My brother is suffering from asthma from past 5 years. What is the best way to deal with it?

Pulmonologist, Jaipur
Take regular treatment with inhalers as your doctor prescribe. He knows how to monitor and help him. Asthma may not be curable but is definitely manageable illness.

Sir i have breathing problem due to cold since 2 years. I consulted many doctors they said that i have allergy in my nose. Please suggest me good medicine ? .

General Physician (AM)
Alternative Medicine Specialist, Chandigarh
There is no such allergy as allergy in nose ! An attack may be brought on by contact with substances to which the person is sensitive and emotional or dietary factors should not be overlooked. A sudden change of temperature can bring on an attack. May be Your respiration system is allergic to certain allergens which causes breathing problem or it can be due to cold and damp weather, you will have to figure out what causes you breathing problems? It can be cured . Try using (Biochemic) Ars Iod 12X 4 pills 3 times and Nat Sulph 6X 4 pills 4 times.

Asthma can be most probably reversed if you Avoid your triggers like smoke, food products, drugs ,stress etc Decontaminate your decor. No pets and no carpets No first hand or second hand smoking Clean regularly Regular exercise Maintain a healthy weight Maintain optimal humidity Changing your diet and eating habits is a must .and environment change where you reside or work or commute will also definitely help if you want specific advice how to treat Asthma naturally take a consult. Every Asthma patient is different and triggers vary. Remember You have to treat the root cause and not the symptoms.

CONTROL OF ASTHMA
*******************************
Most uncontrolled asthmatics think they are controlled

Two thirds of patients with uncontrolled asthma think that their disease is well under control. Asthmatics on proper medicines can not only live a normal life but also reduce their future complications.

Uncontrolled asthmatics invariably end up with complications related to right heart due to persistent lack of oxygenation in the blood.

Dr Eric van Ganse, of University of Lyon, France, in a study published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, examined 1,048 subjects with inadequate asthma control. When asked how they would rate their asthma control over the past 14 days, over 69 percent considered themselves to be completely or well controlled. Failure to perceive inadequate asthma control was more likely to be found in patients between the ages of 41 and 50 years.

The reasons are:
Most asthmatics fail to perceive their level of disease control and with an uncontrolled state they often feel that their asthma is under control.
In severe asthma, low blood oxygen levels might impair a person’s ability to assess their own breathing difficulty.
The notion of asthma control seems poorly understood by asthmatic patients.
Mild to moderate asthma limits the activities of a person and over a period of time they take that as their normal limits.

My 5-year-old daughter has asthma. What is the effect of using an asthma preventer long-term? I heard that using it for years might cause bone shrinkage. Is it true?

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
If steroids are given orally for long periods of time than only it will cause bone shrinkage but if given through nebulisation than it won't have any side effects

I do have dust allergy. So, even with mildest dust in the rum I get a running nose and continuous sneeze and the irritable feeling every time. So, what can I do to cure this permanently?

MS - ENT,MBBS
ENT Specialist, Kolkata
Dust allergy is partly genetic and partly environmental. Thus it never goes away. With better, less dusty environment  the extent if the problem gets reduced. Medicines help to downregulate the immune response of your body to these environmental allergens. Long term lifestyle  changes with gradually tapering medication  helps to tackle chronic sinus problems.  Start taking Steam inhalation twice a day. *For chronic allergic rhinosinusitis you will need to take a long term course of antibiotics  together  with Nasal sprays. *You will need to avoid dusty environment  and dust mites, animal dander etc. Regular cleaning of AC air filters. Wearing mask while driving 2 wheelers/working in dusty  areas Medical  management  is done for 3 months and then patients  condition is reviewed.  Intermittent treatment is not beneficial  in the long run. Unfortunately Lybrate doesn't allow prescription of medicines in open forum. Hope this helps. Dr. Amrita Basu.
