Composite Veneer Vs Porcelain Veneer

BDS, FICOI, MDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Composite Veneer Vs Porcelain Veneer

Negatively altered tooth shape or color affects not just the aesthetics, but also the person’s social image and self confidence. It can convert them into introverts who shy away from socialization. Teeth can lose their shape or color due to various reasons from hypo mineralized teeth, to food/tobacco stains, to fractures, trauma or tooth decay. If you are looking for a brilliant white smile with the perfect shape and alignment then veneers have the inherent ability of correcting all minor dental flaws creating a near perfect result.

A Veneer like its namesake is a thin perfectly shaped extension of tooth colored material which maybe composite , ceramic or a combination of the two. While composite resin veneers are fabricated over the affected tooth in a single sitting, the porcelain veneer requires taking impressions and the veneers are fabricated in the lab, which are then fixed on the tooth.

Veneers also help correct minor discolorations and mildly mishapen teeth. The choice of using composite or porcelain depends on a number of factors. Composite resin has a big advantage of reversibility. If the end result is not very satisfactory, then the entire restoration can be removed and a new veneer can be applied. With porcelains, the biggest advantage is their excellent resistance to staining. Even with long term use of coffee and tea, the chances of staining the porcelain veneers would be minimal.

Some of the properties of composite include:

  1. Requires less tooth reduction than a porcelain, thereby saving more natural tooth structure
  2. The material is extremely plastic and resinous, allowing sufficient working time for the dentist to achieve the desired shape and size of the veneer
  3. It is slightly porous and therefore, has a tendency to absorb water over a period of time and take in some stain
  4. Should be polished extremely well to achieve the natural looks
  5. May require replacement after about 3 to 5 years
  6. Can be done in one dental clinic visit

Some of the unique characteristics of porcelain include:

  1. The result of a well-done porcelain veneer produces an extremely natural looking tooth
  2. The best advantage of porcelain is that it is not porous and therefore once it is glazed, does not stain over a period of time. The typical discoloration around the edges of the veneers seen in composite restorations is not seen with porcelain veneers
  3. These veneers therefore last longer than the composite resin veneers
  4. They are more expensive compared to the composite resin veneers.
  5. They require at least 2-3 dental visits

The choice of the material for veneer and the result would depend ultimately on the patient’s aesthetic requirements and overall oral health maintenance. Having a detailed discussion with the dentist will help in choosing the right material and getting the maximum benefit out of it. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dentist and ask a free question.

Kindly get scaling done and use mouth wash twice daily for 15 days. Also notice that you are not constipated most of the times as this is also one of the reasons for bad breath. Brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique.

Adult teeth have a slight yellowish tinge, go for professional cleaning of teeth, this will remove any stains and calculus on the teeth which might be making teeth more yellow. If you are not satisfied with the shade of your teeth after professional cleaning, go for bleaching.

Benefits of essential oil for healthy teeth and gums.

Benefits of essential oil for healthy teeth and gums.

Essential oils for healthy teeth and gums

Essential oils are fantastic for helping to keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong. I'm using dreaming earth's germ buster blend for my oral hygiene routine because it contains so many healing essential oils for healthy teeth and gums, all in one go. I am almost three weeks into my natural dental health 'experiment' (see previous post). I can report that my mouth continues to feel much cleaner. My teeth and gums feel stronger. Maybe it's just my imagination, but my skin feels softer, too. These are hardly scientific findings, but they are enough for me to want to continue on. I'll keep you posted on my experience with oil pulling and natural toothpaste in future posts. If you are interested in making your own toothpaste or mouthwash, here are some ideas.

Which essential oils are best for healthy teeth and gums?

Peppermint and spearmint essential oils are both antiseptic oils which help to treat pain. They are great in a mouthwash or toothpaste, which is why they are such prevalent flavors in oral hygiene products. Peppermint and spearmint oils are also very effective in combating bad breath.

Clove oil is one of my favorite essential oils for healthy teeth and gums. It helps fight germs and, like peppermint numbs pain and fights bad breath. Because clove is so intense, make sure to dilute it well before using.

Rosemary essential oil is a good disinfectant and takes care of mouth odor. Plus, it tastes good!

When it comes to a great all-purpose oral health oil, reach for manuka or tea tree essential oil. For oral hygiene, these are both invaluable - helping to fight germs, heal cold sores and kill bad breath.

Myrrh oil is very good for oral hygiene in that it strengthens gums, and has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.

Eucalyptus essential oil is a germicide that has been reported to fight plaque build-up, gingivitis and prevent cavities!

Lemon

Lemon essential oil is antiseptic, strengthens gums and helps to whiten teeth.

Cinnamon essential oil is good for bad breath and has pain-killing properties.

How to use these? the nice thing is you can mix and match with what you have on hand, experimenting until you get a flavor you like. I like the following healthy mouth blend:

10 drops peppermint, 5 drops spearmint, 5 drops cinnamon, 5 drops clove, 5 drops tea tree or manuka, 5 drops lemon essential oils. Blend these together, and add to 8 oz of water. I'd recommend adding a few drops of carrier oil (such as almond or jojoba) to the water to help disperse the essential oils. If you use just water you'll need to shake well each time before using. After brushing, add a few drops to your toothbrush and gently brush teeth and gums. Rinse and spit - do not swallow! or, use as a mouth rinse after brushing. You can adjust the strength to your taste by making the essential oil concentration stronger or more diluted. Also, see our last blog posting on natural homemade oral hygiene products for some simple recipes.

Lastly, if you want to keep it simple, try our germ buster blend - it already combines many of these essential oils to great effect. It tastes good and leaves my mouth feeling super clean all day long. Here's to a fresh, clean, healthy mouth!

A coated tongue is unlikely to be the cause of improper speech. The simultaneous presence of both problems could be a mere coincidence. Please get yourself checked properly to pinpoint the real cause and treat it subsequently.

Is it possible after a tooth extraction the germs or bacteria still remains in the mouth & can cause problems?

Is it possible after a tooth extraction the germs or bacteria still remains in the mouth & can cause problems?
Hi. As the cavity or tooth decay is heavily influenced by lifestyle, what we eat, how well we take care of our teeth, the presence of fluoride in our water and toothpaste. Heredity also plays a role in how susceptible your teeth may be to decay. So, there are chances of getting cavity again!

I brush my teeth every day and night. But still I have a cavity and removed teeth and put the cap. Y.
Brushing two times doesnot stop cavitation in tooth totally. Rinse your mouth with water after food, try to avoid eating junk foods in daytime n before sleeping. Use mouth wash. There are many reasons for cavitation like food lodgement, oral hygiene practice, tooth n saliva composition, type of bacteria and their virulence capacity, hereditary and so on. Visit dentist every 6 months for dental check up.
