Oral thrush is a fungal infection which occurs due to dry mouth, uncontrolled diabetes and weak immune system with debilitating disease or patient on corticosteroids. You may need fluconazole & renal safety dosage of amphotericin B (IV drugs to be used only with the advice of oral & maxillofacial surgeons). Kindly consult an oral & maxillofacial surgeon in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need Candid ointment until then. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash.

Afraid of cavities? Chew some gum!

BDS, MDS
Dentist, Ahmedabad
Afraid of cavities? Chew some gum!
As many people eat food away from their home, it may not be easy to floss or use a mouthwash to gargle. A great alternative is to chew a sugar-free gum immediately after eating. This is something that could be carried around easily, and could supplement the oral care routine. It helps reduce the risk of cavities.

Research has shown that chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after eating or drinking can help reduce tooth decay risk by up to 40 percent !

Drink the juice of one lemon in one cup of warm water first thing in the morning (on an empty stomach. Make sure to wait 30 minutes before eating breakfast, as this will ensure your body gets the most energy and nutrients from the food you eat. The type of treatment you have for toothache /sensitivity/swelling will depend on the cause of the pain, so your dentist will examine your mouth and may carry out an X-ray to try to identify the problem. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by tooth decay, your dentist will remove the decayed area and replace it with a filling. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by a loose or broken filling, the filling will be taken out, any decay will be removed and a new filling put in place. •If the pulp inside your tooth is infected, you may need root canal treatment. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp and then inserting a special type of filling to seal the tooth and prevent re-infection. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling can't be treated using these methods, or if your tooth is impacted (wedged between another tooth and your jaw), it may need to be removed.

Bleeding Gums?

Certified Implantologist, BDS

Bleeding Gums?
The best way to treat gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene, although additional dental and medical treatments are sometimes necessary.

Good oral hygiene involves:-
1. Brushing your teeth for two to three minutes twice a day (in the morning and at night), preferably with an electric toothbrush
2. Using toothpaste that contains fluoride (fluoride is a natural mineral that helps protect against tooth decay)
3. Flossing your teeth regularly (preferably daily)
4. Not smoking
5. Regularly visiting your dentist (at least once every one to two years, but more frequently if necessary)

Your Tooth Is Alive

Your Tooth Is Alive

The most exciting thing about our oral cavity is your teeth are alive and not a dead bone. They grow just like your other organs and they do respond to many factors like nutrition, injury and bacteria.

It is important to understand what teeth, saliva, gums are all about. Lets have a quick overview of all the important structures in our mouth.

The anatomy:-

  • There is a structure in the center of the tooth known as pulp. This pulp contains blood vessels that provides nutrition to the tooth and nerves that carries sensation to the tooth.
  • This pulp is extended till the root tips at the bottom through root canals. This pulp is very fragile. Two protective coverings are there to en box the pulp i. E dentin which is yellow in color and it is closer to pulp. Second and outermost layer is enamel which is white in color.
  • The enamel decides the final color of tooth. Stronger the enamel structure the brighter the tooth looks.
  • Then comes the gums (gingiva), it gives the enveloping and protective covering to your tooth. It even acts as barrier and protects the intrusion of bacteria from outside. There are more than 400 species of bacteria that are trying to enter your blood stream through our mouth. Healthy gums provides the protection from all of them.
  • The roots of the tooth is attached to the jaw bone with the structure called as cementum and attachment fiber. This acts as shock absorb er and protects the tooth from biting forces.
  • Every tooth structure has its own role and importance.
  • Apart from gums dentin and other tooth structures serves important role to maintain it into a healthy state.
  • In coming blogs we will discuss the process of cavity formation and other problems in oral cavity.

White patches on tooth can be due to fluorosis or low minerals in enamel of teeth. Go to dental clinic for investigation. Sometimes bleaching also helps to reduce the patches. You should consult the doc.

Blood while brushing is indication of gingivitis. You need to get a thorough cleanup of your teeth with scaling. Also use a soft bristle toothbrush and don't exert too much pressure while brushing. Improve your brushing technique. Take a balanced diet.
