I have quit smoking since October 2015 and it was relapsed couple of days back. I also drinking moderately but daily. I want to quit both drinking and smoking. Please guide.

The combination of alcohol and smoking is deadly for your health. I am so glad that you are seeking to get rid of these habits and that will play a major role in your recovery. You must stop them both, abruptly and immediately. If you think that you will find it very difficult, then admit yourself to a hospital and go for de-addiction: which normally lasts for about two weeks. Then follow that up with addiction counseling from a professional for at least three years to completely get rid of these habits. If this is also not enough, then admit yourself into a de-addiction center and stay there for at least 6 months and after that attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the smoking and drinking just to ease the initial craving. Ultimately, it is your will power and the support that you receive from the medical fraternity and your close and dear ones. You must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called ‘cross addictions’ i.e. Another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as your primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide you on several measures and precautions you will need to take to stay with your resolve. I congratulate you on this fabulous decision that will benefit you. You are taking action that will have a major bearing on many lives.

Hand fingers particularly index and ring fingers do not bent fully as well as get stuck at times in both the hands . What precaution and application to over come this. I am a diabetic as well as hypertension patient . Taking alapathy .

Take rest. Warm compress can help reduce the pain. Pain reliving gels and ointments can be used also. If the pain persists please consult an orthopedic surgeon for medicines. I would recommend that you lose some weight.

I am feeling pain in different part of right hand alongwitg tingling since last one month and took Vitamin B tablet on advice of some doctor which reduced the frequency of tingling. Do abdominal exercises all core muscles exercise breathing exercises for about 10 minutes duration each time regularly follow balanced diet and hyderated do continue strengthening and stretching exercises from neuro physiotherapist or sports medicine rehab specialist best wishes.

Dear Lybrate user Back Pain becomes common complication pre or postnatal. Anesthesia while c section it's part of that procedure shouldn't be bothered. Back pain can be curable with accurate back exercises and healthy nutritional diet. Sometimes when back muscles got tight or weak cause back pain. Take hot water formentation and apply muscle relaxant gel twice a day. Back exercises must be with advice of qualified and experienced physiotherapist only.

Health Tip Knee Pain and Exercise Therapy

 

Knee pain is second most pain next to back pain in middle age. It could be due to physical injury or by pathological reasons. And correct alignment should be maintained in sitting walking or standing involving body pressure to the limbs expecially to knees. In case of pathological causes should be watched and followed to control infections or to improve immunological components in the body to support the efficiency in managing the resistance against all agents

 

Exercise science or therapy plays a very vital role in controlling the pain and to reduce symptoms. The foremost exercises are to strengthen the quadriceps and hamstring muscles, which could be done by keeping a pillow or small bedsheets preferably cotton beneath knee and pressing hard for 5 to 7 seconds and repeating the same for 15 times resting for 3 second in every repitations (see the pic attached). And hamstring muscle strengthening by lifting straight into 90% without bending the knees and holding the same for 3 to 5 seconds as possible and repeating it for 10 to 15 times for one duration, better to do for twice daily in stipulated time regularly, along with calcium rich and vitamin d3 in sufficlient level.

 

For pain even hot and cold water fomentation for thrice a day for 5 days regularly can be given to receive locally, for worst pain management physiotherapy interferential therapy (ift) and vacuumtherapy can be given for 7 to 10 days followed by strengthening exercise under guidance from physiotherapist

This is a general low back ache and for this you can follow these measures: one keep a pillow right under the knee while sleeping, next is you can keep ice in the painful area for about 5--10 minutes, if pain still persists you can stretch your body by twisting the waist on both sides how we used to do in the school drill similarly you can try. Check out whether you have any flu or any viral fever which might also be the reason for other pain.

First of all check your posture when you are lifting any material like heavy bucket. And try to lift the heavy bucket without bending your back. You may lift the bucket after bending your knees only. This will definitely help you. * gentle massage with lukewarm mustard oil of your waist area will also give you relief. * surya namaskar is only exercise which you need to do. * in diet vegetable protein of cereal, b complex supplements and half teaspoon of haldi in a cup of milk for seven days will give you enough relief.

Apply Hot Fomentation twice daily .Avoid bending in front. Postural Correction- Sit Tall, Walk Tall. .Extension Exercises x 15 times x twice daily – lying on tummy, take left arm up for 3 seconds, then bring it down, right arm up for 3 seconds, bring down. Bring right leg up, hold for 3 seconds, bring it down. Then right leg up and hold for 3 seconds and bring it down. Repeat twice a day- 10 times. Bhujang Asana ? Lie flat on your stomach, keeping the palms out, bend the neck backward, take a deep breath and while holding it for 6 seconds, raise the chest up. Release breath and relax your body. Repeat the exercise 15 times twice daily. Core Strengthening Exercises- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day.

Kindly show me a photograph of the affected part. Rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick matress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Do hot fomantation. Paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. You will need other supportive medicines also. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, contact me again. Do not ignore. It could be beginning of a serious problem.

Exercises for Spasm and Back Pain

A pain in the back can make even small, daily activities like bathing, getting dressed or even bending down to pick up things difficult. A quick and thorough treatment of such problems can prevent the problem from worsening. In such cases, there is an obvious need to exercise the lower back muscles. However, before performing these exercises, a lot of preparation is required to get your back into shape. Taking enough time to warm up and stretch the muscles can make a significant difference between helping and making the problem worse.

Why should you exercise your lower back? 
The main reason for exercising the lower back region is to make it move gently through all types of motion so that it can have a greater range of movement during daily activities. Core strengthening exercises and stretches are recommended to prevent back pain. While doing these exercises, try avoiding activities that cause pain or discomfort. Pain is a sign of problem and one must be careful to avoid it during these exercises as it shows that you are hurting yourself in some way or the other. 

Activities to be followed:
The following activities can help in increasing the flow of blood to the sore areas of your back and prepare for more activity, thus reducing the chance of aggravation.

  1. Soak in a tub of water: Fill a tub with water to a level that you will tend to float and thus reduce the force of gravity on your spine and muscles. Epsom salt can be added to relax the muscles. Do not to sit up too high in as it can cause stress to the low back discs. Slide down low enough so that the back is allowed to flatten a small amount, thus reducing disc and muscle stress.
  2. Use local heat to reduce muscle spasms: Soak a large towel with hot water and wring it out. Place it on the low back where your pain is located. You can also place a damp towel in the microwave oven long enough so as to heat the towel. Be careful not to overheat the towel. Place the warm cloth on the area of your pain for about ten minutes.
  3. Hip slides: Lie on your back. First move one hip and then the other towards your shoulders. Raise your right hip towards the right shoulder and then the left hip towards the left shoulder. Raise one of your hips and then the other up off the floor so that your back twists a little. Raise the right hip off from the floor and then do the same with your left hip.
  4. Windmill: This is a general back exercise. Create big circles with your arms by rotating them in clockwise and anticlockwise circles.

These activities are an excellent way to reduce back spasms and the stress on your back.

Again my question revolves around my previous one. My left forearm is thinner due volkmann ischemic contracture. I took the treatment about 15 years back. Now I am 31. Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

I am 52 yrs now. For d past many years particularly for d last one year I am experiencing severe backpain due to depreciation of disc. My doctors after going through x ray informed me that there is no effective treatment but to strengthen the back muscles by proper exercise.
