Do You Know Nightcaps (Drinking Alcohol Before Bed) Give You the Worst Sleep!

MD - Medicine, Diploma in Diabetology, MBBS
General Physician, Malda
Do You Know Nightcaps (Drinking Alcohol Before Bed) Give You the Worst Sleep!
"Nightcaps (Drinking alcohol before bed) give you the worst sleep ever!

Any alcoholic beverage (generally brandy, wine, beer, bourbon etc) consumed before bedtime is known as a nightcap. You may have a nightcap thinking you’ll get better sleep, but did you know that it’s actually responsible for giving you a disrupted sleep pattern? Nightcaps may gradually start interfering with your sleeping quality, causing you to wake up sooner than you want.

How do nightcaps adversely affect your sleeping pattern?

Recently, a study conducted by the University of Melbourne revealed the fact that alcohol before bedtime can give you the worst sleep ever. In this study, several volunteering adults were neurologically monitored in a lab for a few days. Half of them were asked to have nightcaps, while the other half was instructed to drink non-alcoholic beverages. After completing their observation, the researchers reached the conclusion that though alcohol resulted in greater number of sleeping hours, it left the participants feeling dehydrated and less refreshed in the morning due to fragmented sleep. This is because the sleep induced by nightcaps is very shallow, and having nightcaps regularly can result in less restorative sleep.

The side-effects of nightcaps

Ruining your sleep is not the only ill effect nightcaps have on your health. Nightcaps give rise to other issues too, like snoring and night sweats. Moreover, consuming alcohol before falling asleep also weakens your immune system, damages your memory, speeds up the ageing process, results in nightmares, and causes headaches and insomnia. In fact, regular nightcaps are bad for your heart too.

4 ways how you can prevent alcohol from affecting your sleep pattern

Nonetheless, if you want to include a bit of alcohol to your dinner, it can be done in the correct way to ensure that it doesn’t affect the quality of your sleep. You can follow these simple rules to minimise the ill effects of nightcaps:

1. Stick to the three hour rule: Ensure that you drink alcohol at least 3 hours prior to sleeping.

2. Limit yourself to a fixed amount: Always consume alcoholic beverages in moderation and try to limit yourself to only one or two drinks every day.

3. Sleep early: Try to avoid staying awake longer than you usually do as this adds up to alcohol’s abilities of disturbing your sleep.

4. Increase your water intake: Prevent your body from getting dehydrated by the effect of alcohol by consuming at least one glass of water for each glass of alcohol. Additionally, don’t forget to sip a few glasses of water after waking up in the morning.

Sleep is important for your overall well being, so try not to compromise with it by consuming nightcaps regularly, especially after knowing about its devastating effects.

Be slim with healthy food choices

M.Sc. in Foods & Nutrition, PhD in Foods & Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Udaipur
Be slim with healthy food choices

Choose your white foods carefully

  •     Avoid white rice, bread, pasta. These refined foods promote weight gain as they are digested quickly and cause your blood-sugar and insulin levels to spike.
  •     Making the switch to wholesome wholegrain varieties will help you maintain a healthy weight and keep you full for longer, as they are rich in fibre and help keep your blood-sugar levels balanced.
  •     Includes whole grain choices like whole oats, quinoa, brown rice, daliya, buckwheat, whole grain pasta and grainy bread add in your main meal.

Drink 2-3 litres of water a day

We often forget to keep our water intake up during winter, yet it is important to drink plenty of water all year round for good health. Don't forget air conditioning and heaters can be very dehydrating.

Try to drink at least two litres a day. Herbal teas count too.
There are many wonderful health-promoting teas to choose from such as ginger (great for improving circulation), green (a powerful antioxidant and can help promote weight loss), and chamomile (helps calm your nerves).

Eat protein with every meal

  •     One of the best ways to maintain a healthy weight is to eat good-quality, low-fat protein at each meal.
  •     Protein foods have a low gi and help to stabilise blood-sugar levels, which in turn will help curb sugar cravings and prevent you snacking on sugary carbohydrate foods.
  •     A good guide is to keep protein servings to the size and thickness of your palm. Some healthy protein choices include nuts, seeds, legumes (and legume-based foods such as hummus), egg white, fish, lean meat, chicken, low-fat dairy and soy products.
  •     Protein foods also help to create a feeling of fullness, preventing you from overeating.

Fill half your plate with fruit and veg salad

  •     At least half of your diet should be made up of fresh fruit and vegetables (including legumes).
  •     Fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of important vitamins and minerals including vitamins a and c, folate, iron and calcium.
  •     Purple, red and orange varieties are particularly high in potent health-promoting antioxidants.
  •     However, if you are watching your waistline, don't overdo higher-gi veggies such as potato, sweet potato and pumpkin.
  • Aim to have about three pieces of fruit a day. Try adding fruit to your porridge, and make stewed fruit have with muesli or natural yoghurt in the morning.

Start your dinner with soup

  •     Have a small bowl of low-calorie mix veg soup before your main meal to help manage your weight.
  •     Doing this is not only a great way to increase your vegetable intake, it can help reduce the amount of food and calories you consume in a meal.
  •     To save time, make a healthy vegetable-based soup at the beginning of the week and freeze portions.
  •     Don't forget to add immune-boosting ingredients such as garlic, ginger, onion and miso to help protect yourself from colds and flu.

I have an ovrian sist size 3.5 c. M. What is the best treatment for this?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, FMAS, DMAS, MBBS
Gynaecologist,
Hello, any ovarian cyst less than 4 cm can be treated with a 3 monthly course of low dose oral contraceptive pills and needs to be followed up with ultrasound for the size. If the cyst doesn't decrease in size then it can be removed by laparoscopy. Regards.

Pregnancy is calculated for the first day of last menses which was on 20th feb. So today you r carrying a pregnancy of (9 days of feb + 31 days of march + 4 days of april) = 44 days = 6weeks+2 days.

Is it safe (not getting pregnant) to have sex just before periods?

CCST, Accredation in Colposcopy, MRCOG, MD, DGO
Gynaecologist,
Yes it is okay provided you have very regular 28-30 day cycles. However still not 100% as ocassional delayed ovulation can still occur in the current cycle. Regular contraception is always best to avoid an unwanted pregnancy.

If tested very early before 6 weeks even usg can not detect the baby's heart beat. So repeat scan after 2 weeks if there are no problems in ghe meanwhile. If at that time also same findings are present it can suggest miscarriage, so continue medications and hope for the best, relax.

Ms. Lybrate-user, best time to conceive is between 10-15th day, if you are having regular menstrual cycle. But intercourse just after menstruation in order to conceive will of no use. Be little patient. Take healthy diet. Avoid too much stress. Do morning or evening walk. Make sure your digestive system is also healthy.
