Enamel Loss: What It Is and How to Fix It?

Enamel Loss: What It Is and How to Fix It?

Enamel loss is nothing but tooth enamel erosion and this is quite a pathetic kind of oral condition. If the eroded enamel does not get restored, then your oral condition will get deteriorated to a great extent.
Teeth enamel plays the most important role in protecting teeth and if this layer gets eroded, then your teeth will get heavily damaged. Your teeth will not only get eroded, but the real dental color will also get changed.

Why enamel erosion occurs?

  1. Drinking excessive hot or cold: Your enamel is very much sensitive to hot or cold food items and as a result of which email loss is invited.
  2. Having fruit drinks: Citric acid in the fruit drinks is the element that can cause enamel erosion.
  3. Sugary diet: Excessive sugary diet is the very prominent cause of this kind of dental condition and thus you should take more and more of non-sugary foods.
  4. Environmental factors: There are many environmental factors that are responsible for enamel loss, and they are corrosion, stress, tear, wear, friction and others.
  5. Medications: Few medications are there that can cause enamel erosion and these medicines are antihistamines, aspirin and many more.
  6. Gastrointestinal troubles: These kinds of troubles are prone to the frequent erosion of tooth enamel and thus these problems need to be resolved as soon as possible.

What are the leading treatments for restoring enamel loss?

  1. Using fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash: There are many talented dentists who are strongly recommending the usage of both fluoride mouthwash and toothpaste so that tooth decay can be easily prevented. These products are now commercially available over-the-counter.
  2. Routine dental check-up: Daily dental check-up is needed so that oral condition can be checked so that the causes and signs of enamel loss can be detected, and then only perfect treatments can be easily applied.
  3. Taking vitamin-D supplements: there are many drugs and supplements that are enriched with vitamin-D, and they can be taken on a regular basis so that decayed enamel can be easily restored in a safe manner. Coconut oil can be taken in addition to these supplements for getting greater oral benefits.
  4. Cosmetic restoration options: There are many enamel-restoration options that can be cosmetically performed. Some of the popular options are crowning, filling, and others. On the other hand, leading a healthy lifestyle is also very important in this regard.

Hi lybrate-user, There should not be any problem if the complete tooth has been done. But there may be a chance of dry socket which may have formed due to blood clot dislodgement after extraction. Do not take any antibiotics only take painkillers. It will resolve in 15-20 days.

I have a bad breathe always. Brush my teeth for 3 times a day. What should I do to avoid this bad breathe. Thank you.

Post-Graduate Certificate in Endodontics
Dentist, Cuttack
I have a bad breathe always. Brush my teeth for 3 times a day. What should I do to avoid this bad breathe. Thank you.
Brushing is advised only twice a day. Overbrushing might destroy your enamel and cause sensitivity. Bad breathe has several reasons. It can be because of deposits or food particles remain inbetween your teeth. Or it can be due to medical conditions like gastric reflux, diabetes, lung infection, sinusitis or medications for chest pain and all. So before treating the problem, we have to know the cause so that we can eradicate it from roots. For time being use mouthwash and go for a dental check up soon to get the treatment.

Kindly get scaling done and use mouth wash twice daily for 15 days. Brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique to maintain your oral hygiene. Also notice that you are not constipated most of the times as this is also one of the reasons for bad breath. More than the toothpaste it is the correct brushing technique which is important.

a mouth ulcer that does not heal within 2 or 3 weeks should be examined by a health care professional like a dentist, oral physician, oral surgeon/ maxillofacial surgeon). following special investigations may be involved: blood tests (vitamin deficiency, anemia, leukemia, Epstein-Barr virus, HIV infection, diabetes) microbiological swabs (infection), or urinalysis (diabetes) . A biopsy (minor procedure to cut out a small sample of the ulcer to look at under a microscope) , to rule out cancer, but also if a systemic disease is suspected. Ulcers caused by local trauma are painful to touch and sore.

If the different angulation of erupting third molar allows food to stagnant there, then you should plan extraction of the tooth as per you comfort. But if the tooth is not causing any harm, easy to clean then there is no hurry for removal.

Why Milk Teeth Are Important

Why Milk Teeth Are Important

One of the landmarks of a child's development during the first year is the eruption of the little white pearls. The first tooth breaks into the mouth, somewhere between six months to one year of life. The entire set is in place in a baby's mouth by about 20 months of life. Though called deciduous teeth as they fall off after a certain period of time, the last of the milk teeth remains in the mouth up to 12 to 14 years of age.

Listed below are some points outlining the significance of milk teeth. It assumes importance, given that many a times, parents ignore injury and/or decay to these with the assumption that these are anyways temporary and a new set will be in place later.

