Hearing Loss In Children - Signs & Symptoms You Must Know!

Hearing Loss In Children - Signs & Symptoms You Must Know!

You may find out that your child is suffering from hearing loss when he is born or he may be diagnosed with the condition later in life. Hearing loss in children is commonly caused by otitis media, birth problems and on the account of certain injuries or illnesses.

Signs and symptoms

The early stage symptoms of hearing loss in children are as follows:

  1. No reaction to extremely loud noises

  2. No response or reaction to your voice

  3. The child makes some sounds, which taper off

The other symptoms which follow include:

  1. He may pull and rub his ears.

  2. He may act cranky constantly without any proper reason.

  3. He might stop paying attention.

  4. Low energy levels are indicated.

  5. He may find it hard to follow directions.

  6. He may ask you to increase the volume of the radio or TV.

  7. Fever and ear pain are also likely symptoms.

Treatment

Early hearing loss can affect your child’s language learning skills. If the problem is diagnosed and treated soon, the problem with language can be avoided. The method of treatment depends on the cause of hearing loss in your child and the severity of hearing loss.

There are certain medicines for hearing---prescribed by your ENT Surgeon. Pleas take the point watchful waiting. Even if you have slightest doubt of hearing loss contact ENT immediately.

The primary treatment methods of hearing loss in children include the following:

  1. Watchful waiting: Sometimes, the condition may resolve on its own and the treatment involves simple monitoring of your child for positive changes.

  2. Medicines: There are certain medicines for hearing loss in children, which may be prescribed by your pediatrician.

  3. Ear tubes: Ear tubes may be recommended if medicines and monitoring do not work. The tubes allow fluid to drain and help in preventing infections. A minor surgery has to be undertaken on your child for getting the ear tubes placed. This will solve the hearing loss and other related issues.

  4. Hearing aids: Hearing aids may be used to allow your child hear better. It is safe for children to use ear tubes after the age of one month. For the right hearing aid for your child, you need to consult a hearing specialist.

  5. Implants: Cochlear implants are used to treat hearing loss in many children. These are electronic devices which are put in the inner ear to benefit hearing. These should be used only if hearing aids did not succeed and these are meant to be used only in case of children with serious hearing problems.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Yes lybrate-user, you can give formula milk in the night and if possible give more of cow milk instead of buffalo milk as the fat percentage in buffalo milk is more.

My 4 years old daughter often becomes angry when she doesn't get her desired things and then she shouts, hits everyone and takes time (near about 30-40 min) to come in normal situation. She is very sensitive in nature and close to her mother. But when she's angry even mother can not control her. We are both working parents and she stays in creche after school.

My child is of 8 months old can we use soli wax or should we use olive oil for wax in his ear.
First check out if he has any wax in his ears. Small amounts of wax will not do any harm to his ears on the contrary it will protect the ears. Soliwax is a better product to use than olive oil.

Make the bed more comfortable/warmer. Make sure you stay with the baby long enough after putting it down.

Breastfeeding is the best option as easily available and considered best for premaure babies. You can give expressed breast milk by dropper or katori chamach to the baby. But if you are facing problem with expression of milk or not producing enough milk .then you can start a milk bottle for the baby or so called formula feed. Or. You can start a bottle milk as soon as baby able to suck the bottle without facing any breathing difficulties or its not producing any stomach trouble.

It appears more and more from the brief that you have shared that she may be going through her ‘terrible twos’. For your information, it is at two years that children discover that they are no longer the center of the world, and it upsets them so that they want to test boundaries to see how much you will tolerate her before she either makes you reject her or she learns to control her urges and learns that you will have needs to be met too sometimes, and only after that her needs will be met: this is a very important learning she must achieve around this age: Sounds like she is not going through that phase happily. In fact she is winning this battle and ruling over you! I suggest that you give her a lot of physical contact and enjoy her company. She needs to understand that whatever happens you will love her. I hope you have taken her for all the necessary medical checks to rule out any other cause. In the meantime there are some questions that I would love answered, or for you to take him to a child psychiatrist, if there are any disturbing events. My questions: Was the conception normal? Was there a miscarriage or abortion before this child was born or after? How was the nine months of pregnancy for the mother i.e. was she under any kind of stress? Was the pregnancy normal? Was there any threat to the pregnancy? Was she on any medication? Was there any need for supplements? What was her emotional condition? Did she like the pregnancy? Was she happy during and about the pregnancy? Did she get good support from her husband? Was the delivery normal and on the due date? How long was she breast fed? Did she have any problems with bedwetting etc.? This information will help even a counselor to bring further insight into this problem. If some of these questions raise any serious concerns, you can help the child resolve it with some professional help from a child counselor. You are only getting into a competition with this child and she is winning happily but at your misery. So back off a bit and just give her boundaries and only then do you need to get into the act, if there is non-compliance. Then too do not use violence but negotiate with her (since she is sounding like a knowing child), and give her consequences, which are different from punishments. Confront the behavior and never, ever, reject the child/personality. Also do not show any loss of control and be composed when dealing with her. Focus on her positives and mildly confront the aggression: it makes no sense to fight fire with fire i.e. her aggression with yours!!! You are provoking her rebelliousness and this may lead to later repercussions that will be pretty unsavory. There is a very old book I remember reading entitled, ‘Talk so that kids will listen, and listen so that kids will talk’. Unfortunately I have forgotten the author. If you can find that book, it will help you tremendously. At the play group, please check if there are any unusual behaviors and whether someone is bullying her.

Whatever you give to your daughter should be sanitized properly. Breastfeeding has to be continued till 2 years of age. Breast milk strengthens the immunity power of the baby. No other food or milk does wonders as breastmilk does! So continue breastfeeding. Apart from that, Introduce foods only one at a time such as a teaspoon of boiled mashed rice, boiled mashed potato, clear veg strained water, clear strained dal water, thin buttermilk. Make sure your using clean water and utensils.
