Shoulder Dislocation!

MS - Orthopaedics, DNB (Orthopedics), MNAMS - Orthopaedics, Fellowship in Joint Replacement
Orthopedist, Jaipur

A shoulder dislocation occurs when the bones of the upper arm snap out of your shoulder blade, generally after suffering a major injury. The joints of the shoulder are the most flexible body joints, thereby, making them more prone to dislocation. In most of the cases, a dislocated shoulder can be fixed within a few weeks’ time with the help of proper diagnosis. There is a high chance of suffering from dislocations over and over again. A dislocated shoulder, if not treated immediately, can lead to further complications such as damage to the blood vessels and nerve around the affected area or tearing of the associated muscles or ligaments.

What can cause a shoulder dislocation

You can experience a dislocation in your shoulder joints due to the following reasons:

  1. Shoulder dislocation can occur if you play any kind of contact sports such as football or hockey. You are more susceptible to a dislocated shoulder if the sports or physical activities you engage in regularly involve the risk of suffering from falls such as gymnastics or volleyball.
  2. A dislocated shoulder is a common occurrence if you have suffered a major motor vehicle accident that might have affected your shoulder.
  3. You can also suffer from a dislocated shoulder if you have survived a fall in the recent past such as tripping from a ladder or similar injuries.

Symptoms of a dislocated shoulder

You are suffering from a dislocated shoulder if you exhibit the following signs and symptoms:

  1. Abnormal enlargement of the affected area or bruising
  2. Severe pain around the shoulder area due to a recurrent muscle spasm in the shoulder joints
  3. Extreme pain while moving the joint
  4. A sense of numbness or a tingling sensation near the affected area, for example, in areas around the neck or the arm
  5. Visibly deformed shoulder joints

Treatment for shoulder dislocation

The treatment for shoulder dislocation depends on the severity of the injury. The following treatments can be implemented with suggestion from the doctors:

  1. If you had recurrent instances of dislocated shoulders, your doctor might suggest a surgery to remedy the damaged blood vessels and nerves around the area.
  2. Depending upon the intensity of the pain, the doctor might implement a general manoeuvre procedure to relocate your shoulder bones. After the procedure is conducted, you will feel your pain significantly reducing.
  3. Your doctor can also recommend you to wear a sling around your shoulder area to regulate the movement of the shoulder joints for the first few days to about 3 weeks, depending upon the intensity of the pain.

Sciatica - 4 Most Common Exercises for it!

Sciatica - 4 Most Common Exercises for it!

The sciatic nerve is one of the largest nerves in the body. It goes from the lower back all the way down to the base of the leg. When there is a disorder associated with the sciatic nerve, it is known as Sciatica

Sciatica, however, does not necessarily need a surgery or a very elaborate procedure to fix the problem. Most commonly, it is treated simply by practicing a number of simple exercises. Here are some of the most common exercises prescribed to treat Sciatica:

  1. Reclining pigeon pose: There are three main forms of the pigeon pose. These are sitting, reclining and then forwarding. It is recommended that if you have very recently started your treatment for Sciatica, then certainly you should go for the reclining pose. In this pose, you are supposed to hold your left leg in the air at a right angle to your back. Then, hold your ankle against the knee. Finally, repeat this stretch with the right leg as well.
  2. Knee to opposite shoulder: In this stretch, the starting position is on your back side. You have to have your legs out and feet upwards. From this position, try to bring your right leg towards your left shoulder. Hold this for 30 seconds and then release and relax. Repeat this activity three times and repeat the whole procedure with your other leg. Only take your leg as far as it goes.
  3. Sitting spinal stretch: At the start of this exercise, sit on the ground with your legs going straight outwards and your feet flexed in the upward direction. Pull your left knee and put it on the outside of your right knee. Finally, place your right elbow on the left knee, so that your body turns to the left. Hold for 30 seconds and then relax. Repeat the procedure with the other knee.
  4. Standing hamstring stretch: Put your foot on an elevated surface such that it is above the floor, but not above hip level. Flex your toes forward such that your feet and legs are nearly in a straight line. Bend as far towards the foot as possible. However, do not stretch so far that you feel pain. Finally, repeat this procedure on the other side after release.

Acupuncture Therapy is the only treatment which gives cure to all patients suffering from occupational computer use hazard. Cervical Spondylosis an Occupational Hazard The occupational strain resulting from intensity and duration of working hours is taking a toll on the health of youths. Cervical spondylosis is afflicting the working class in the age group of 18 to 40 years, especially those in the IT sector. Percentage of such patients is increasing due to stress, pressure at work place and unhealthy food habits. With the rise in number of professionals like those at the call centre who remain confined to the desk or in front of computer for hours together in one posture, the number of people suffering from cervical spondylosis is on the rise. Neck pain can be caused by an injury, muscular problem or by a trapped nerve between vertebrae. Besides, inappropriate working or sleeping posture may also be responsible. It is a clinical syndrome resulting from degeneration of the intervertebral disc and consequent pressure on the cervical nerve roots or the cervical cord. An x-ray reveals the formation of osteophytes and loss of normal lordosis or forwards curve. This is essentially an extension of degenerative changes in the body as a whole. It is a degenerative disorder of the neck bones due to abnormal wear of the bone cartilage. This might lead to gradual compression of one or more than one nerve roots. It results in changes in sensation in arm, pain in neck and arm and weakness of upper limb muscles. Causes: Injury and muscular problem cause abnormal tear of joints, ligaments and the structures surrounding the joints. Trapped nerve between vertebrae. Long hour of reading or working on computer Watching TV and driving for long hours Bad posture Poor skeletal setup in the neck predisposes abnormal tear of the neck joints. Improper sleeping posture Symptoms: Headache Pain, stiffness in the neck, which may spread to other body parts, like shoulder and arm. Irritable, restless and fatigued, disturbed sleep and impaired work ability Numbness & weakness may appear in arms, hands, fingers and legs Pain at the back of the neck region, causing headache, altered sensation while combing hair Precaution: Do not bend neck for long duration while working in front of computer Avoid large thick pillow while sleeping Avoid sudden twisting of the neck Do neck-muscle building exercises Professionals who spend hours doing desk work or in front off the computers should take small breaks in between. Advice for patients: Avoid violent massage with deep pressure No manipulations by bone setters Exercise daily Drink milk and opt for calcium intake Anti-inflammatory medication, muscle relaxants Neck collar Physiotherapy, neck traction and diathermy. Note:- Prior Appointment is necessary for consultation.
