I have a high Tsh level with normal T3 and t4 levels. 3 tests at 3 month intervals gave 19.32, 22.03, 11.57. The doctor suggested me to use thyronorm 25mg tabs. Do I need to use these for life long or are these ranges normal, for past 1 years I have gained around 8 kgs of weight. Is this related to my thyroid problem.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

Please give current tsh and t3, t4 levels. If you have gained weight, means there is presence of hypothyroidism. To confirm whether there is hypothyroidism or not please give current test results.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. The levels mentioned are fine, only TSH is marginally high. This is called as sub-clinical hypothyroidism. There is no treatment recommended in this situation. However, if there are any troublesome symptoms then treatment can be considered. Thanks.

Hello, fot the bp you have to take salt restricted diet and walking for an hour every day. According to the reports you have shown is you have dystriglyceridemia for which you have to stop taking red meat, refined oil, daily walking for an hour. Repeat serum fastin lipid profile again after 1month if same levels you have to take medicines for it. And slightly increase in tsh levels may be due to age, diseases or because of some medicines.

This will considerably improve your metabolic activity and helps reducing your weight. 3- Split your meals and eating in moderate amount:-Spliting your meals into 3-4 times per day (including snacks)and eating in fair and consistent amount , improves ur metabolic rate as the food u take is not concentrated at one time. 4- No long Gaps and skipping of meals:-There should be no long gaps between meals.Never miss out breakfast. 5- No overeating:-Never eat in a bulk on one time .Try to have moderate amount of food each time u eat.It will help maintain your blood sugar at a healthy level and wont let it to fluctuate.Remember to eat your food slowly, chew well. 6- Proper Exercise and work outs:-Exercise is very important and a fast way to trim down calories ,extra weight and controlling glucose level.Brisk walking for 30 min.atleast five times a week is the best and easiest way of excersicing. You can also try Cycling, swimming, dancing.Timings for exercise should be fixed and regular.Avoid heavy exercise.Do not eat right away after a workout . 7-constant and regular timings for medication 8-Avoid fried foods and meat:Limit fats and sweets.Rather choose a variety of foods including whole grains, fresh vegetables, salads, fruits, low fat dairy products. 9- Take high-fiber and complex carbohydrates:-as they are easily broken down to basic sugars. Mr. Lybrate-user, usually a minimum of 30 minutes a day of physical activity is recommended to keep fit and prevent adding additional weight. So the amount of exercise being done by you (cycling) appears to be good enough. But still if you walk for another 20 minutes a day, that will add to keep fit as well as remain free from diabetes. Thanks for the question.

My father is 43 years old. He have high sugar. Since 1 year. To decrease what shall I do.
To give any advise I should get some more information like - fasting and pp sugar levels, hba1c%, weight and height and level of physical activity daily and dietary habits. Since he has confirmed diabetes, treatment with anti diabetic drugs shoul be started immediately. In addition he should exercise for more than 1 h every day. He should avoid sweets, direct sugar, deep fried foods and fruits like mango, banana, chikkoos, and grapes. Try and maintain his weight near normal for his height. (ideal body weight = height in cms - 100 x 0.9 = kgs). Consume more green vegetables, salads and complex carbs. If you want any specific advise please come in a private conversation with all the details.

Mr. lybrate-user, With hypertension some times there can be pedal (lower limb) edema. Some times certain medications can also produce the swelling. Keeping BP 120 - 130 / 70 to 80 mmHg is good. Plus restricted salt intake and exercise will help in remaining free from it. Thanks.

Diabetes is a condition where your body is starving and the energy from foods is not reaching the cells. For a diabetic it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the sugar levels, lifestyle and history. Though you can follow some guidelines - have small frequent meals. Do not fast for more than 2-3 hours. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery or sugar. Avoid junk foods. Exercise and stay active. Do not attempt to try out too many remedies as you could go into hypoglycaemia. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline.

There is no need for any medicine you must time yourself for going to the washroom it might have become a compulsive habit for you use the washroom initially every two hrs before watch and slowly increase the time gap if your investigations show everything normal then you sure can manage it on your own.

Hi as long as sugar levels are within limits then its ok, how ever your father's post food sugar levels are very high. He has to have strict control on diet and do meticulous walking/exercise to keep the sugar levels in control. He can try this for 2 months and recheck the sugar levels and hba1c values. If they are normal continue the above advice, if not consult the doctor who can treat diabetes. Wish your father good health
