Headache in pregnancy? I'd rather not take medication.

There's much you can do to prevent or relieve headaches during pregnancy without taking medication. Start with simple prevention tips:

Avoid headache triggers. Keep track of your meals, activities and headaches for several days to help pinpoint your headache triggers — then do your best to avoid your triggers.
Include physical activity in your daily routine.Try a daily walk or other moderate aerobic exercise.
Manage stress. Find healthy ways to cope with the stressors in your life, such as delegating tasks on your to-do list and spending time with people who lift your spirits.
Practice relaxation techniques. Try calming activities such as deep breathing, yoga and visualization.
Eat smaller, more-frequent meals throughout the day. Regular meals will keep your blood sugar on an even keel, which can help prevent headaches.
Drink plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated can keep you feeling your best.
Follow a regular sleep schedule. Fatigue and lack of sleep can contribute to headaches during pregnancy. Go to bed and wake up at about the same time every day, even on weekends.
Consider biofeedback. With this mind-body technique, you learn to control certain bodily functions — such as muscle tension, heart rate and blood pressure — to prevent headaches or reduce headache pain. If you'd like to try biofeedback to treat headaches during pregnancy, ask your health care provider for a referral to a biofeedback therapist.

When a headache strikes:

Rest. Lie down in a dark, quiet room with your eyes closed.
Use a compress. Apply a warm compress (such as a hot towel) to your face, eyes and temples — or try a cold compress on the back of your neck.
Try massage. Ask someone to massage your shoulders and neck to relieve tension. You might rub your temples, too.

If these steps don't help, check with your health care provider about other treatment options for headaches during pregnancy.

Most pregnant women can safely take acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) to treat occasional headaches. Your health care provider might recommend other medications as well. As with any medication, though, make sure you have the OK from your health care provider first.

Hello- Indian females lack nutrition in their daily meals, which cause menstrual problems regularly. Start consuming dairy products (except curd) in excess. They are the good source of omega 3, which inhibits the release of Prostaglandins in blood and hence prevent menstrual pain effectively.

4 Tips to Keep Diabetes at Bay

MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS

4 Tips to Keep Diabetes at Bay

Diabetes is also known as diabetes mellitus, is a group of metabolic diseases, which raises the glucose level in the blood. If suffering from diabetes, parts of your body might get affected with other diseases as well, like bad eyesight, etc.

Diabetes is of 3 types:

  1. Type 1 Diabetes: where your body stops insulin production.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes: where your body does not produce enough insulin to function on or where the cells of your body do not react toward the insulin produced
  3. Gestational Diabetes: This is the diabetes you or your partner may suffer from during pregnancy.

Suffering from diabetes can make your lifestyle extremely difficult as you will have to go through a lot of restrictions. In order to avoid diabetes and its various outcomes, here are some tips you can follow:

  1. Keep your weight in control: Make sure you are of the right weight according to your height. If you are more than what you should weigh, and you are creeping towards obesity, you have a high chance of succumbing to diabetes. If you are already obese, start working towards losing weight. Even if you lose 5% of your weight, you will slash the risk of having diabetes by 70%.
  2. Walk: No exercise is better and easier than walking. Try walking as much as you can. Walking will help you reduce the risk of getting affected with diabetes. If you walk for around 35 minutes every day, you are cutting down the risk of diabetes by almost 30%. Walking, being an exercise, helps your body use the insulin produced in your body more efficiently.
  3. Drink coffee: Coffee, unlike common belief of being harmful, is actually very beneficial when it comes to keeping diabetes at bay. Coffee contains caffeine, which is believed to improve metabolism. Coffee also has potassium, magnesium and various antioxidants which enable the cells to absorb glucose. Drinking coffee regularly might lower the risk of diabetes by 29%.
  4. Get proper rest at night: If you sleep for less than 6 hours every night, then the risk of you suffering from diabetes is doubled. But that doesn't mean you are supposed to oversleep. If you sleep more than 8 hours, the risk of being affected with it rises to almost 75%. Hence sleep at least for 6 to 8 hours each night for a healthy life sans diabetes.

