I have voice problem I can't speak loudly what should I do to solve the problem to get a normal voice.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS

Breathe deeply and exhale on a hisssssssing sound. Repeat 10 times. Proper breathing is the foundation for a healthy voice AND control over nervous energy that can make the voice quiver. Say “Mm-mmm (as in yummy) Mmm-hmm (like yes) ” Repeat 5 times. This develops mask resonance, which creates a clean and vibrant sound by creating a clean approximation of the cords and a resonance that will sound great and project easily. Say “Mm-mmm. Mmm-hmm.” up and down your vocal range, from low to middle to high and back again, 10 times.

Dear Lybrate user. In many of the cases Stammering has two important reasons. Vocal chord misalignment or other problems are the primary reason. For this vocal chord complaint, you should consult an ENT specialist and get it corrected. Second reason is purely psychological. Stammer therapy can help you in psychological reasons. Take care.

Homeopathic Remedies For Stammering!

Homeopathic Remedies For Stammering!

Stammering or stuttering is a type of speech impairment where sounds or syllables are repeated involuntarily or there are unintended gaps in between words when the person is unable to make the desired sound.

People develop stutters due to genetic flaws, motor functioning defects, coordination problems or due to psychological stressors. The condition can result in anxiety, depression and withdrawal from verbal communication.

How does homeopathy help?

A stutter can be practiced away or corrected by speech therapy but there is no specific medicine that can be used to cure stammering. Homeopathic medicines can provide relief from the symptoms by fixing flawed nervous functions, improve motor coordination and modify the vocal apparatus. Different homeopathic treatments can be used depending on the nature of the condition.

The following is a list of homeopathic remedies and lifestyle changes that can be used to address the problem:

  1. Foods rich in vitamin B6 like nuts, fish, bananas and chicken should be consumed regularly by children who have a stutter to help with motor functions.
  2. Adults should avoid caffeine, tobacco and other recreational drugs as they cause hyper-stimulation of the nervous system.
  3. Stramonium (jimsonweed) can be used when the stammering is violent and the person distorts the facial muscles heavily in order to be able to speak.
  4. Lychopodium (clubmoss) can be useful for stammering as well as depression, memory weakness and sleep problems. This is especially helpful if the patient struggles with the last few words of a sentence.
  5. Spigelia is beneficial for a mild stutter at the beginning of a sentence, often followed by undisturbed speech.
  6. Causticum is prescribed when emotional excitability causes stammering, twitching of the facial muscles or problems in the vocal chords.
  7. Staphysagria can aid in reducing social anxiety which often causes stammering i.e. the stammer only happens while interacting with strangers or authority figures.
  8. Nux vomica (strychnine) is the medicine to use when stammering is a result of extreme stress or over work.
  9. Fright or shock often causes speechlessness or stammering. Aconite can provide immediate relief in such cases.
  10. Lachesis is an effective homeopathic medicine when the patient stutters over specific letters or syllables.
  11. Gelsemium is used to treat stuttering after severe viral infections when the patient complains of a heavy tongue and lack of general coordination. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Homeopath.

I have difficulty while speaking. The words that I say becomes unclear for other. I feel more saliva comes from the glands and causes my speech difficult to understand. Does have anything to do with lack of drinking water or a lack confidence I don't go for the latter case because it happens during a casual talk.

I've noticed a developing tremor in my left arm over the last month that I've never had before, and it can get distracting enough to prevent daily tasks such as making coffee without spilks, and I've had a verbal stammering and stuttering problem. It's not severe, but I've become easily annoyed by small, simple tasks in my life and I'm uncertain what caused the onset. Is this an immediate concern, or one I can consult my family doctor about?

You must consult your doctor. These are not normal symptoms. Apart from the doctor please do meet with a counselor. At your age a lot of things could happen around hormonal imbalances and also from developmental issues that will come up for the last time seeking a resolution. Together they can compound matters to make you feel disturbed. But whatever the case tumors must never be neglected.

Hi, you need to consult a speech language pathologist (slp) also called as speech therapist who would do an informal and formal tests to identify your problem and diagnose your condition and also help you in treating your speech problem with an appropriate plan. Stammering does not have any medicinal cure but you can also speak better with therapy by a certified speech therapist. There is no allopathic remedy for this.

I have tongue tie. I cannot speak faster in public conversation. I have to apply lot of pressure in my tongue. I want to know whether tongue tie release will help me in my speech? How much it is effective?

