When our digestive ability, or Agni, is strong, we create healthy tissues, eliminate waste products efficiently, and produce a subtle essence called Ojas. Ojas, which is a Sanskrit word that means strength, can be envisioned as the innermost vital essence. According to Ayurveda, Ojas is the basis for clarity of perception, physical strength, and immunity. On the other hand, if our Agni is weakened through improper eating, lack of activity, negative emotional energy or unhealthy daily routine, our digestion will be hampered and we produce toxins that get stored in the body. According to Ayurveda, this toxic residue, known as Ama, is the root cause of disease.

Whether we are coping with weight issues or uncomfortable GI symptoms such as bloating, gas, or indigestion, often the underlying root problem is weak Agni, or poor digestion. When a patient goes to a health care provider trained in conventional allopathic medicine, the treatment options for digestive issues are typically medications, which serve to control symptoms, but do not treat the underlying cause.

Even when a provider’s approach includes testing and the elimination of offending foods, this is still only addressing part of the problem. While this treatment addresses the agent (or food) being ingested, it doesn’t look at why it is not being digested properly. Although eliminating foods that are bothersome can often alleviate symptoms, it is often difficult for patients to continually avoid those foods. It can often begin to disrupt their quality of life.

The Ayurvedic concept of Agni allows us to expand the conversation into answering the most important questions: “Why did the body begin to improperly digest, or not tolerate, this food?” and “How can we both eliminate the offending agent and concurrently increase Agni or digestive power?” This approach opens up the possibility of re-introducing the food at a future time, allowing the person to fully experience foods again.

Ayurveda recommends a variety of practical techniques for keeping our digestive fire strong. Incorporating these practices into your daily life can strengthen Agni and, in turn, facilitate weight loss, improve the metabolism of food, and minimize uncomfortable GI symptoms.

Advices for you!

1. Meditate on a regular basis—welcome are increasingly confirming the genetic changes that occur with regular meditation, which can help restore the body’s homeostasis, including the processes controlling digestion. To achieve maximum benefit, meditate for 20 to 30 minutes, twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening.
2. Do some form of daily movement, whether it is a little yoga every morning, or a daily walk - a short 15-minute walk after each meal helped to control sugar spikes after eating. These short post-meal walks were more effective than taking a longer, 45-minute walk once daily.
3. Don’t overeat—When we eat more food than our stomach can accommodate, we cannot properly break it down. We also tend to produce more acid, thus causing reflux and indigestion. In addition, the amount of digestive enzymes produced may not be able to completely break down the volume of food ingested, which leads to more gas formation, discomfort, or bloating. Recommends that we leave one-third to one-quarter of our stomach empty to allow space for our body to easily digest our meal.

Here is a simple way to gauge an ideal portion of food for a meal based on your body size: Cup your hands together with your fingertips touching, forming the shape of a bowl. The recommended amount of food for a meal is the equivalent of two of these handfuls of food. Of course, you can eat less than two handfuls if your appetite is smaller.

Sip on ginger tea throughout the day, and with meals. Ginger is known as the “universal remedy” due to its many benefits for the body, and it has been used for more than 2,000 years to treat digestive issues. Ginger can relax the smooth muscle of the intestines, thereby relieving symptoms of gas and cramping.

Ginger stimulates digestion by speeding up the movement of food from the stomach into the small intestine, and helps eliminates digestive discomfort after eating. In addition, ginger can stimulate saliva, bile, and gastric enzymes to aid in digestion of the food that has been ingested (beneficial effects are a result of phenolic compounds, primarily gingerly and shoals, and various other volatile oils that are present in ginger).

Ginger tea is refreshing and easy to make. Just add one teaspoon of grated or sliced fresh ginger root to a cup of hot water. You can prepare a larger batch and keep it with you in a thermos bottle to sip throughout the day.

4. Eat your largest meal at lunchtime - our bodies are most able to digest food at midday, when we are active. Our digestive system secretes the highest concentration of “digestive juices” around noon, making this the best time to eat our largest meal. In the evening, our bodies are slowing down and preparing for sleep. If we eat our biggest meal at dinner, when our digestive fire is weaker, we will feel heavy and bloated and will be more likely to have difficulty falling asleep.
5. Focus on releasing negative emotions—you’ve no doubt noticed that your emotions influence your digestion. You may get heartburn when you’re under stress, lose your appetite when you feel sad, or become nauseated or even throw up before a big exam or presentation. The stress associated with unprocessed negative emotions can inhibit the natural digestive process and lead to chronic digestive issues.

As we now know, a complex, independent nervous system called the enteric nervous system (ENS) lines the gastrointestinal tract (contains many of the major neurotransmitters that are found in the brain, including serotonin, dopamine, glutamate, norepinephrine, and nitric oxide) - in fact, about 95% of the serotonin contained in the body at any given time is in the ENS.

This second brain controls our digestion and can work both independently and in conjunction with the brain in our head. Without getting bogged down in the details of this intricate system, we can briefly state that there is an intimate relationship between our brain and our gut, and our digestion responds to the thoughts and emotions.

When we experience a situation that we interpret as stressful, signals from the brain can alter nerve function between the stomach and oesophagus, resulting in heartburn. With extreme stress, the brain sends signals to the gut immune cells that release chemicals leading to inflammation. This inflammation can then lead to malabsorption and even food sensitivities if the stress becomes chronic. By learning how to manage stress and release emotional turbulence, we help our digestive tract to work naturally and efficiently.

Proper digestion, with a strong Agni, plays a central role in our physical and emotional wellbeing. As recognizes, we are not what we eat, but “we are what we digest.” By making choices that strengthen our digestive ability, we form the foundation for good health and vitality.

