5-year-old daughter has asthma. What is the effect of using an asthma preventer long-term? I heard that using it for years might cause bone shrinkage. Is it true? Are there any vitamins or supplements to help vision?

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
If steroids are given orally for long periods of time than only it will cause bone shrinkage but if given through nebulisation than it won't have any side effects

Hello, recent times I am feeling someone holding me at night while sleeping, I was unable to open my eyes and can't do anything.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
Lybrate-user. It is practically impossible to be aware of someone holding you in your sleep at night. If you are aware that itself suggests that you are not into a deep relaxing sleep. Another possibility could be a night mare which occur during rem (awake) sleep. If that is occurring every night, please go for a sleep study to rule out any rem/ nrem sleep disorders.

My father have red eyes for over 10 days and it become more red during night and pains so what should I do Age- 41.

Fellowship in Comprehensive Ophthalmology, DOMS
Ophthalmologist, Sangrur
Hello there are many causes for redness of eyes mainly allergy, infection, inflammation and dry eyes etc. 1. Redness + itching: allergy 2. Redness + pain + watering + decreased vision: infection 3. Redness + pain: inflammation 4. Redness foreign body sensation: dryness if there is only redness then it is normal as slight exposure to dust, temperature or air or eyes may be red in morning. Stress may also cause redness. I usually do not treat when there is only redness, you can 1. Blink a lot 2. Wash eyes with fresh water 3. Cold compresses 4. Use lubricating eye drop like flogel these measures will help to keep your eyes healthy but it will not have any effect on redness (treating general redness alone is not necessary also) having said that you should consult local ophthalmologist for proper examination and treatment.

I got hit with a ball on the eye. During the day I see fine, but at night I see a dark spot at the bottom of my vision. What does this symptom mean and how do I treat it?

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology

This is some sort of retinal tear which you shouldn't treat by yourself. Get it evaluated by Retinal specialist to get appropriate treatment.

What is cataract, how it comes and it only comes for human beings or also for animals?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
A cataract is an eye disease in which the clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy or opaque, causing a decrease in vision. The lens is a portion of the eye that is normally clear. It focuses rays of light entering the eye onto the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. In order to get a clear image onto the retina, the portions of the eye in front of the retina, including the lens, must be clear and transparent. The light initiates a chemical reaction within the retina. The chemical reaction, in turn, initiates an electrical response which is carried to the brain through theoptic nerve. The brain then interprets what the eye sees.In a normal eye, light passes through the transparent lens to the retina. The lens must be clear for the retina to receive a sharp image. If the lens is cloudy from a cataract, the image striking the retina will be blurry and the vision will be blurry. The extent of the visual disturbance is dependent upon the degree of cloudiness of the lens. Most cataracts are related to aging. Cataracts are very common in older people. By age 80, more than half of all Indians either have some degree of cataract or have already undergone cataract surgery in one or both eyes. By age 95, this percentage increases to almost 100%. A cataract can occur in either or both eyes. Individuals with a cataract in one eye usually go on to develop a cataract in the other eye as well. A cataract is not contagiousand cannot spread from one eye to the other or from person to person. Cataracts do not cause the eye to tear abnormally. They are neither painful nor make the eye itchy or red. Although vision can be restored in most people with cataracts, age-related cataracts are still the most common cause of blindness in the world, Causes of cataracts The lens is made of mostly water and protein. The protein is arranged in a specific way that keeps the lens clear and allows light to pass through it to focus a clear image onto the retinal surface. As we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is our understanding of the cause of an age-related cataract. Over time, the cataract may become denser or cloud more of the lens, making it more difficult to see through. A cataract is not a growth or tumor. There are many causes of non age-related cataracts or secondary cataracts. Secondary cataracts are a result of similar changes to the protein of the lens, also resulting in visual blurring or visual loss. 1.Blunt or penetrating injury to the eye may cause secondary cataracts, either immediately after the injury or some weeks to years afterward. A cataract following an injury may appear and then not increase in density (be stationary) or be progressive. Eye surgery for other conditions can also cause cataracts. 2.Excessive exposure to ionizing radiation (X-ray), infrared radiation (as in glass blowers), or ultraviolet radiation cause secondary cataracts 3..Diabetes is associated with the development of secondary cataracts. 4.Inflammatory disease of the eye, such as iritis or uveitis, may cause or accelerate the development of cataract in the involved eye. 5.There are many genetic illnesses that are associated with the development of secondary cataracts. These include myotonic dystrophy, galactosemia, homocystinuria, Wilson's disease and Down syndrome, plus many others. Congenital infections with herpes simplex, rubella, toxoplasmosis, syphilis, and cytomegalic inclusion disease may also result in cataracts. 6.There are many medications which, when taken over a long period of time, can cause secondary cataracts. The most common of these are oralcorticosteroids, such as prednisone, which are used for a wide variety of medical conditions. 7.The term "congenital cataract" is used when a baby is born with any clouding of the lens. This may be present in one or both eyes, be stationary or be progressive. Causes include genetic disorders or intrauterine developmental disorders, both often associated with other physical abnormalities of the baby. 8.Atopic dermatitis, other diseases of the skin and mucous membranes, 9.hypothyroidism, and hyperparathyroidism are associated with the early development of cataracts. Patients who develop cataracts in both eyes at an early age often have family members who have also developed cataracts prematurely, implying a genetic cause, even in the absence of a recognized underlying disease. In the same way Cataract develop in the eye of Animals also as their eyes are no different from human eyes.

