What happens to people with autism when they grow up?

Since autism is a spectrum and people have varying skill levels, future is not the same for all people with autism. A lot of children who are able to cope with mainstream school /college education go undiagnosed and are successful at jobs but may be considered quiet or reserved adults by their family, friends and colleagues.

Several adults on the spectrum who have been diagnosed, and been in a supportive environment in their childhood, have written books which have facilitated and enhanced the understanding of the condition. We have examples of people who are professionally very successful. Some have gone on to become famous authors and at least one has won a Nobel Prize. Some advocate and speak for themselves and for other people with autism in the community.

Some of those who are fully independent in their everyday life may find it difficult to sustain the demands of a job and work environment. Some are married and some choose not to.

Some of those who are married face difficulties in forming relationships with their spouses and carry out responsibilities that come with marriage and having a family, and may continue to need support of another person in planning and carrying out the activities in running a house.

As in every other condition, some people on the spectrum will always need support in life and may never be fully independent. As yet, in India, there are few schools which have an environment or the attitude to accommodate the special needs of people on the autism spectrum. Vocational centers and employment opportunities are even fewer.

For most parents struggling with getting services for their child with autism, one of the biggest worry is‘what after us?’ As yet, there are not enough and appropriate lifespan services for people with autism where they can lead a life of dignity and respect.

However, with support from people around them including the family, friends, neighbours and teachers all of them can lead a happy and meaningful life.

I am 33 years old, I have migraine problem, i am always getting headache, what I do?

migrane can be managed with lifestyle changes and medications, try muscle relaxation exercises. Relaxation may help ease the pain of a migraine headache. Get enough sleep, but don't oversleep. Get an adequate amount of sleep each night. It's best to go to bed and wake up at regular times, as well. Rest and relax. If possible, rest in a dark, quiet room when you feel a headache coming on. Place an ice pack wrapped in a cloth on the back of your neck and apply gentle pressure to painful areas on your scalp. It is very important keep a headache diary. Continue keeping your headache diary even after you see doctor. It will help you learn more about what triggers your migraines and what treatment is most effective. A dose of riboflavin in appropriate dose as prescribed by me, also may prevent migraines or reduce the frequency of headaches. Coenzyme q10 supplements may decrease the frequency of migraines, magnesium supplements may also be used to treat migraines do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

Hi, The hand is shaking due to anxiety. Seek psychiatric help immediately. The fastest way to relieve the symptom of shaking or tremor is to restore the carbon dioxide in your blood to its normal level. You can do this by breathing into your cupped hands so that you inhale carbon dioxide together with oxygen. You can even prevent the tremors or shaking associated with a panic attack. When you feel an attack coming concentrate on slow, deep and relaxed breathing. This will not only relieve the symptom of shaking but may avert an attack altogether. The shaking and tremors associated with anxiety may be due to an overstimulated nervous system. You can relieve these by avoiding stimulants like caffeine found in coffee, black tea, soft drinks and chocolate. Getting rid of the excess of stress hormones in your body can further help give your nerves a rest. Exercise is a great way of doing this and sometimes just moving the shaking hand or foot can help to relieve the tremor in it. Tremors or shaking are made worse by fatigue so a good night’s sleep is crucial. Being well rested will not only help with the tremors but will help you to cope better with anxiety. Try a soothing drink like chamomile tea or warm milk before bed time to help you sleep better. Meditation, deep breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation techniques are all ways in which you can reduce stress and combat anxiousness. If you are prone to shaking and it is worsened by anxiety wearing a heavy watch or a heavy bracelet can help to stabilize the tremors in your hands and make them less noticeable. Reduce Stress, Practice Relaxation Techniques and Get Enough Sleep, avoid alcohol or ciggerates.

Hello lybrate-user, Shaking of muscles after physical activity is due to fatigue or malnourishment. Maybe you are pushing yourself too hard. Your body doesn't have enough energy to perform. If you skipped a meal or didn't eat enough to fuel your muscles, your levels of glucose, or blood sugar, will be too low. In addition to trembling or shaking muscles, you might also have symptoms such as irritability, nervousness, dizziness, confusion and weakness. Eating a small snack that contains carbohydrates or sugar, such as peanut butter and crackers or a glass of orange juice, can help ease the shaking from hypoglycemia. Apart from that consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, alcohol withdrawal, caffeine or certain medications can lead to trembling and shaking, as can stress and anxiety.

Just to give you a brief background, my father is 72 years old and a diabetic and has Hepatitis C and previously suffered a Diabetic stroke 2 years and had resultant some brain damage from which he made an almost full recovery. He was hospitalized then for a about 2 months and he could recollect all before and after the hospital stay. Recently it was identified that he has some blood clots in his brain and a clot removal surgery was recommended by the local doctors who referred us to another hospital in a another city. The neurosurgeons there have advised that as it currently stands the surgery poses a high risk of post surgery hemorrhage and to compound the problem, he is now highly anaemic. The doctors have advised that he undertakes treatment with clot dissolving medication for a few weeks and then check response to before we go in for surgery due to the risk factors. My father is experiencing intermittent loss of coordination and feeling numb on one side arm and leg which lasts for sometime and then he normalizes. Please could you kindly advise what our next course of action should be. We would highly value your thoughts on this and recommendations. An urgently reply would be greatly appreciated.

Dear lybrate-user, the clot which is present in your father's brain is responsible for the sudden numbness & loss of co-ordination of one side. Due to clot the blood supply to a certain part of brain is being ceased as a result the numbness is occuring. However, this ceasation of blood flow does not last for a long time & the blood flow agains starts within a short period. As a result your father normalizes after some time. Along with the medicines which your father are taking you can also give him homoeopathic mother tincture gingko bilova q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water.

From what you have described, it is likely your father is suffering from a condition called REM behaviour disorder, a sleep disorder in which a person enacts out their dreams. Since it may be associated with underlying neurological conditions, he needs to be examined in detail by a neurologist and evaluated. He may require a sleep study also.
