Please check her vit d level. Try some remedies for joint pain: -ice packs can be used to soothe hot, swollen joints. -heat packs help to relax tense, tired muscles. -splinting of swollen or painful joints may be helpful, a physiotherapist or an occupational therapist (ot) may provide temporary splints for you. -pace yourself: overdoing things can increase your pain, but so can not doing enough. Your physiotherapist can advise you on increasing your activity level at a rate you can cope with and on finding the right balance between rest and activity. -take regular graded exercise: graded exercise starts slowly and increases in small steps. This will help you to strengthen your muscles and joints and increase your fitness. Improving your general fitness and stamina will help you to increase your activity level without increasing your pain. -mobilising, stretching and strengthening: your physiotherapist will assess your muscle strength and the range of movement in your joints, and advise on techniques and exercises so you can keep your joints working as well as possible. Best wishes.

What is the Difference Between Sprains and Strains?

Bachelor of Physiotherapy
Physiotherapist, Kolkata
What is the Difference Between Sprains and Strains?

A sprain refers to a break or a tear in any of the ligaments of your body. A ligament is a band consisting of tissues that connect the bones at any given joint in our body.

A strain on the other hand refers to a tear or a break in the entire muscle itself or a tendon (the band of tissues that connect the muscle to the bones).

Occurrence: Sprains usually take place due to unforeseen incidents like falls, accidents, and such other things that forces the body part to go out of its normal position. The most common types of sprains that people suffer from are ankle sprains which affect about 25,000 people every day on a worldwide basis.Strains usually happen when you twist a whole muscle or a tendon. This condition most commonly occurs in cases of sportspersons who are engaged in contact sports like hockey, football, rugby, and such others.

Symptoms :The identification signs of sprains and strains are mostly very similar, which are listed below:

  1. Pain and discomfort in the joints
  2. Visible swelling or inflammation seen on the joints
  3. Bruising of the affected area
  4. Tenderness and softness of the affected joint

The overall intensity of the above mentioned symptoms might differ basis on the severity of the condition that is directly proportional to the nature of injury that you have faced. Some pains are so light that it may not affect your daily routine at all, whereas some pains are so intense, that you might not be able to move your affected joint at all.

Treatment: Some of the common methods to cure a sprain or a strain are listed below:

  1. Rest the area which is affected
  2. Apply ice bags or cold compress to soothe the pain
  3. Compress the affected joint using a compression tape
  4. Place the affected joint on an elevated area to speed up the healing process

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

This could simply be because of B12 deficiency as it is required for nerve functioning...and deficiency of this vitamin can cause such symptoms. So, get yourself checked for B12 deficiency and start a supplement as per your doctor's advice.

Hi, I met an accident a month ago that led to fractures in my tibia and fibula bones. Apart from that it lead to a foot drop condition. To determine the severity of the same an EMG Nerve Conduction test was done. The neuro physician suggested that I might need a surgery to fix the foot drop. How frequently does that happen? Kindly help.

ms orthopaedics, mbbs
Orthopedist, Noida
Foot drop happens when the common peroneal injury gets injured around fibular neck naturally. Or When there is a damage to the nerve by surgery or by tourniquet or direct pressure. Time to recovery before making a decision to operate is 6-9 months. Surgery is difficult and mainly revolves around tendon transfers. By that time try doing passive ankle exercises and maintain plantigrade posture at ankle.