Hello good morning sir. I have problem in my eyes. I feel water in my eyes. Can you suggest my. What should I do. Thanks.

FICO, DNB Ophtalmology
Ophthalmologist, Gandhinagar
Watering of the eyes has multiple causes associated with it. To enumerate a few common causes: (1) allergy of the eye. It is usually caused by improper eye hygiene. There is a tendency to rub the eyes with fingers, handkerchief, cloth, etc. This is not a good habit because it tends to transmit lots of virus, bacteria and dust into the eye. Allergy usually presents with symptoms of watering (clear water), redness and itching of the eye. (2) infectious conjunctivitis: this is usually associated with white-yellowish discharge. If so, it would be a good idea to go and show to an eye specialist in person. (3) foreign body lodged in the eye. This is more commonly associated with people who drive 2 wheeler vehicles without protection. It occurs more commonly in one eye. Foreign bodies that commonly get lodged are eyelashes, insect wings, small insects, dust particles, iron particles (more common with people working in the iron industry) the solution for a foreign body lodged in the eye would be better provided by an eye specialist at the clinic. (4) raised intraocular pressure: this is a condition known as glaucoma. It is not so common as the previous mentioned conditions. There is usually associated pain in the eyes. It is commonly bilateral (occurs in both eyes). There is usually a positive family history of glaucoma associated in a majority of the cases. (5) inflammation of the coats of the eyeball. This is known as" uveitis" it is also a relatively less common condition. There is associated pain. It would require a thorough eye checkup including the retina-thus a good idea would be to visit the eye specialist in person. (6) refractive error: change of the power of the glasses, or, if not using glasses beforehand-you might be in the need for glasses. From the symptoms described by you, it seems more likely to be a case of allergy. Maintaining the precautions and hygiene that I mentioned should probably work well for you. You should also get your eye power tested. Maybe you might require glasses. Hope my suggestions helped you. Take care,

Hi. I am female and my age is 25. I have weak eyesight problem. My no is left eye -3 and in right -4 and number is increasing day by day. please help me is any medicine or ayurvedic treatment to decrease no. Or is possible to do laser treatment. please guide me.

Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery, DNB Ophtalmology, FICO, Diploma in Ophthalmology, MBBS

Generally the refractive error doesn't increase after 20 - 21 years of age. Get a detailed eye exam to rule out any other pathology. For Lasik, a few investigations need to be done to find whether you are eligible. Visit your ophthalmologist.

I am having eye weakness and they are paining really bad from the last few days. What shall I do?

BHMS
Homeopath, Delhi
Hello, follow the tips *always wash your eyes after you come back home. Some particles of dust may enter into our eyes when we are outside home and may cause irritation later. *always wear sun glasses when you have to remain outside in the sun for a long period of time. *eat well balanced diet. Include green leafy vegetables and fruits in the diet. *ensure that your eyes remain hydrated. Make a habit of 8-10 glasses of water daily. *take a good sleep. *do not read in dim light or watch tv from a short distance. *do not rub your eyes. *keep your hands clean with regular washing and hand sanitizer. Euphrasia 10% eye drop (sbl) instill 1-2 drops two times in a day for a week and update.

Hello. My right eye vision is blurry or say i can't see at all from my right eye.We had shown to Doctors of VMMC and AIIMS but they say that there is no treatment for this and it can not be cured.VMMC doctor's just did LASER and said this is just to prevent this from further increasing but it is not possible that i will ever able to see from my right eye as well.

Phaco Development Program, Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology, DNB Ophtalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Mysore
By your history i feel that in the right eye you have high power and less/no power in the left eye. Hence you have a condition called amblyopia. Amblyopia responds to therapy only when treatment is started before 10-15 years of age. So now it is too late to do anything now. Sorry

FPRS, DNB Ophtalmology

unfortunately there are no natural medications to remove spectacles permanently. you can either try contact lenses or plan for refractive lasik laser surgery Take frequent breaks while watching tvand dip a handkerchief in cold water and keep it over closed eyes for 2 minutes during breaks, you will feel better. Also get your eyes checked for any spectacle number.

How to improve my eye power Some of d doctors said me I should were the glass till my life ends But I don't like to were my glass is there any way to cure my problem.

Fellowship in Comprehensive Ophthalmology, DOMS
Ophthalmologist, Sangrur
There is no medication or food for improving eyesight or to get rid of glasses. If not interested in glasses then you can try a. Contact lens b. Lasik laser as your age is now 20 years so your number will not increase now whether you wear glasses or not as number becomes stable at age of 18-20 yrs. Having said that I advise you to eat balanced diet including green vegetables and seasonal fruits for keeping eyes and body healthy. As you are not comfortable with contact lens then go for lasik. Lasik is a very easy and painless procedure. If you want to get rid of glasses then go for lasik.

Could be because of many reasons but commonly it is due to allergy or infection. You need to visit eye specialist to differentiate between the two as the treatment is different. Also get your eyes checked for any glass power.
