This must be due to tonsil enlargement most of the time, do not worry et al, if it is one sided than no need to go for surgery unless it is harming you with fever, body ache, chills, and weakness.

Dizziness - Ways To Treat It!

MBBS, Diploma In Otorhinolaryngology (DLO)

Dizziness - Ways To Treat It!

Dizziness is usually described as a variety of sensations, which comprise of a feeling of faintness, unsteady, weak, light-headed, giddy or woozy. When dizziness causes a false feeling of spinning and the moving surroundings, it is known as vertigo.

Dizziness can be one of the most common reasons for a visit to the doctor. However, constant feeling of dizziness can affect a person's life drastically, but it is rarely life threatening. The treatment of dizzy sensation and dizziness mostly depends on the symptoms.

Causes of Dizziness

The common causes of dizziness are hypertension, certain medication, motion sickness and ear problems, especially disturbances of the inner ear. An injury, infection or poor blood circulation can also lead to dizziness. The triggers of dizziness and the sensations it provides are used to evaluate the cause. Also, the duration of the dizziness and the symptoms lead to a clue towards the cause of the same.

Dizziness Caused by the Inner Ear Problems

The balance of the body depends on the combined effort of many parts of the sensory system. These are:

  1. Sensory Nerves: These send messages to the brain in regard to the body positions and its movements
  2. Inner Ear: The inner ear has the organ of Corti which are responsible for detecting the motions and thereby help in the balance of the body.

In vertigo a person might feel that the things around them are moving, thus creating a swaying or a spinning motion. Vertigo is usually caused by the problems of the inner ear.

The common causes are:

  1. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), this happens when the calcium particles accumulate in the inner ear canals. The inner ear is responsible for the body movements and balance.
  2. Meniere's disease, a problem of the inner ear mainly caused by the build up of the fluids, thereby leading to a change in pressure. This causes vertigo along with hearing loss and tinnitus
  3. Vestibular neuritis is the problem of the inner ear and is largely due to infection. Infection leads to swelling of the nerves of the inner ear which affect the body movements.

Treatment of Vertigo Includes:

  1. Rehabilitation of the vestibular system by physical therapy in order to strengthen it.
  2. Canalolith repositioning exercises - body and head movements basically for BPPV. These movements help to move the Canaloliths(calcium deposits) from the inner ear canals to one of the chambers, which are further absorbed by the body. When the Canaloliths move, it might give rise to vertigo.
  3. Medicines are given to relieve symptoms of motion sickness and nausea. Antibiotics can be taken in case of infection and swelling
  4. Surgery in some cases.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Hi, it seems you are somehow allergic to certain foods and drinks including tea, which when taken is leading to excess mucous secretion and hence the stickiness and the need to clear throat often. I would first and foremost advise you to restrict intake of such foods/ drinks so that you can prevent most of these. At the same time, you most probably require a long term prophylactic treatment for your allergy issues. To clear off the sticky mucous, you can take a mucolytic as advised by your doc. In the absence of a mucolytic syrup, even drinking half a glass of luke warm water in which a teaspoonful of honey and about 2 pieces of black pepper are mixed properly, would help. At the same time, do streamline your dietary habits and also your lifestyle keeping ample room for daily exercise/relaxation/ de-stressing. You may connect with me in private to discuss and come up with a naturopathic treatment plan that suits you in particular and one that gives you a long lasting relief from your chronic symptoms. Hope this helps. All the very best.

I snore so loud says my parents and friends. I don't drink much, am an occasional drinker, I am not even overweight. I got my thyroid test done too and the results are normal. I get my nose blocked very frequently. Like when I go out in pollution and also running nose while eating spicy food. My mom says I used to have asthma while I was a kid. Does all these reasons have a connection with my snoring? Or why do I snore and how to control it.

General Physician, Cuttack
1.obstruction of flow of air through mouth and nose as in obesity, nasal obstruction due to polyp, DNS, Sinusitis, 2.alcohol, use of sleeping pill 3.smoking, consumption of tobacco. 4.It may be due to relaxed throat muscle in elderly and in children due to Tonsillitis. 5.Consult ENT specialist to exclude nasal causes of snoring 6.Reduce your weight if overweight 7.Keep the head end elevated while sleeping.
