Hi Can I give water to my 51/2 months baby? if yes then what should be the quantity given to him?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Bangalore
Milk contains a lot of water. No need to give water till the child starts eating dry food, or passes less urine due to loose motion or vomiting.

Skin Problems Your Baby May Suffer From!

MD - Dermatology, MBBS
Dermatologist, Bangalore
Skin Problems Your Baby May Suffer From!

The skin of a newborn baby is very fragile. It is thin and has low pigmentation. It takes quite some time (about a year) for the epidermis to develop and function effectively. Once the baby turns one, the skin gets thicker and more immune to skin problems. Here are some common skin problems found in almost every infant.

1 Diaper rash
Diaper rash is the development of red and inflamed skin in the area under the diaper. It is recommended to check the diaper for any wetness at regular intervals, and to change it when required. The diaper should not be too tight or left on too long. Applying a diaper rash ointment and keeping the area dry and open whenever possible can help in relieving your baby from the problem.

2 Baby acne
Development of acne/pimples on the skin of an infant is a common occurrence. It is advised to not to apply anything on it. It mostly resolves on its own in a couple of days.

3 Prickly heat
Prickly heat rashes are the rashes which develop on the face, neck, back or the bottom of the baby because of heat. To deal with this situation you should try to keep the infant cool and dry (not let him/her sweat) and ensure that they wear loose and comfortable clothes made of cotton.

4 Seborrhea
Rashes that develop on the scalp, eyebrows, cheeks, chest, and/or neck of a newborn baby (up to 6 months), are known as seborrhea. It appears to be gruesome, but does not bother the baby. It is recommended to use mild baby shampoo and creams to get rid of the problem. If there is no improvement, see a dermatologist.

5 Eczema
20% of the babies suffer from a very itchy skin rash known as 'eczema'. The affected area of the skin may turn red, ooze pus or crust over. It can be a result of an irritation caused due to sweating in a hot weather or due to the drying up of skin in a cold weather. Some clothing, specifically wool can even trigger this skin condition in a baby. A dermatologist or a pediatrician should be consulted in order to know what should be done.

Breast feeding - Why it is Important for Your Baby?

MD- Paediatrics & Neonatology, MBBS
Pediatrician, Gurgaon
Breast feeding - Why it is Important for Your Baby?

A baby should be breastfeed for at least the first few months after birth. Breastfeeding has a number of benefits for both the mother and child. Apart from being the best source of nutrition for the baby, it also helps the mother and child bond.

Here are a few benefits of breastfeeding your baby.

  1. Nutrition: No formula can be compared to the nutrition provided by a mother’s milk. The first milk produced by a mother’s breasts is known as colostrum which is rich in antibodies and proteins. Breast milk is made up of the perfect mix of proteins, vitamins and essential fats. It is also easier to digest as compared to formula feeds.
  2. Immunity boost: A mother’s milk is rich in antibodies and helps strengthen the newborn child’s immunity. These antibodies also help lower the baby’s risk of developing asthma or allergies later in life. Babies that are breastfed are also said to have a lower risk of suffering from ear infections, respiratory problems and diarrhoea. It also plays an important role in lowering chances of sudden infant death syndrome. Breastfeeding is also said to protect babies from certain types of cancer in infancy and later stages,
  3. Bonding: While being breastfed, a baby is held close to the mother and has skin to skin contact. This makes the baby feel secure and helps him or her to bond with the mother. For the mother, this process can also help fight postpartum depression and help reconnect with the baby.
  4. Healthy weight: Babies who are breastfed are said to be less likely to develop obesity. This is because breast milk has lower levels of insulin as compared to formula and babies who are breastfed have higher level of appetite and fat regulating hormone called leptin. As they grow, these babies put on a healthy amount of weight, but refrain from overeating and have healthier eating patterns. This helps maintain a healthy BMI and prevents diseases like diabetes etc.
  5. Boosts intelligence: Studies show that babies who were breastfed for the first six months have a higher IQ than those who were not. Thus, breastfeeding is said to play a significant role in cognitive development. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, breast milk is said to fatty acids that are not available in formulas, Secondly, the emotional bonding between mother and child is also said to contribute towards boosting IQ levels.

Aapne birth weight nahi bataya. Mother ke nipple problem ke liye apne Dr. se sampark kare vo iska ilaj batayenge. Bacche ka daily weight gain dekhna padta hai agar hame ye dekhna hai ki maa ka dudh paryapt hai ki nahi. Powder milk katori chamachse de rahe hain vo sahi hai. Cows milk dene ki jaroorat nahi hai. Bacce to multivitamins aur calcium supplements bhi dena hoga. Bacche to infection ki aasar hai ki nahi uske liye apne Dr. se jaroor mile.

Your child needs a personal consultation with pediatrician to rule out any serious illness. If your child is having difficulty in breathing, bluish discoloration, not able to feed properly, poor activity then he needs urgent evaluation. Keep the child supported in upright/ semi reclined position while feeding, this will reduce chances of choking& regurgitation. Watch when your child cough, is there any relationship to feed, any allergy, any other symptom like fever, difficulty in breathing .sometimes occasional cough are normal.

This is a common complaint made by parents. In my opinion it is parents who are at fault. Young kids do not know what is good for them so they continue with natural way of getting nutrition . At the age of 5-6 months mother must start giving liquid, semisolids as weaning food.Failure to do it results in malnutrition anorexia

Get a dilated refraction done by an ophthalmologist. Two important things which shouldn't be missed is your child's correct glass power (which maybe a plus number) and a thorough fundus examination to look for any other positive findings for headache. Thanks.

Soaps for babies have to be mild. Don't use antiseptic/ lightening soaps. Use glycerin based soaps and apply moisturizer twice a day on damp skin. Any oil is good for light gentle massage before bathing the child. For scalp avoid coconut oil in first year.

My son 18 months old not taking adequate food kindly advice me starting some health drinks like pediasure.
These kind a drinks cut of age is 2 years. We don't these heavy protein load drinks before 2 years. Secondly you have plenty of drinks which are home made. Like kheer. Raab. Rabdi. Apple milk shake. Etc which would give you similar advantage. Alas in cost effective way! ;)
