BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hello. Take homoeopathic medicine - Schwabe's Alpha-Coff and Glyzyrrhiza Glabra 1x - both thrice a day daily for 4 days. Management: - Avoid cold drinks and fried food, take healthy food. -Avoid exposure to Air-conditioner or cold air (wrap a warm stole or muffler around neck). -Avoid excessive or rough use of your voice/ shouting. -Gargle with warm water and salt 3 times a day and take steam-inhalation once before going to bed. Home Remedies for Cough: -Stir some into some hot tea for comforting cough relief. You can also eat a spoonful of honey before bed to help calm coughs. -Warm saltwater gargles help moisturize your throat, which can quiet coughs. -Drink peppermint tea to help relieve coughs. -Brew a eucalyptus tea by steeping a few fresh or dried eucalyptus leaves in hot water for 15 minutes. Drink this tea up to 3 times a day to help soothe a sore throat and calm coughs. -Make a hot ginger tea to help soothe a chronic cough. -Turmeric is a traditional cough remedy that many people have found effective for coughs. Try mixing half a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk. You can also try turmeric powder and a teaspoon of honey for dry cough. Get your blood tested (empty stomach) for – CBC, ESR, AEC; also, Sputum examination, an X-ray (chest), Urine (R & M) and Stool examination (R & M) done. (In case required, may advise you some other tests later).

Dear Sir my father age is 70. He is having High Blood pressure since 10 years and he is taking Tenoric 25mg morning and night. His Blood pressure is in control. My father is having pain in my calf muscles of both legs when he wakes up in the morning. What could be the reason and what's the cure. Whether this is related to B. P?

CLINICAL CARDIOLOGY, MD - Consultant Physician
Cardiologist, Surat
Hi. This is definitely not related to bp or the bp medicines that he is taking presently. Most commonly this is related to dehydration. And this is very common in hot summer seasons like this one. So my advice is to take plenty of fluids orally, have fruits and fruit juices and avoid the hot sun. He should be fine with this. Take care.

Hello lybrate user reasons of low blood pressure are low salt intake or dehydration that is low water intake. So increase salt intake in your diet. Drink at least 4-5 liters of water every day. Drink 1-2 glass of lemon juice every day with adding salt. You can also drink electral powder sachet every day.

Why do cholesterol increase suddenly otherwise till that time it is maintain. What is pathology.

DNHE, MD - Alternate Medicine, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Rajkot
Dear lybrate user, actually cholesterol is a fatty acid. The cholesterol seen in lipid profile report suggested liver can not digest such fat and eeen in reports. According to ayurveda, it is not too much dnager for the body. When we eat opily food for a long time, our liver cannot digest it and it is shown in the report. Accoding to ayurveda, the undigested food (ama) is considered as a cholesterol. For more details consult me.

Cornflakes can be taken in evening snacks for diabetic, hypertension and early CKD patient? If not what is the most suitable evening snacks for the patient on low protein diet?

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Hye. Food planning will depend on the amount of proteins that you need for the day. To decide the proteins, other nutrients many parameters need to be considered. This requires personalised planning. You don't want to end up eating low amounts of protein too. Cornflakes is not low protein, neither is it low sodium or potassium as well. You might want to skip packaged foods.

I am heart patient ,using medicine regularly. Wt should I use mustard oil or olive oil?

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Dear lybrateuser, -Both are heart healthy oils, olive oil contains more monounsaturated fats & antioxidents as compared to mustard oil, do not use olive oil for deep frying as its burning point is low -whichever oil you use, consume not more than 1-2 teaspoon a day as they have saturated fats which are harmful for the body if taken in large quantities & are also calorie dense which addlot of calories to the diet -the healthier heart friendly methods are, baking, grilling, boiling, steaming.

5 Causes of Heart Failure

DM - Cardiology, MD-Internal Medicine , MBBS
Cardiologist, Delhi
5 Causes of Heart Failure

Heart failure occurs when the heart fails to pump blood around the body and organs for oxygen and nutrients. As blood moves through the heart and body at a slower rate, pressure in the heart increases. The chambers of the heart stretch to hold more blood to be able to pump through the body. This helps the blood to move but eventually the heart muscle walls weaken, unable to pump blood efficiently. The kidneys, in response cause the body, to retain fluids. The leakage of fluid in the tissues and the organs congests the heart, leading to heart failure.

Any of the following conditions can be responsible for weakening the heart and causing heart failure.

1. Coronary artery disease: this is a disease of the arteries supplying blood and oxygen to the heart that causes decreased blood flow to heart muscle. If the arteries get blocked or narrowed (due to the buildup of fatty deposits), the heart fails to get oxygen and nutrients, which may eventually lead to heart failure.

2. Heart attack: if the artery becomes suddenly blocked or the plaques formed by fatty deposits rupture, it can lead to a heart attack. This happens due to the formation of a blood clot which may block blood flow to an area of heart muscle.

3. High blood pressure: high blood pressure puts an extra strain on the heart for it to work harder to circulate blood throughout the body. As a result, the heart muscle may become stiff or weak to effectively pump blood.

4. Heart muscle weakness: this condition can have many causes including diseases, infections, drug and alcohol abuse. Genetic factors may also contribute to the weakening of heart muscles.

5. Other diseases: chronic diseases like diabetes, HIV, hyperthyroidism or a buildup of iron or protein can also lead to heart failure.

My husband is 70, a heart patient, and has a pot belly. We eat all the right foods and are on a constant diet! I don't know what I'm doing wrong! Need help please.

Certificate in Laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic Surgery, Fellowship in Paediatric cardiac Surgery, M. Ch. (CVTS), MS, MBBS
Cardiologist, Calicut
As we grow older we need less food to do the normal duties. I suggest you find ways to avoid sugars, move onto low carbohydrate diet and keep only small meals 3-4 times a day. Especially at night. During the day he should try to do as much house work as possible, until he can start walking outside the house and if possible start exercising as guided by the regular cardiologist (heart doctor) you are consulting. Wish you all the best.

Dear Sir, I am 30 years old. Once I just randomly thought to check my blood pressure and I was shocked to see it wasn't normal it was 127/85. Then after 3 weeks I checked again it was 133/90. Can you please tell me what can be the reason? Or do you think I should follow some diet. As I don't want to be on medicine at this early age. I am little worried as its in the family. Please advice.

DRCH, BHMS

120/80 is normal blood pressure but 10 plus or 10 less variation is also a normal. It is not to worry. But for precaution you should not take excess salt in diet, eat less oily food, do not take stress, do not consume alcohol or smoke. Exercise daily and maintain your weight also.