I am 24 year girl. Earlier. From vagina. The lubrication was normal. While making love. But from a month. There is a. Very little lubrication and also I'm not feeling enough sensation. So. What to do? Is it normal?

MD-Ayurveda, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Sexologist, Haldwani
Hello- No its not normal. When a young woman has hormone issues, vaginal dryness will often follow. Arousal issues are another cause of vaginal dryness in young women. If your hormones are balanced, then you and your partner should incorporate some lubricants as part of your foreplay. There are a wide range of products on the market from herbal remedies to pharmaceutical pills and creams which profess to increase libido and lubrication. Certain products work better on certain people, so experiment with different products to find one that works best for you.

Leprosy: Treatment and Prevention

MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy, MBBS
Dermatologist, Gurgaon
Leprosy: Treatment and Prevention

Mentioned throughout history as a curse, leprosy was considered as a punishment of sins by many cultures as it was widespread and common. However, modern science demystified it and de-stigmatized it to the point where the occurrence of leprosy within the population has gone down to very low levels, although it is still prevalent among certain populations.

Prevention of leprosy: Leprosy is caused by the bacterial infection of Mycobacterium leprae and it is classified into multiple types. Leprosy is communicable through contact with common objects or a person by infected droplets within their nose. It primarily affects mucous membranes and the skin and the nerves on the hands, feet, and in extreme cases may cause disfigurement as well. There are no specific ways to prevent leprosy as no specific correlation between transmission and development has been found so far. Leprosy can happen through one time contact or through contact over extended period of time within the same household. Thus preventive measures will primarily include the following:

  1. Regular checkups by going to the doctor
  2. Ensuring that surfaces are kept clean if you share a household with a leprosy patient
  3. Skin biopsies at regular intervals just to check if you may have contracted the bacteria
  4. If a rash has developed, then it is urgent that you visit the doctor. Earlier the leprosy is detected, quickly it can treated and resolved

Incidences of leprosy have reduced over the last few decades due to improvements in medicine and early detection. This has allowed people to nip the problem in the bud and does not allow it to spread within their bodies or to other people.

Treatment of leprosy: The primary weapon that modern medicine has against leprosy is known as MDT or multidrug therapy. Multidrug therapy is the combination of multiple drugs, which attack the various aspects of leprosy, such as skin problems, nerve damage, loss of sensation, deterioration of skin conditions etc. This is the proven way to not only reduce symptoms, but also cure the problems in the long run.

Some of the drugs in the MDT used are as follows:

  1. Rifampicin and dapsone
  2. Rifampicin and clofazimine and dapsone
  3. Rifampicin, minocycline and ofloxacin

However, the combination will depend on the type of leprosy the person is affected with, such as paucibacillary leprosy or multibacillary leprosy and thus can only be prescribed by the doctor after thorough and detailed examination.

Hello lybrate-user, I can understand your fear and anxiety related to your status, may be this new doctor wanted to cross check just to clarify things, so do not be so anxious about your pregnancy, as you know that previous scan were absolutely fine, continue your supplements and other medicine recommended by your obstetrician. And try some deep breathing exercise to release your anxiety and stress. Keep yourself happy, and your baby will start growing and developing in healthy way. You can listen good soothing instrumental music too, as after 24 weeks baby started responding to outer sounds. Take care Thank you.

My sister is suffering from Polycystic Ovary. She's just married and want to conceive. What is the treatment or diet plan for her?

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Polycystic ovary syndrome (pcos) occurs when very small cysts (small, fluid-filled sacs) develop in the ovaries. The usual symptoms of pcos are irregular or light periods or no periods at all. This is because, in women with pcos, ovulation (the release of an egg) may not take place as often as normal. You should opt homoeopathic treatment, it has cure for pcos. Treatment is based on totality of symptoms and constitution. It takes time but resolve the disease by root. In pcos first we target to get your periods back to normal.
