Take diet for hypothyroidism:- high-carbohydrate foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta and bread, Nutrient-rich foods that improve your health may also benefit your thyroid gland, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables more plenty of water: Blueberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, and other foods rich in antioxidants can improve overall health and benefit the thyroid gland. Eating foods high in B vitamins, like whole grains, may also help. flax oil, Selenium: Tiny amounts of selenium are needed for enzymes that make thyroid hormones to work properly. Eating selenium-rich foods, such as sunflower seeds or Brazil nuts, can be beneficial. Tyrosine: This amino acid is used by the thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4. Taking a supplement may help, Avoid few foods in hypothroidism i.e. caffeine products tea, coffee, tabcco, alcohol / wine , kale, broccoli, spinach, mustard green, cabbage, turnip, millet, cassava, linseeds, pine nuts, soy products as soy milk, tofu, soybeans, soy souce, also avoid stress. When my wife was pregnant thyroid test result got positive. After 2 months it get abortion. Now she is normal. How to detect thyroid? What are the symptoms of it?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. Lybrate-user, it is better to get thyroid assay done as soon as pregnancy is test becomes positive. If tsh level is above 4 - 5 milli unit, then, immediate treatment with appropriate dose of thyroxine should be started. Tsh levels should be maintained between 0.2 to 2.5 milli units through out the pregnancy. This will prevent adverse outcomes of pregnancy.

Diabetes.
What is diabetes?
It means that insulin secretion from pancreas is missing or is reduced.
insulin is there but is less effective, ultimately leading to increase in blood sugar levels.

Lybrate-user with the limited amount of information provided it appears you are a hypothyroid. It could had been better had you explained when the condition was first diagnosed and are you on any medicine or not. With this test report it is clear that you are hypothyroid and your antibodies are positive. Do not run after how high or high low the levels are. Interpretation is on the basis of either you are positive or negative. Hope this solves your query.

Ideal sugar level during pregnancy should be maintained between 90 - 120 mg through out the day. Hence, 135 mg after food is high. Is she on any treatment? if not then she must start on minimal dosage of insulin (4 - 6 units a day) and bring the levels below 120 mg. In pregnancy high sugar is dangerous for the fetus as it may trigger macrosomia (large baby).

What is the problem in flue and what causes hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
What is the problem in flue and what causes hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment?
Mr. Lybrate-user, influenza (flu), is a self limiting viral infection of upper respiratory tract. It can cause fever, (some times high fever) severe body ache including low back pain and joint pains, upper respiratory symptoms like running nose, sore throat and cough. There is hardly any sputum. Disease runs a short course of 4 to 5 days. But recovery is slow. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder of thyroid gland where there are antibodise produced against thyroid peroxidase enzyme (anti tpo ab). These antibodies destroy thyroxine producing cells in the gland that results in thyroxine deficiency - hypothyroidism. The gland is filled with lymphocytes and may look globular and firm. One of the cause is said to be excess iodine intake through iodinated salt. Treatment is to start thyroxine tablets and take them for life time. This is the commonest cause of hypothyroidism in usa.

Hello dear High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style .do meditation, yoga, Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take plenty of water in day time. Diabetes in Pregnant women

Diabetes in Pregnant women

The incidence of gestational diabetes is on the rise. At present 10 to 17 percent of pregnant women are developing diabetes during pregnancy. The chances of this are more if the woman is obese or if she had gestational diabetes in her previous pregnancy or a big baby earlier or if there is a family history mother father or siblings of diabetes.

This can be prevented to a great extent if a woman has a healthy lifestyle. Exercising regularly and maintaining body weight before and during pregnancy will minimise the risks of having diabetes in pregnancy.

My father who is about 55 age suffering with diabetes. So please tell what to do to help him ?

My father who is about 55 age suffering with diabetes. So please tell what to do to help him ?
Consult a senior and experienced doctor who treat such cases. A diabetologist / endocrinologist is the first preference. Follow his advices. Weight control, regular exercise, dietary (calorie) management, required medicine and regular monitoring for earliest sign of any complication and followup is essential part of management of diabetes. So please do not take it lightly. Do not run after hearsays and un authenticated advices.

Mr. Lybrate-user, looking at your height and weight, you have grade 2 obesity with a bmi of 37.5 kg/m2. With this kind of weight, controlling blood sugar is very difficult. If diabetes is in control then fasting should be near 100 mg and pp 150 to 160 mg/100 ml and hba1c%<7. If you have these levels then it is god. The lesions mentioned look like skin tags, a sign of resistance to insulin as well as are seen in obesity. These are harmless lesions. Can be removed by various methods like cuterisation, cryo surgery or excision.

How To Take Your Thyroid Medication
===============================
If you want to make sure that you are taking your thyroid medication properly, here are some guidelines to help.

Always check the prescription against what you receive. Don't allow generic substitutions.
Most doctors feel that taking thyroid hormone on an empty stomach allows for maximum absorption.
Many practitioners advise that you allow at least one hour before eating, because it allows for maximum absorption.
Be consistent about a high-fiber diet. If you start or stop eating high-fiber, get your thyroid rechecked, because it may change your absorption.
Many experts recommend you take vitamins or supplements with iron at least two to three hours apart from thyroid hormone. Iron can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption if taken too close together.
Be careful about taking calcium and calcium-fortified orange juice at the same time as thyroid hormone. Allow at least 2-3 hours apart, so absorption is not affected.
Don't take antacids within two hours of thyroid hormone. Allow at least 2-3 hours apart, so absorption is not affected.
Watch for interactions with antidepressants & thyroid hormone. Zoloft, Paxil and Prozac can make thyroid meds more or less effective. Talk to your doctor.
Don't stop taking thyroid hormone when you're pregnant or breastfeeding. It's necessary for you and your baby's health. Talk to your doctor about adjusting to the right dosage.

A tsh level of 7 milli units is a subclinical hypothyroidism. So normally there is no treatment required. Only when tsh level goes over 10 milli units/ ml treatment is advocated. But sometime even at a lower level of tsh like yours, if t4 level is low, if there are any troublesome symptoms of hypothyroidism then treatment si given.
