I am 37 year old. Had a history of gestational diabetes 7 years back when I was pregnant. No diabetes please after that. Just recently found out that fast level of sugar was 126 please and please was under normal range. Diet control and walk has brought my fasting level to 114. I want to ask if I plan for second child. I might put on weight. Will I get diabetes again. Can I prevent it ?

General Physician, Nellore
Yes you might get diabetes during 2nd pregnancy again. Continue the diet and exercise and have frequent sugar check ups during your pregnancy. It is not a contraindication for pregnancy. But note that the diagnosis of diabetes during pregnancy is slightly different. Even after delivery, you should continue checking every year even if sugars are normal. You are likely to develop diabetes on a permanent basis whether you have a 2nd pregnancy or not. The appearance of diabetes has nothing to do with gaining weight during pregnancy. It is a hormonal effect.

I am diabetics, hypothyroidism, blood pressure, cholesterol patients. All these are within control. What you suggest to eat regularly what type of food should be more in daily.

all this regular exercise for at least 1 h should also be, it is good to know that all the three conditions that you have are in control. To keep sugar in check you have to consume more complex carbs, avoid sweets, direct sugar and deep fried foods. Consume more green salads, green leafy vegetables, fruits like apple, orange, water melon, sweet lime, pear, guava, papaya and pomogranate (any one of these 1 - 2 servings in a day). Avoid red meat, egg yolk and pastry items. For hypothyroidism you should avoid soya and soya containing foods, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, mustard and coffee. For high blood pressure salt intake should be minimal. Avoid papad, pickles and extra salt at table. In addition daily at least 1 h exercise is to be maintained.

Thanks for the query. RBG of 160 mg is high. It points out that there is a problem. But to decide whether one has diabetes or not can only be decided by doing - Fasting, PP and HbA1c%. So please get these tests and then only a correct advise can be given. To confirm diabetes - FBG has to be 126 mg and above, PP 200 mg and above & HbA1c% 6.5 and above. So my suggestion is please get these tests at the earliest and come back with details. Thanks.

Hello, If the person has T1 diabetes, then the only treatment is taking Insulin injections for lifetime. There are no oral drugs available. The reason being in these persons there is No Insulin production by Beta ells of pancreas. Since Insulin is needed for glucose, protein and fat metabolism constantly, then it has to be supplemented every day from outside. So it is said in Type 1 DM Insulin is needed for treatment and for survival of the patient. Thanks.

One can take all this in moderation. Bowel movements may be affected in diabetes due to autonomic neuropathy. Ask him to consult doctor for the same.
