If the mouth ulcer is causing a lot of pain, gently rub a small ice cube over the spot or rinse your mouth with ice-cold water. You could also chew on a clove bud (lavang) and direct the juice generated to the area where the ulcer is located. Clove buds are a great ingredient to cure sore throat too. To prevent the ulcerated area from getting infected, make it a point to rinse your mouth with a little salt water. Remember, this won’t make the ulcer disappear, but it can help reduce the pain. Honey is a natural humectant. It helps reduce scarring and hastens the process of new tissue growth. This, along with its anti-microbial effect ensures faster healing of the mouth ulcer. Chew a few leaves of tulsi along with some water about three to four times every day. This will help in getting rid of ulcers faster and also have a preventive action against their recurrence. Applying a little coconut oil directly onto the mouth ulcer or chewing some coconut (fresh or dry) helps reduce pain and inflammation and hence, ulcers heal faster. Mix some sugar to crushed khus-khus seeds and consume this mixture for instant relief from ulcers. You could apply a little ghee directly to the ulcerated area, or drink a glass of buttermilk two or three times every day. Mouth ulcers left untreated generally go away in a week or so; with these home remedies, you can expect faster relief. However, if you notice an ulcer in the mouth that is persistently present although it does not cause you any pain, do not neglect it or try to treat it with home remedies beyond a few days. Make it a point to see a doctor soon because often, a painless mouth ulcer is one of the earliest signs of oral cancer.

The type of treatment you have for toothache /sensitivity/swelling will depend on the cause of the pain, so your dentist will examine your mouth and may carry out an X-ray to try to identify the problem. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by tooth decay, your dentist will remove the decayed area and replace it with a filling. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by a loose or broken filling, the filling will be taken out, any decay will be removed and a new filling put in place. •If the pulp inside your tooth is infected, you may need root canal treatment. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp and then inserting a special type of filling to seal the tooth and prevent re-infection. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling can't be treated using these methods, or if your tooth is impacted (wedged between another tooth and your jaw), it may need to be removed.

White spots on the tongue or in the mouth can be an advanced symptom of a serious medical condition or my imply something not serious. When you experience this symptoms of white spots, it is a best idea you visit your doctor. Apart from sexual transmitted diseases (chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, or AIDs ), there are a number of causes that can cause white spots around your mouth. These may include: Excessive dry mouth If your mouths stay dry for long periods, there are possibilities you will develop white spots or patches around your mouth or tongue. This is sometimes referred to as cotton mouth. Thrush this is a growth of yeast that has manifested itself in the mouth. These white spots can develop on the gums, cheeks, or the roof of the mouth or even the tongue. Migratory glossitis this is sometimes referred to as geographic tongue. It is a condition that presents itself as tiny, pinkish- white bumps [papillae], which are actually short, fine, hair- like projections. This condition is noncancerous, and has no risks to the affected person. Oral/ mouth cancer one of the common signs of oral cancer is white spots that cover the inner parts of the mouth and tongue. Special testing is required to ascertain if it is really oral cancer that causes you white spots in mouth. If this condition of white spots or patches in the mouth happens to you for the first time, it should not last for long- not more than two weeks. If they recarry or stay for more than two weeks, it is important to visit your doctor who will find out the cause of the white spots.

Do not use your teeth for doing something other than chewing food. Using them for cracking nuts, removing bottle tops or ripping open packaging can result in chipped or broken teeth.

Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need minor to major surgical procedures. You may consult me in person too. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush.

I have been seeing a lot of questions on bad breath. Bad breath is caused by many factors like calculus, food debris, poor oral hygiene, use of tobacco, other medical problems like decreased saliva due to radiation, or any other medication's. It may be also due to gastric problems and worm infestation. The most common treatment is a professional cleaning and maintaining good oral hygiene. People with decreased saliva can chew on bubble gum or sip citrus fruits to stimulation of salivary gland. Patients with acid reflux should consult a gastrointestinal specialist.

How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

Mouth breathing in children is very common and while a kid with open mouth might seem cute, it is not always the case. The parents need to be made aware that a child breathing through the mouth all the time is not normal and it is high time they find a way to manage it.

A little understanding of the effects of the mouth breathing habit on the child's health in general and oral health in particular can be an eye-opener for the parent. For an educated person, there are obvious symptoms, which indicate that the child is a mouth-breather.

These symptoms include:

  1. Dryness of the lips
  2. Crowding of the front teeth
  3. Snoring
  4. Sleeping with the mouth open
  5. Recurrent infections of the airways including sinusitis and middle ear infections
  6. Bad breath

Common causes include:

  1. Chronic nasal obstruction/congestion because of which the child is not able to get enough oxygen through the nose.
  2. Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
  3. Thumb or finger-sucking habit
  4. Recurrent respiratory infections

Effects of mouth breathing on oral health:

Mouth breathing may seem like a harmless habit, but has serious effects on the oral and dental health of the child. Some of them are discussed below.

  1. Dry mouth: A constantly open mouth can lead to drying up of the saliva. This in turn leads to reduced effects of saliva including the flushing effect on the bacteria and the food deposits. This leads to increased chances of tooth decay and gum diseases.
  2. Tooth decay: With reduced saliva, the pH remains acidic for a longer period of time, leading to increased chances of tooth decay.
  3. Gum diseases: Reduced amounts of saliva also leads to increased gum disease and periodontal disease as the bacteria are not removed and have a conducive environment to act upon.
  4. Facial development: A mouth breathing child maintains a different posture than a nose breather. This leads to a narrow and long face, flattened nose, smaller nostrils, reduced facial tone, thin upper lip, pouty upper lip, and a small lower jaw.
  5. Speech: An open mouth causes the tongue to thrust into the palate when talking. This leads to altered pronunciation of some sounds; especially and can cause lisping.
  6. Braces: Mouth breathing causes multiple challenges including prolonged treatment period, inability to close the gaps, reduced stability of the realigned teeth, and increased chances of relapse. The added complication of increased gum disease and tooth decay makes it worse. The habit needs to be corrected first before going in for braces.

If that sounds like a long list, they are not all inclusive. Early intervention in the habit can correct and negate all these effects. Talk to your dentist to know how to help your mouth breathing child.

For sparkling teeth you can sprinkle a little salt on the toothpaste before brushing.
Rubbing of bay leaf once in a week also helps. But keep in mind that it is best to go to the dentist for teeth whitening.
