I cannot focus in class I can rarely give my 100% attention to anything be it studying or gaming. I always keep losing focus. While in a group I start day dreaming even though others are talking. I am hyperactive there always needs to be something or the other in my hand to play with and when I cant find anything I play with people's earlobes. I have frequent headaches where my head feels very lazy it feels like I just want to keep my eyes closed. And when this happens I cannot figure out whats happening in my surroundings. This happens not only while studying, gaming but also while i'm driving because of which I have to apply sudden brakes. Please help me all of this is affecting my studies.

Dear, memory and mind power consists of understanding, storage and recollection of information you learn. Understanding depends on concentration. The more creative you are on doing tasks or reading, the more you understand. Storage and recollection depends on your understanding and how well you review what you have learned. Repetition and review of material learned and other tasks provides easy recollection. You can improve your concentration and total brain power with the help of green leafy vegetables, exercise, creative activities, number puzzles like sudoku etc. Hard work is the key to learning and recollection. Post a private question to me and I shall provide you more tips. Take care.

Sir I have a bad habit to eat (gutkha) tobacco. I want to quit it but I unable to do it. Please tell me what to do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
If it is Hans and gutkha products, they are both very dangerous. I am so glad that your intention is to quit these habits. There are no guarantees about stopping one’s addiction. But that does not mean we should not keep at it, over and over again until we succeed. Both are tobacco products and will therefore have addictive components to them. It may feel like you can’t stop but that it really not true. If you do not try, then it will never happen. You must try and try again until you succeed. The problem with addiction is that you have two products which are both conditioned to various events in your daily life and as such it will make it difficult but not impossible. You could work with an addiction counselor to help you process the rehabilitation. It is important to first find out about the ill-effects of tobacco use to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary and true. The nicotine in tobacco stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. Nicotine also reduces the erectile capacity of your penis to hamper satisfying sex. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. You need to replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the tobacco drive reduces, substantially. Both will help but I am inclined to favor the gum because it is an oral habit and it will occupy the mouth just as though you were still chewing tobacco. When you want it will be easier to give up the gum. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-users for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit consuming Hans. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

Sir. I have a habit of cigarette. I puff at least 6 cigarettes in a day. please give me the suggestions to leave that one. Thanks.

BHMS
Homeopath, Murshidabad
Dear lybrate user, you may need a bit of willpower to stop smoking permanently. You could easily abstain yourself from smoking during the initial 2-3 days. But after few days of abstaining from smoking you will feel a strong craving to smoke a cigarette whenever you face any tense situation. Here lies your real test. You will need a lot of willpower to resist that craving & face any tense situation without the help of nicotine. However, you can take homoeopathic mother tincture daphne indica q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. This medicine will help to reduce your craving for nicotine. To minimise the bad-effects of smoking take one single bulb garlic everyday at morning before brushing your teeth.

My girlfriend did breakup with me And now am suffering from stress What should I do.
You are going through grief, which is normal after loss of a loved one. Time is the healer for the emotional and behavioral changes, however if your depression is severe enough to affect you in a significant manner, kindly consult a psychiatrist for short term antidepressant medication, depending on the complaints.

My friend nikita. She's 28 and has a male best friend since 6 years. They knew each other since childhood, became friends through Facebook, exchanged their numbers and they both became good friends. They started talking everyday and also had long conversations at night. Then one day, when they were having their usual talks at night, her friend said something to her that only people in relationship say or do. Nikita thought that he's kidding and didn't respond and the guy slept. Next day again they spoke as usual and the guy gave this reason that he slept unknowingly last night. And he behaved like he don't know what happened yesterday. Nikita thought he might be sleepy and have said that, so she did not say anything to him. But this continued. Nikita already had a crush on him since childhood. So now when he said the same thing to her she couldn't stop herself and started responding. Nikita was in a dilemma that may be he likes her. But they never used to talk the same way during day time. So this went on for 6-7 months. Then one day the guy said to her that he likes a girl and he started describing that girl. Nikita thought that he's talking about her but unfortunately she was not that girl. Nikita has till now never asked him why he said her all those things and why did he said those 3 words to her when he did not mean anything. And the guy behaves the same like he used to during the day times (as if nothing had happened last night). Finally now the guy is with some other girl and my friend still thinks that he has a habit of talking in sleep. She is still thinking why did this happen. She keeps on asking this question to herself that was she in a relationship with someone and they broke up or someone (her best friend) made fool of her. And is it possible that someone can say the same type of things in sleep everyday till 6-7 months. They are still friends. He moved on in his life but my friend is not happy. She can't sleep at night, doesn't like to talk to anyone, doesn't like to eat, cries often, doesn't like to go out anywhere. Also she was a case of scoliosis and now she has operated. Due to post operation she can't be busy in other activities. Also she has suffered a lot from scoliosis. Please suggest what should she do now. Thank you.

This boy seems to have had crush for nikita and impulsively proposed. Then he might have met what he felt was a better girl and made up excuses of talking in night. No person unconsicously talks the same at night or proposes. Another possibility is the boy was manipulaitve. Whatever it is, nikita would get back to her normalcy with a short course of antidepressants and CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy from a psychiatrist. All the best.

I have a problem of forgetting, I can remember easily but forget after sometime. What should I do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

I suspect that the adolescent issues with regard to hormones may be affecting your ability to concentrate and remember. When the hormones play up, it lasts for a period of close to two years and during that time you could be influenced by three signs directly impacted by the chemical: you will tend to become aggressive and rebellious, you will become sexually active, and you will have acne and pimple problems. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring some distractions that come with it. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food. You may also include these noted foods that are good for your brain health: Brain-Friendly Foods MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. But the MIND approach “specifically includes foods and nutrients that medical literature and data show to be good for the brain, such as berries,” says Martha Clare Morris, ScD, director of nutrition and nutritional epidemiology at Rush University Medical Center. You eat things from these 10 food groups: • Green leafy vegetables (like spinach and salad greens): At least six servings a week • Other vegetables: At least one a day • Nuts: Five servings a week • Berries: Two or more servings a week • Beans: At least three servings a week • Whole grains: Three or more servings a day • Fish: Once a week • Poultry (like chicken or turkey): Two times a week • Olive oil: Use it as your main cooking oil. • Wine: One glass a day You avoid: • Red meat: Less than four servings a week • Butter and margarine: Less than a tablespoon daily • Cheese: Less than one serving a week • Pastries and sweets: Less than five servings a week • Fried or fast food: Less than one serving a week

You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do calisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.
