I have gum problems. It burns which I eat spicy food or chillies. Of late, it bleeds with I brush. Gums and teeth pain with I eat hard food. Consulted dentist. He cleaned the teeth - that is scaling. Now he is advising me to get curretage through laser. He says gums are infected with bacteria and I should go through laser treatment. What to do? Is there any alternate treatment?

Hello Lybrate-user, sensitivity is sharp, shooting type of sensation in teeth on contact of extremely cold or hot food which usually lasts for a few seconds and disappears completely after that and re-occurs again on such stimulus. Treatment plan for sensitive teeth goes as follows: 1. You can use any commercially available desensitizing toothpastes such as colgate sensitive /sensodyne /Sensodent KF / Sensoform R/ Shy NM/ Vantej /Senquel F /Shy XT /Pepsodent pro sensitive (many more are available in market) as first line of treatment. If it reduces your sensitivity substantially you can continue brushing with toothpaste in long run to avoid further sensitivity. 2. If you don't get any relief from desensitizing toothpastes it indicates a more severe problem which will need further treatment like layering/coating the damaged tooth surface OR filling of the tooth if there is big cavity OR root canal treatment in extreme cases. Getting proper treatment leads to permanent relief in sensitivity problem. And you can eat and drink cold food items without getting jerks while eating or drinking. Regards

Three days back my baby hit me on my front tooth upon which I have undergone rootcanal 3 years back. Since yesterday I have severe pain in the root of that tooth and the adjacent tooth.(2-1 and 2-2) and one side of the face has swollen. Local dentists gave me antibiotics and pain killers. Is it the right procedure?

•If there is pain inside your root canal treated tooth, you may need re-root canal treatment or tooth extraction after proper investigations.

Also ask for polishing of teeth after scaling. Do warm saline rinses alternately with mouthwash everytime after meals.

Do you rinse yourmouth with an alchohol-free mouth wash after every meal? If no, then start doing it because it prevents the formation of bacteria in your mouth.

Wisdom teeth usually make their appearance between the ages of 17 and 21, though it's possible for them to push through earlier or later. Referred to as your "third molars," these four teeth begin to push through the skin like any other tooth, which can cause pain. However, wisdom teeth are much more likely to grow in at an incorrect angle – even sideways – causing impaction that can radiate this pain to the teeth in front of it

Pan mascara contains betel nut and causes serious oral disease. Quit this habit as early as possible to avoid further transformation. Go to a good dentist for proper investigation. You may have oral submucous fibrosis. Get the treatment accordingly.

- use a soft toothbrush -- and brush properly! brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and after meals. Hard brushing can further damage the soft tissues of your mouth. - floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to remove more plaque. - control bleeding by applying pressure to the area with a cold compress. - rinse with salt water or hydrogen peroxide to keep the area clean. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol, which can dry out your mouth. - stay away from smoking and other tobacco products, which can aggravate bleeding gums. - eat a balanced diet and limit snacking between meals. Carbohydrates and sugars feed dental plaque. - try an oral irrigation device, commonly known as a" water pick, to clear debris from around the gum line. - you may need deep cleaning along with surgical curettage or gum strengthening procedure. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser. You may consult me in person.