Masters in Speech Pathology and Audiology
Speech Therapist, Gurgaon
Hi lybrate-user. If the tongue tie is partial and you can articulate sounds like t and d correct then generally a surgery is not advised. Its better to get tongue tie removed in childhood as speech sounds are developed normally without help. Anyways if you are not comfortable then go to ent surgeon.

Aphasia - Factors That Put You At Risk!

Aphasia - Factors That Put You At Risk!

Aphasia is a communication disability that can result from damage or injury to those parts of the brain that process language. It can happen due to stroke, brain tumors, accidents, or brain infection. A brain injury which damages parts of the brain that deal with language can also bring on Aphasia. Aphasia can also be caused by dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. Aphasia is sometimes also a symptom of epilepsy or other neurological disorders.

It’s more common in older adults, especially after a stroke. What happens in Aphasia is that the affected person is unable to understand or use words. He or she may also:

  1. Have difficulty speaking and finding the "right" words to express themselves verbally
  2. Have problems understanding conversation
  3. Have problems reading and comprehending written words
  4. Have problems writing words
  5. Is unable to calculate or use numbers
  6. Has a tendency to use gibberish words as a part of speech

There are various types of Aphasia, differing in certain important ways from each other.
Aphasia can also be mild or severe. With mild Aphasia, the patient is able to converse, though he may not be able to find the right word or may not understand complex conversations.
However, in severe Aphasia, a person may lose his ability to communicate completely which means he can’t speak or understand any conversation and may also not be able to read or write.

Three things that aid Aphasia recovery are

  1. Speech Therapy
  2. Family Support
  3. Persistence

Treatment for Aphasia depends on factors like:

  1. Age
  2. Cause of brain injury which causes Aphasia
  3. Type of Aphasia
  4. Position and size of the brain lesion causing Aphasia
  5. If the Aphasia is due to a brain tumor, surgery to remove the tumor affecting the language centre can treat Aphasia.
  6. For a person who’s got Aphasia due to a stroke, sessions with a speech-language specialist are very effective. The therapist teaches the patient ways to communicate using stuff that doesn’t involve speech.

He uses the following to help the patient communicate without words:

  1. Props
  2. Drawings and pictures
  3. Teaching patient to speak slowly and be calm when talking.

Treatment techniques
The speech therapist uses these two main techniques to tackle Aphasia:

  1. Substitute skill model: This uses a prop like a writing board to help with spoken language.
  2. Direct treatment model: This approach uses specific exercises to help patients
  3. Copy and recall therapy (CART): This approach uses repetition and recall of certain words during speech therapy.
  4. Visual communication therapy (VIC): This involves the use of index cards to represent various components of speech.

In addition, Aphasia patients are also trained in the use of hand gestures to aid in communication as a part of ‘Visual Action Therapy (VAT)’.

I am suffering from puberphonia from last 12 years. I can't control my voice for longer time. And I have to give lot of pressure while speaking. How can I cure it?

MD PHYSICIAN
General Physician, Delhi
Puberphonia is a rare disorder in which adolescent males undergo voice changes to a much lower pitch due to a sudden increase in the length and thickness of the vocal folds. The muscles directly alongside the larynx become too tight, which causes the patient to constantly speak in high sound. Causes Emotional stress, Delayed development of secondary sexual characteristics Psychogenic etc. The treatment include voice therapy by speech language pathologist including :Cough, Speech range masking, Glottal attack before a vowel, Relaxation techniques to relax the laryngeal musculature, Lowering of larynx to appropriate position. Larynx manipulation: Surgery,Type III phonosurgery can be done, which includes surgical shortening and relaxation of the vocal cords. You can consult a ENT specialist for the same.

You need to learn the" relaxation response" in times of stress and anxiety. This can be learnt in a step wise process only and with practice you can excel. Start with doing relaxation exercises like yoga and meditation. Also try breathing exercises for 15-20 minutes daily. Once you learn how to relax you will have to learn when to relax too. If you still find things difficult you might need help with some counselling and medications.

I started stammering since 7 the class. Now I am 24 years old. My biggest challenge is being audible and clear to people. It has created a big hindrance for me while communicating. I cannot talk normally , like others do, which has cost me my last job, as I was into customer service (voice). Please suggest me a permanent solution. I presume this is genetic , as my grand father also stammers .

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Stammering can be made lesser only and only by speech therapy. So you should take the help of a speech therapist. Also, i'd suggest you to visit a psychologist as confidence plays a great role in dealing with this problem. I'd suggest you to speak very slowly, word by word. People may make fun of this but believe me, slowly you'll get better at it. Hope your query is answered. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts. Wishing you good health.
