Hydroxyzine - has anyone else decided to stop all medicine and battle anxiety naturally and spiritually?
Many have done so and successfully too. However, all medical intervention and stoppage must be monitored by the doctor. S/he will know how much dosage can be reduced and when. After careful reduction and your alternative efforts, a gradual and definite reduction may be initiated successfully. A counselor has to be involved to assist you with the other skills that will enable you process the natural ways. Of course your cooperation is absolutely essential for any success.

She is forgetting everything and not able to memorize .For eg. If she is going to shop, she forgets where she's going and what she has to buy. She is afraid too and talks some non sense out of fear. This started happening a week before. She has exams but she's afraid she will leave the paper blank.

Dear Lybrate user, Anxiety disorders are a category of mental disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear, where anxiety is a worry about future events and fear is a reaction to current events. These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as a racing heart and shakiness. There are a number of anxiety disorders: including generalized anxiety disorder, a specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and panic disorder among others. While each has its own characteristics and symptoms, they all include symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety medicines alone cannot cure anxiety disorders mainly because medicines do not alter behavior. Behavior change and Continuous practice of the changed behavior cure anxiety. I suggest anxiety education, progressive counseling and progressive psychotherapy. I assure you complete cure. I need to know more about your anxiety so that I will be able to diagnose it properly and provide you tips to overcome and manage your anxiety. Take care.

Whenever I think about the past I feel very angry and frustrated. And whenever I carry my positive thoughts I feel very excited and energetic... But it last only for few hours ... Then I start think about something else which gives me the negative thoughts and will become very angry

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
If you indulge in the past, you will definitely get angry because there will always be things that could have been done differently and that could have produced better results. So there will be regrets. Now we cannot turn back the clock back nor change the past. So that exercise is impossible and futile. But you can learn from them to better improve the present and future. By locking yourself in the past, you become a prisoner of it. The only way to look is, forward. And it looks like you are doing well with that. Learn to stay with the positive and strengthen that position. Because it is still a weak state in you, it will be quite easy to revert back to history and feel the regrets. It is a conscious effort and regular practice that will eventually win this battle. Perhaps there are some things that need to be dealt with about your past. Talk to a counselor and deal with them to completely eradicate it from your mind. Remember it is not possible to remove the memory but it is possible to purge the past memories of its negative energy or force. Keep me posted of your success.

I am 20 years old I have a habit of smoking between 1-5 sticks per day what should I do to stop it and is it harmful to smoke 2 cigarettes per day?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Congratulations that you want to quit smoking. Tobacco consumption, either through smoke or other edible forms, is always harmful. The desire to quit is a good starting point. The best way to quit is to know more about the ill-effects of tobacco. The knowledge is astounding and scary. That information itself should help you to want to quit. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. There are more than 4000 harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke!!! You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. Then you need to identify why you smoke: there is an oral need, the nicotine effect, the psychological effect of covering up some other issue, for style, to impress, etc. You may discover that the reasons may be unimportant at this stage because you have become too addicted and the habit has become compulsive. You should start exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need, for a little while. You may take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces substantially. You may join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here?s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world ? you can start the cessation all over again. Don?t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. As Mark Twain once jocularly said, ?giving up smoking is easy; I have done it many times?. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