Need further information for suggesting better options. As of now for regulation of your periods, best is to take oral pills used for contraception for regulation of your periods, fulfuling the hormonal needs of the body and gives withdrawal bleeding after 25 - 27 days. Repeat the cycles for 3 months and allow the uterus to go into natural cycles so wait for some time and see. Basing onthe out come further advise is given. Good luck.

I given birth to baby girl 13 days back c section ,I didn't get milk after delivery, my paediatric given me dexlac, nw I am trying to brest feed her she latching fr more then an hour as my milk is low, does my baby get hurt by suckng fr long time for one n half hour ,does it effects on her cheek muscles?

20 minutes of breast feeding from each breast is ok. Don't feed for so long from one breast. But excess feeding does not harm. Take lots of milk, water, jeera, methi .will help milk formation. If your baby is passing adequate urine that means milk is sufficient to the baby. All breast fed babies need milk every 2-3 hrs.

Hi, my age is 22. I married in December. Since then my period is irregular. Sometime it takes more than 2 months to come. I am also planning a baby since last seven months. But not able to conceive yet. I consult with a doctor three times. Every time she advised me regestrone pills. After taking pills my period comes within 10 days. But with out pills my period takes 2.5 months. Dr. Also suggested me to lose weight. Due to this I am very depressed. Please advice.

Hi first treatment for your cycle regularisation is weight reduction only. You try to reduce 4-5 kg weight that will drastically improve your cycle there are hormonal pills for regularisation of cycle but I can't give as you are planning for pregnancy you should once do following test also pelvic usg s tsh s prolactin sometimes abnormalities in this hormones also cause cycle irregularities thanks.

I do weekly sex that is once in a week on monday & every time doing this I feel pain in vagina & this Monday even got bleeding. My white discharge is also normal. Bt sometimes in white discharge there's little redness of blood then why do I still feel pain & why bleeding happened?

If you are having regular monthly periods 12 to 14th day of your cycle is most likely your ovulation day. So from 11 th day of cycle to 18th day, having intercourse on alternate days will increase your likelihood of conceiving.

I am feed to my son about six months now my period is late for ten days. I have symptoms as like to previous cycle and I conduct two home tests and they are negatives. We can use condoms and I feed around three to four hours at day and night. Now what can I do ?

Home remedies include recording basal body temperature, signs like tender breasts, nausea, feeling sick etc are ways of detecting whether ones pregnant. But these are not at all specific to pregnancy hence not reliable. The only way is to watch out for a next scheduled period, is she gets it on time she is not pregnant. If she misses it she might be pregnant. In that case consult a gynecologist.

Unexpected Bleeding - Know the Reasons Behind it!

Unexpected or abnormal vaginal bleeding usually refers to the kind of bleeding that occurs any time outside of the normal time of menstruation. Also termed as spotting, inter-menstrual bleeding or metrorrhagia, bleeding between periods always calls for extra measures to be taken against it, and is a matter of serious concern. The primary causes for unexpected vaginal bleeding generally are:

  1. An imbalance of progesterone and estrogen levels triggered by a variety of causes like thyroid gland problems, dysfunctional ovaries and irregular doses of birth control pills, which may eventually lead to spotting. However, one must take note of the fact that hormonal contraceptives, in many cases, may cause abnormal bleeding for the first few months, after which it always subsides.
  2. Noncancerous growth such as uterine fibroids are also potential causes of spotting or abnormal bleeding.
  3. Miscarriages, ectopic pregnancy, and other kinds of complications involved during childbirth can cause abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  4. Infection of reproductive organs caused due to intercourse, vaginal douching, pelvic inflammatory disease, or STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) may lead to bleeding and inflammation.
  5. Cancer of the vagina, uterus, cervix, or ovaries, albeit extremely rare in nature, may cause abnormal bleeding of the vagina.

While in most cases, this type of bleeding is naturally corrected, some women might need to undergo treatments when the case is severe. Overlooking an otherwise minor issue might thrust you in the face of life-threatening circumstances, if it develops into a case of cancer, infection, or any other type of disorder.

‘Prevention’ of vaginal bleeding, as such, is indeed a narrow possibility and the measures will almost always vary since the factors that cause intermenstrual bleeding aren’t the same in all cases. However, what your doctor will always advise you in this regard will be to ensure that your diet is balanced, your weight under control and your lifestyle is essentially healthy. If you happen to be on birth control medications, be so while adhering to medical instructions. Resorting to taking aspirin doses often might also influence the incidence of such abnormal conditions. If your pain still persists after you experience unexpected bleeding, you must consult a doctor without any further delay.

Hello. Dr. Does RH negative blood group cause miscarriage or any other type of problem in pregnant lady?

If anti d injection was not given within 48 hours of previous delivery or miscarriage, future pregnancies do carry a risk of miscarriage. If woman gets pregnant, she should be monitored through indirect coombs test. If husband is rh negative there's no risk of a miscarriage.

Ideal for you is oral contraceptive pill if you have regular sex like novelon or femilon to be taken for 21 days in a monthly cycle from Day 2 of menses. Practising safe period is another solution for you but it is not full proof method and highly unreliable. If a women’s menstrual cycle varies from 26days to 31days cycle, The shortest cycle (26days) minus18days=8th day. The longest cycle (31days) minus 10days=21st day Thus, 8th to 21st day of each cycle counting from first day of menstrual period is considered as fertile period. That is UNSAFE PERIOD. Period other than this fertile period in a menstrual cycle is considered as SAFE PERIOD.

6. ब्रोकोली:
