Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear that causes inflammation (redness and swelling) and a build-up of fluid behind the eardrum?

MS - ENT, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Raipur
Yes. It's actually because of traveling of infection from Upper respiratory airway through Eustachian Tube to middle ear. It can also be due to any anatomical abnormalities leading blockage of that Eustachian tube.

Hello. Doctor. I am rahul from kanpur, I have some pain in my ears what should I do.

Master of Surgery, Post Graduate Diploma in ENT, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist,
Pus - Pain is a common problem in patients of Otitis Media. It may also be because of fungus in the canal. If there is a perforation of the ear drum, you have to get it operated. Do not waste time. Once the ear is dry, get operated. Also note that in rainy season, fungus may also grown in the ear canal. You need to get it checked by ENT doctor, get it cleaned and take medicines accordingly.

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
If a person suffering from nasal obstruction with mild to moderate nasal allergies it means most probably he is suffering from dns (deviated nasal septum. Nasal obstruction is because of the deviated portion of the nasal septum (this is the bony partition of the nose cavity. Allergies are because of the hampered muco-ciliary mechanism (normally mucus is produced in the nose to moisten our nose cavity, oral cavity, and help food bolus to move downward, this mucus is basically moves on the cilia of the nasal mucosa) this mechanism gets hampered and mucus start accumulating in the nose and sinus cavity which is why thick mucus comes from nose in patients of nose obstruction and person develops sinusiits. When a surgeon removes the nasal septum deviation has not been removed properly the symptoms persists, and patient thinks that the nose bone has again regrown. It is not because of regrowth but because of half surgery done or due to the non removal of the deviation (reason can be many) nowadays nasal septal deviation can be removed endoscopically.

What should we eat during tonsillitis, very much confused elder say not to eat anything cold, on Internet it says don't eat hot, eat ice cream. Can't understand really what to do.

MBBS

-1. Do warm saline gurgling 2-3 times daily 2. Take throat lozenges, 3. Drink warm/cold fluid to ease pain 4. Have smooth/semi solid food, 5. Take adequate rest 6. Take a full course of antibiotic for 10 days after consulting ent specialist (to avoid recurrence), 7. Take analgesic like paracetamol/ibuprufen for throat pain 8. If recurrent symptoms causing upper air way obstruction/difficulty in swallowing, surgery- is indicated 9. Consult a good ent surgeon for endoscopic surgery//laser surgery.

If you are suffering from recurrent tonsillitis then I would suggest you will have to go for tonsil surgery after consulting an ent. Your hampered growth may be due to recurrent tonsillar infections.

Snore a Lot? These Yoga Positions Can Help You Control it

The thought of waking up fresh in the morning after a good night’s sleep itself is refreshing. However, many are deprived of this simple pleasure of life, one of the main cause behind it is snoring. Whether you are snoring or have a person next to you snoring, the result is a disturbed sleep, which leaves you feeling tired and not-very-rested.

Snoring is caused by multiple reasons including stress, obesity, smoking, sinus problems, circulatory problems, poor diet, large tongue or tonsils and with age. This leaves the person sleep deprived, including a feeling of drowsiness, sore throat, increased risk of heart diseases, reduced libido and decreased concentration.

While there are surgical corrections that can get rid of snoring, yoga has some simple, effective pranayamas and asanas that have been proven to be effective since times immemorial. They improve lung capacity, help in weight management, keep the air passages open and also help in stress management. Try the following asanas and pranayamas to see snoring disappear.

Pranayama: This improves the strength of the facial and throat muscles. Bhramari or Humming Pranayama and Ujjayi pranayama are specifically useful in snoring patients. In Bhramari Pranayama, the lips are closed and the soft palate vibrations are entirely due to nasal airflow. Practised mouth snoring over a period of time where the soft palate is lifted towards the pharynx produces a buzzing bee sound. Both breathing in and out happens through the nostrils producing this sound, although slightly different during inhalation and exhalation. Ujjayi Pranayama is where a hissing breathing sound is produced due to the nasal snoring instead of the mouth snoring in the Bhramari exercise.

Breathing and Chanting the Om Mantra: Sit on the floor in a relaxed position with eyes closed and take few deep breaths. Begin to chant the word OM repeatedly for a few minutes. Break the word into two parts, the first part of OOOO should come from deep within followed by the lighter MMMM. This helps meditate, relax, and reduce snoring. Try to do this breathing and chanting at least ten to twelve times, and more if possible, on a daily basis.

Another effective measure is the Simha Garjasana or Roaring Lion Pose where you kneel down on the mat, lean back so that the hips are resting on the heels. The palms are faced in the space between the knees with fingers spread apart. Tilt your head back while taking deep breaths. This improves the airway and reduces the snoring.

Kapalbhati, Bhujangasana Dhanurasana, Warrior Pose and Surya Namaskar are also other effective asanas. When done regularly over a period of time, it helps in getting rid of snoring. This in turn makes you feel fresh in the morning; ready to take on the day. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Hello Doctors. I am facing cold problem. My one side nostril is completely blocked. I am taking Medicine Macbery cold at morning and Fexomis-M at night. What should I more do to get rid of it?

MS - ENT,MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Kolkata
Hi lybrate-user you can start steam inhalation twice a day with plain water. Nasal drop. Just have one of the medicines. The first one is a combination cold medicines. Not very sure about the other one. If cold has persisted for more than 3 days you might need a course of antibiotics.

I am suffering from sinusitis. Is it safe to administrate xylometazoline solution for a long period. Kindly reply.

MBBS, MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Ahmedabad
It is definitely not advisable to use xylomatazoline for more than 3 to 5 days. It will definitely give excellent immediate relief for short period but it increases swelling inside nose and worsens sinusitis.