  1. Eating: One of the primary functions of the milk teeth is to aid in chewing or mastication and digestion. Though not as strong as their permanent counterpart, they do play a great role in chewing and digesting the food. Children with malfunctioning teeth, especially molars, (missing or decayed) can result into poor nutrition.
  2. Speech development: The milk teeth play a critical role in the speech development, and speech abnormalities can be seen in people,  who do not have an effective set of milk teeth. It is common to see children in whom the front teeth in the milk set are not properly positioned, there could be speech problems like lisping.
  3. Aesthetics: Needless to say, a good set of white, pearly teeth adds to the beauty of a child's smile. This plays a major role in boosting the child's social behavior including acceptance and confidence levels.
  4. Space Maintenance: The milk teeth maintain and preserve the space required for their successors. In case where a lost tooth is not replaced, the space may not be sufficient for the permanent one to erupt, and this may even stop the permanent one from erupting. The result could be a blank space where the milk tooth is lost without the successor erupting into the mouth due to lack of space.

Given the above reasons, it is very important to take good care of the primary or milk or deciduous teeth. Some simple things to do would be:

  1. Enforce a regular oral hygiene routine including rinsing after each meal or snack, brushing twice a day, flossing and use of mouthwash
  2. A biannual visit to the dentist for oral prophylaxis regular cleaning followed by fluoride paste application if required; this will also reduce the onset of dental caries. Early caries can be identified during these visits   and treated before onset of pain.
  3. Chemical sealants may be used if the pits on the teeth are deep and can get decayed easily.

Visit your dentist regularly to know more and to maintain these pearls.

No Brushing Off: 5 Common Brushing Mistakes You Make Daily

Dentist, Udaipur
No Brushing Off: 5 Common Brushing Mistakes You Make Daily

While you might think that you are on track by brushing twice a day, but just doing that may not be enough. If your technique is not right or if you are using the wrong type of toothbrush, you are making your teeth vulnerable to infections and decay.

Here are the common brushing mistakes that can harm your teeth:

1. You do not brush long enough

The single most common mistake that people make while brushing is not brushing long enough. If you want to thoroughly clean your teeth, you should brush for almost 2 minutes. Experts suggest that most of the people with gum diseases did not brush their teeth for sufficient amount of time. Try using an electric toothbrush with a timer to ensure that you brush for 2 minutes.

2. You miss the important sites

Missing important areas of your mouth while brushing your teeth is also a common brushing mistake. Brushing should involve devoting an equal amount of time to all areas, targeting the inside, outside and chewing surfaces of your teeth, along with your gums, tongue and the roof of your mouth. Most people do not think consciously while brushing, making it easy to skip the vulnerable sites.

3. You use too much of paste

Using too much of toothpaste will not make your teeth cleaner. On the contrary, it might make you brush for a shorter span since too much of foam in your mouth can make you uncomfortable. For children, a small swipe on a toothbrush is enough and for adults, a pea-sized or marble-sized amount is more than sufficient.

4. You brush too hard

You may think that the more pressure you apply while brushing, the better it is. But that is not the case. Aggressive brushing can actually cause the gum tissue to come away from your teeth, leading to swollen gums and even bleeding. It can also result in tooth sensitivity or even loose teeth. Experts recommend that you should use a soft bristled toothbrush. Soft bristles tend to be gentle on your teeth and will flex more under the gum line, which leads to a more thorough cleaning.

5. Your technique is wrong

Brushing your teeth is not a race that you need to finish in time. By taking long, crude and haphazard sweeps back and forth, you are only going to harm your teeth. Concentrate instead on small areas at a time and brush gently in a circular motion. When you are at the gum line, remember to keep your bristles at an angle of 45 degrees and always brush away from the gums.

So, it is high time you change these brushing habits and adopt healthy dental practices for plaque free and healthy gums and teeth. Stay healthy, stay happy!

I have very serious problem of teeth I am 23 years old
Gums are leaving the teeth. Blooding from the teeth. please help.
- use a soft toothbrush -- and brush properly! brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and after meals. Hard brushing can further damage the soft tissues of your mouth. - floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to remove more plaque. - control bleeding by applying pressure to the area with a cold compress. - rinse with salt water or hydrogen peroxide to keep the area clean. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol, which can dry out your mouth. - stay away from smoking and other tobacco products, which can aggravate bleeding gums. - eat a balanced diet and limit snacking between meals. Carbohydrates and sugars feed dental plaque. - try an oral irrigation device, commonly known as a" water pick, to clear debris from around the gum line. - you may need deep cleaning along with surgical curettage or gum strengthening procedure. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser.

I did scaling two weeks ago now my front lower teeth gets tingling for past 3 or 4 days.

BDS
Dentist, Surat
I did scaling two weeks ago now my front lower teeth gets tingling for past 3 or 4 days.
It's a normal thing to happen after scaling! but doesn't mean scaling shouldn't be done. The reason why it happens is during scaling the tooth is exposed to high level of vibration and ultrasonic sound, which disrupts pulp all response temporarily. Moreover when the calculus is removed from the tooth, it exposes the tooth surfaces of root portion naked, which are normally covered by gums but in person with calculus there would be calculus between the tooth surface and gums. Eventually when the gum heals and reattaches to the tooth surface, sensitivity/tingling goes away. From person to person the time varies between a week to 2 week with maximum time of a month. Meanwhile you can use any desensitization toothpaste to relieve the tingling.

Hello! bad smell from mouth could be because of deposits on your teeth or food lodged between your teeth. Brush your teeth twice daily, floss regularly and rinse after every meal. If it still persists, visit your doctor to get scaling and polishing done.