10 Study Tips to Improve Your Learning Study Tip 1: Underlining Underlining is one of the simplest and best known study tips. It’s easy to highlight the most significant parts of what you’re reading. One key sentence per paragraph and a few important phrases here and there. You can only retain a certain amount so it’s best to retain the most important information. Study Tip 2: Make your own note and taking notes is one of the most widespread study skills out there. Essentially the aim of note-taking is to summarise lectures or articles in your own words so you can easily remember the ideas. Study Tip 3: Mind mapping A good Mind map can save you many hours of study and further consolidate your knowledge for your exams. Mind Maps are an extremely versatile tools. They can be used for brainstorming, outlining essays or study topics and for general exam preparation, ExamTime offers the ability to create Mind Maps quickly and easily which makes them the ideal tool when it comes to exams. Study Tip 4: Flash cards:- Using these are a particularly effective method of learning when trying to assimilate different facts, dates, formulas or vocabulary. Subjects such as History, Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Geography or any language are made much easier if you incorporate Flashcards in to your study. Study Tip 5: Case Studies Sometimes it can be difficult to grasp the implications of some theories. This is where studying case studies can be a big help. Case studies can help you visualise a theory and place it in a more familiar and realistic context. This is especially useful in business or law subjects. Study Tip 6: Quizzes are an excellent way to review study notes in the weeks and days before an exam. Quizzes can show where your strengths and weaknesses are, so it allows you to focus your efforts more precisely. Moreover, if you share your Study Quiz with your classmates and test each other as much as possible you can discover even more details and areas you may have overlooked. So before any exam, make sure you create and share a bunch of different Quizzes with your Friends. Study Tip 7: Brainstorming This is another study technique that is ideal for studying with friends and/or classmates. Brainstorming is a great way to expand every possible idea out of any topic. Just get a bunch of friends together and shoot the breeze, there are no wrong answers when brainstorming – just talk and capture the ideas, you can review afterward. Study Tip 8: Mnemonic Rules Mnemonics are especially useful when memorising lists and sets. Mnemonics rules basically work by associating certain concepts with other concepts that are more familiar to us. There are many different ways to make mnemonics and these can be individual to the person. Study Tip 9: ORGANISE your study One of the most effective study skills is also one of the most often overlooked; this is organising your study. Creating a TIME TABLE gives you goals and a time in which to achieve them. Having a study timetable as you study is greatly motivational Study Tip 10: Drawing Many people find it easier to recall images rather than text that is why they are better able to memorise concepts if they associate them with pictures or drawings. If you find answer helpful please click on “helpful” tab for knowing my efforts are useful.

I am not able to concentrate on my studies because of mobile internet and laptop what should I do?

M.Phil - Psychology
Psychologist, Bangalore
At present times we all are using internet for our work. Try to use the internet for the study purpose. You try to select what you want to watch in internet. Make your time table. You search for study materials from the internet along with your academic text book. You will find a very interesting way of learning and you knowledge will increase. Try avoiding going much towards entertaining parts of internet, even though it is very attractive part. You are an matured individual. You should have control on your life. It may appear very difficult in the beginning but slowly you will realize the change. So, just try to use the internet in different ways and you will see things will fall in line.

Its good that you have taken that decision. The hard part is sticking to that decision. Motivate yourself to abstain and you can make use of nicotine gum/ patches. Withdrawal or your craving will peak in 48-72 hrs. Abstinence is the key.

If you want better results while studying, revision is the key. Repeated revision consolidates the information in the brain and helps to retain the information. Other than that, try a daily exercise of recalling your entire day in as much detail as possible before you sleep. Initially only important or superficial details are recalled, but with practice minor details can also be recalled. Be more organized; make lists. Use acronyms and mnemonic devices to help you remember. Take 45 minute slots followed by a 5-15 minute break. Eat and at proper times. Drink plenty of water. Find time for exercise or meditation. Keep time for proper revision at end of study session. Revise before you sleep.

My father is addicted to alcohol. I want him to leave this. Can you suggest me some ways which I can do ti let him leave drinking.

Psychologist, Pune
Hi can understand your concern no person who is addicted will want to get treated or will admit that he has a problem. Firstly as a son wud advise you be suggestive with your father do not get angry or instruct him. Try taking him for opd treatment some medication will help him on physical level and counselling as well. If not contact a senior a member who can come home and talk to your father it will really help. Immediate help is important he will motivate him. Do not worry things will take positive turn but you be calm and patient handle him with care. When there is someone suffering from illness how you handle it? in same manner you have to tackle it at times it may require some time.
