obtained by sagittal Tl and T2 weighted images and axial Tl and T2 weighted images through T121L1 to LS/S1 disc spaces. FINDINGS: The MRI study of the lumbosacral spine disclosed evidence of degeneration of lumbar intervertebral disc spaces depicted by low signal intensity on T2 and reduced height at T121L1, Ll/2, L2/3 and L4/S disc spaces. There is mild dorsolumbar kyphosis at L1I2. The spinal canal is of normal satisfactory caliber. The conus is of normal shape and normal signal. The L 112disclosed posterior right paracentral broad based disc protrusion. The L2/3 disclosed posterior left paracentral broad based disc protrusion with focal high signal intensity consistent with focal tear in the annulus fibrosus at posterior left paracentral region. The L4/5 disc space disclosed posterior central broad based disc protrusion with left predominance causing significant compression on the anterior surface of the thecal sac at this level and associated with narrowing of lateral recesses bilaterally more pronounced on the left side with compromising of the exiting left L5 nerve root. CONCLUSION: The MRl examination of the lumbosacral spine disclosed degenerative changes of lumbar intervertebral disc spaces more pronounced on T 121L1, L 112 and L4/5 with mild dorsolumbar kyphosis at L 112 and posterior right paracentral broad based disc protrusion at L 112, posterior left paracentral broad based disc protrusion at L2/3 and posterior central broad based disc protrusion at L4/5. Sir you are having left Lowe limb radiating pain along with tingling and Numbness, you can't walk for long because of leg pain. This is all because of nerve compression by disc material. As per the reports compression is significant but I can comment with confidence after seeing the mri films. Two options are there in your case if pressure over nerve is moderate we can try pain block injection or if pressure over nerve is severe then surgery is the only choice left. But we can decide the treatment modality after seeing the mri films only. Just to inform you now a days technology is so advance that hardly it required more then three stitches after the surgery. No bed rest you can go home next day your own. We are using minimal invasive techniques like endoscopic and microscopic surgery for such type of cases with excellent results.

I can understand that its tough to do your daily chores living with pain. Try changing your posture when sitting for long periods, take a break and do stretching exercises when sitting for long time. Also hot and cold fermentation can help. Back pain and leg pain can be due to many causes. Hope you feel better.

Lower back pain can happen due to several causes. However at your age it is often due to disc degeneration. This in common terms would mean early stages of spondylosis. An award winning scientific research done by my team revealed has shown that by the time Indians reach 30 years of age, 30 % start showing signs of disc degeneration and a handful of them start having episodes of back pain such as yours. There's no need to get worried as this is a part of the normal physiological process. For pain, I would advice you to take a pain killer twice a day for 5 days. Use hot compress twice daily for 15 mins each time and a gel (oxalgin nano gel) 3 times a day. Apart from this go for a walk twice a day. Avoid bending much and do not lift heavy weights and sit or squat on the floor. Go to a physiotherapist who will teach you core strengthening exercises. While the degeneration can not be reversed, it can be prevented from aggravating. If the pain doesn't decrease, you will need to be investigated further for other causes of back pain. Best of luck!

Hello, Is there any history of injury or hurt to the area? Any underlying medical condition? Avoid doing exercises which involves participation of back muscles for few days. Medication: Meantime, take homoeopathic medicines - Arnica 200 and Rhus Tox. 200 - take both of them thrice daily for 1 week. Also, apply Schwabe's Topi-Arnica and Topi MP Gel on the affected area in circular motions gently thrice a day. And wrap crepe bandage over it. Get back to me thereafter.

I have a back pain. I will use all pain killers tablet and creams. But I have a more pain why?

MSc in Orhopedic Physiotherapy (UK), BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Bangalore
I have a back pain. I will use all pain killers tablet and creams. But I have a more pain why?
Here are some tips for how to handle your back pain: -stop normal physical activity for the first few days. This will help relieve your symptoms and reduce any swelling in the area of the pain. -Apply heat or ice to the painful area. One good method is to use ice for the first 48 to 72 hours, and then use heat. Take pain relievers medicine. --While sleeping, try lying in a curled-up, fetal position with a pillow between your legs. If you usually sleep on your back, place a pillow or rolled towel under your knees to relieve pressure. -Find a mattress with back support. A good mattress should provide support for the natural curves and alignment of the spine. Medium-firm mattresses usually provide more back pain relief than firm mattresses. -Do not perform activities that involve heavy lifting or twisting of your back for the first 6 weeks after the pain begins. -Avoid bending forward and sitting in a place for long time -Good posture plays a key role in your spine health, helping to prevent additional back and neck pain and even injuries to spinal structures. Try to be aware of your posture and make good posture part of your normal routine. -head up, shoulders back, rear tucked under -Stand and walk with correct posture -Sit with support -Lift and carry carefully -And finally, keep moving:-Maintaining a static position for too long—more than twenty or thirty minutes at a time—is hard on the back. Prolonged static posture can slowly deplete elasticity from the tissues. By simply moving—be it a change of position, a stretch, or a short walk—the tissue elasticity needed to protect your joints can be restored and the associated discomfort reduced. -Stretching and strengthening exercises are important. But, starting these exercises too soon after an injury can make your pain worse. -Some Physiotherapy treatment like IFT current can give you relief. -Consult a Physiotherapist for detail assessment and management of your back pain. Best wishes.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Usually the penis glans beneath the foreskin is kept sensitive to give you maximum pleasure during vaginal sexual intercourse. So please do not try to reduce the sensation. Loose foreskin can be surgically corrected through a minor surgical procedure. Do consult a surgeon. Take care.

I met with an accident on Dec 2013 and my femur got fractured so I have a rod in my right leg. Till now I did not removed the rod do any problem persists in future?

Orthopedist, Solapur
Hi lybrate-user. It is not necessary to get the rod removed until and unless you face with the problems of difficulty in walking due to presence of rod, infection of the rod, breakage of the rod due to re trauma or in cases of re fracture of the bone itself. I'm saying this because removal of the rod itself is another surgical procedure and sometimes can be very challenging. Hence get it removed only if you have problems related to the presence of rod in your femur.
