I am 20 year old, I'm feeling difficult in speaking I stutter a lot, problem is from childhood, I feel more stuttering in public Please Help me to over come from this problem talk properly.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Stammering can be made lesser only and only by Speech therapy. So you should take the help of a speech therapist. Also, I'd suggest you to visit a Psychologist as confidence plays a great role in dealing with this problem. I'd suggest you to speak very slowly, word by word. People may make fun of this but believe me, slowly you'll get better at it. Hope your query is answered. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts. Wishing you good health.

Hi, I want to ask that is there any pills or drugs treatment for stammering. My brother try many suggestion but he has no change in stammering. Please suggest some. Thanks.

MASLP
Speech Therapist, Mohali
Hi unfortunately stammering has no medicinal treatment. However if your brother takes proper speech therapy from a qualified speech therapist then his problem can surely be solved. Speech therapy will involve air flow management techniques, proper breathing patterns, language and fluency techniques, a combination ofvvthese can help any chronic stutterer also. Good luck! you can consult me in private with details of the onset and course of your brothers stammering so that I can guide you better.

MD - Psychiatry

Vocal nodule unless it becomes hardened can be made to resolve by voice rest and preventing voice abuse. Are you a singer. Since vocal chords are a sensitive area, better get 2nd opinion before proceeding to surgery. All the best.

I am facing problem from 3-4 years of stammering problem. I am a student. I can't read properly.

M.Sc - Applied Psychology, MS - Counselling and Psychotherapy
Psychologist,
Hello lybrate user, I believe every person who stutters is slightly different. From the top, we would all look same but if you dive deeper you would know everyone is different with respect to syllables on which they stutter, frequency, places they might stutter, may stutter while talking to specific people etc. So you need to analyse your stuttering with respect to above points so you can work to reduce it with greater efficiency. Here are the things which is useful: 1. Breathing: this has been already stressed enough by other people. Notice your breathing pattern when you stammer. You will notice that you breath shallow while stammering and try to complete sentence as soon as possible which leads to more stuttering. Taking control of your breathing can do wonders. Breath deep and talk slowly. 2. Substitution: when you make note of syllables/words on which you stammer, you can substitute those with their synonyms on which you don't stutter. Another trick is inserting things like'umm'you know'i feel' etc when you feel that you are about to stammer. 3. Mirror technique: this helped me a lot. Shut the door, stand alone in front of a mirror, start reading any small article/chapter loudly for around 20 mins from a magazine/ newspaper which you haven't read before. When you are done with reading that, look in the mirror and try to talk about it loudly. Try it for 30 days and see if you can feel the difference. 4. Acceptance: accept the fact that there are millions like you. Don't try to hide it or run away from it. Accept it as a part of you and try to live with it. Thank you. Try to consult any speech therapist too.

I am 28 year old professionally a software engineer I feel that I procrastinate things ,become confuse with spellings while writing. Finds difficulty in continuously speaking and prompt answering. Rate of thought generations seems slow to me as I compared myself with few other people. My attentions wanders from recent tasks and so I take more time for doing things. Overall it reduces my performance at my work place and I have been asked for performance improvement previously at my work place .How I should control and reduce it to improve my performance . Also I want to improve the way of doing things I closely observed successful people from IITS and NITS , and I want to change my living style as like them. Can study of NLP (Neural linguistic programming ) help me ?Please help. I Want to achieve my dreams.

M.S. Counselling and Psychotherapy
Psychologist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate user, it is excellent to have a dream and it is wonderful to make sincere efforts to achieve the dream. It is also very important to have rational expectations, so that the goal is achievable. Hence, don't look at iitians and nitians. Focus on your dream and understand what skills will be required to achieve that dream, make a systematic plan, have a detailed schedule for each month/week/day and try to do things as per the schedule. Remember that what you do today is going to affect your future. So you will have to make conscious efforts to get rid of your habit of procasination. You probably are under stress and have fatigue. Try to take healthy diet, lots of water, do some exercise, and try to get at least 7 - 8 hours of sleep every day. Stop comparing yourself with others. Every person in this person is unique. There will always be many people who will be better than you and there will be many people who are not as good as yourself. So stop comparing. Always compare your current performance with your previous performance. Try to improve on that, learn new skills. Nlp would be helpful. You may also talk to a counsellor. Take care.

Hi this is for my Wife, since few months we noticed that sometimes while speaking, wrong words are pops out from her mouth e.g she want to say 'honey' and the word comes out as 'ghee' or 'thousand' comes out as hundred. It happens with words only not with sentences. Along with this recently she often complains about her headaches too. Please let me know if there is anything serious, what is a cause of it and what treatment should we go for?

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Well words popping out irrelevantly can be part of many problems. The first possibility is it can be due to hypothyroidism (most common) which occurs usually due to impairment in concentration. The second possibility is it can be a part of tic disorder usually vocal tics. The third possibility can be migraine headache with aura. The other most common possibility to think of is stress /depression which can also produce these symptoms. Since she is having headache my opinion is to consult both a neurologist/ psychiatrist. Neuro imaging maybe needed for her. She needs detailed clinical evaluation for a clear diagnosis to be made. Lastly don't worry in most clients we come across the problem is very mild and treatable. Your wife can be treated. Be relaxed and consult the specialist.

By hardening your voice you are doing vocal abuse. Harsh and hoarse voice happens because of vocal abuse. Consult ent specialist first he will guide you according whether you need to go for voice therapy or not. Take care.

My grandson is 20 month as of now he is not speaking nor responding doctors are predicting Autism can you suggest what to do.

M.Sc Applied Psychology, Advanced Diploma Child Guidance & Counselling
Psychologist, Delhi
Dear Lybrate user Please give proper stimulation and time to the child to grow and develop. It's too early to label a child as having autism. First get your grandson hearing test done, because if hearing is not appropriate then it could lead to language delay. Another thing is you can try giving him language exposure like labelling the door as door with the words marked over it. Recite rhymes to him, tell him bed time stories to him. Have patience, all the best.
