Smoking is a huge risk for lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, accounting for more than 75 percent of all deaths from these disorders. Smoking doubles the risk for cardiovascular disease deaths, but, because this disease is more prevalent, it accounts for as many smoking deaths as cancer and lung disease. The third major cause of tobacco-related mortality is chronic obstructive lung disease. Other common smoking-related diseases include low-birth-weight offspring, perinatal complications, other cancers (e.g., throat, bladder, and pancreas), and ulcers. Second-hand smoke increases the risk of cancer and heart disease in spouses and the incidence of respiratory and ear problems in children.
The tar in cigarette smoke is responsible for the cancers. Irritants and ciliotoxins appear to be responsible for lung diseases. Carbon monoxide and clotting factors appear to be the most likely causes of cardiovascular disease. The role of nicotine in cardiovascular disease appears to be much smaller than previously thought, and how many perinatal problems (including sudden infant death syndrome) are caused by carbon monoxide or by nicotine is debatable. Smokeless tobacco, pipes, and cigars cause oral cancers, especially when accompanied by heavy alcohol use.
Cessation of smoking almost eliminates the risk of heart disease in 5 years and of lung cancer in 20 years; however, the benefits of cessation are highly dependent on duration of smoking.

Measure the magnitude--Taking 10 puffs per cigarette × 20 cigarettes per day × 365 days per year × 20 years results in millions of drug self-administrations.

Cessation of smoking almost eliminates the risk of heart disease in 5 years and of lung cancer in 20 years; however, the benefits of cessation are highly dependent on duration of smoking.

if you wants to know more details on how to quit smoking .Let me know.

Dear lybrate-user, anger and aggression are emotions. Anger comes when you become irritated. Irritation happens when you don't like something, or when something is repeated. As anger is an emotion, it should be vent out. You should be able to throw anger out instead of controlling it. But more perfect will be, know the frustrating situations and stop being emotional. If practiced properly, you will not get irritated at those circumstances at all. Those techniques are much easier to understand. Take care.

My last period was on 7-6-2012 so technically I was expecting on 5-7-2017 but it didn't happen and I was under impression that I might be pregnant. Change in life (as you have gone with marriage) may have some changes in our body. Especially females may face such issues frequently due to their complex hormonal system. 6 day delay is an insignificant time to diagnose something. I would suggest not to worry. Secondly, this slight pain and change in color in the breast can also be seen in connection with slight hormonal disturbance. Again, it is not worth worrying. I would recommend to observe the same symptoms for another three months, if it continues you can contact me for the same.

I went though alcohol rehab 10 years ago. On the last day of rehab I was given alcohol .as soon as I consumed the alcohol the air rushed out of me and I was given oxygen immediately. This was given as a deterrent and I was told if I were to drink alcohol this is what would happen to me. What happened? Can you please explain?

Dear Mr. lybrate-user, As a part of treatment, psychiatrists often suggest certain medication which will counter the alcohol intake and the person can have nauseating feelings or some bodily uneasiness. Alcohol consumption, as such is bad for your health, please do not resort to alcohol again. The medicine you take will do no harm until unless you take alcohol. Be happy and safe! Best of luck.

How to have confidence in me to achieve my goals I am unable to concentrate and my mind is not supporting me always lazy but I want to do something every day my mind thinks of my future but body is not supporting I want to do hard work buy I am not doing.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, yet so many people struggle to find it. Sadly, this can be a vicious circle: people who lack self-confidence can find it difficult to become successful. After all, most people are reluctant to back a project that's being pitched by someone who was nervous, fumbling, and overly apologetic. On the other hand, you might be persuaded by someone who speaks clearly, who holds his or her head high, who answers questions assuredly, and who readily admits when he or she does not know something. Confident people inspire confidence in others: their audience, their peers, their bosses, their customers, and their friends. And gaining the confidence of others is one of the key ways in which a self-confident person finds success. The good news is that self-confidence really can be learned and built on. And, whether you’re working on your own confidence or building the confidence of people around you, it’s well-worth the effort!

I am 20 years old with 4. 9 height girl now a days I am getting depressed. how to overcome this?

Hypnotherapist, DCS, BSIC, Advanced Trainee of Transactional Analysis, Advanced Skills in Counselling
Psychologist,
We would need more information like since when, depressed about what, what are your symptoms etc to help you. Yet it will be good if you see a counsellor and psychiatrist in your city. However, in depression, it is suggested that you look at the positive side of things, find meaning in whatever you consider as a loss to you, exercise a lot, take a walk in the sun, have friends and a social life who are funny, cheerful and progressive, eat healthy food, sleep on time and get up on time, have a daily plan of activities and make sure that you achieve most of it. Negative thinking needs to be challenged with counter thoughts that bring in contradicting evidence. Take support of your family or friends to come out of depression as its difficult to remain self motivated. Yoga, meditation, ayurveda, homeopathy also help a lot in depression without any side effects.

Tips for Good Mental Health
Tips for Good Mental Health

1. Know the friends or people who tend to wear you out, and deliberately limit the time you spend with them.
2. Be aware of how your thought patterns change throughout the day, and challenge these thought patterns when they’re harsh or negative.
3. Recognise that it is normal to struggle with your feelings, and feelings can be fickle – so don’t let them rule your life.
4. Set some personal goals that use your talents and your gifts. It’s good to stretch ourselves, and to be all that we can be.
5. Be gentle with yourself when you are anxious, tired and stressed. Be kind, and understanding – and give yourself a break.
6. Self-nurturing is crucial for a healthy self esteem. You need to treat yourself as you would treat a special friend.
7. Remember: we ALL fail. It’s just normal part of life. What matters is you’re learning and you’re changing over time.

Thanks for your query. Death is something that is inevitable for all of us. But we have to remember that comitting suicide is not the end of our problems. We have to prepare for death just like we prepare for an evaluation. Encourage your father to focus on afterlife and how he can put efforts on being success ful in the consequences after death. Having good thoughts, reading good books, good helping behaviour towards self and others, trying to do as much good and trying to be as much good, even in small gestures creates a positive notion about life before death and after it. What he needs is counselling. For more details contact me in private section. Thanks.

She will be fine. Let her complete her studies at this point of time. She can do her PG in Psychiatry not a problem. If she has seen a problem with behavior related to marriage earlier might have caused her a trauma/ she may need counselling under proper guidance. She might take some time. But you should not press her now, as it is a sensitive issue for a woman.

Since it is of such recent origin, I can assure you that if you cooperate with the therapies, your prognosis should be very good. You must meet with a counselor first and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor too. Please do so immediately. You must investigate if the origin of this problem is from childhood, then talk to your parents and see if they remember any incidents from your childhood, even in prenatal life, of any contributing factors. The counselor will be able to help out with this information. You can follow these simple rules too: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love: find someone to love and to love you back, if you are not married already. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive everyday and learn to be contended with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly.
