Hi, I am in love with a man for last three years. Parents fixed our marriage. But recently he is changing a lot, I can't accept him in his new character. I love him a lot. He seems to be very selfish. I am very sincere to him. Please suggest me some ways to recover i am mentally very down.

Many people behave well before marriage because they don't want to lose the other person. You will also do the same thing. But after marriage they show their true nature: sometimes that very night, sometimes a week later and sometimes even years later. If he is showing his true nature now itself and you don't like it, call it off. May be he does not care enough and feels an advantage over you and is willing to act so. This may be a sign that he thinks too much about himself. This is not a good sign. so try him out and if you see more and more of his arrogance, I suggest that you call it off. In the fist few years couples normally go through a power struggle to decide who is going to be the boss. It seems like he wants to establish that he is the one who wears the pants in the house. If you like him despite that then it may be ok. You can decide from what I am saying how to go about it, isn't it?

During exam time I can't concentrate my mind on study so what I do for concentration.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
The proverbial exam fever is capable of causing a lot of stress. Stress is not a good indicator for studies. But you may work on the following: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid all junk food.

Nowadays my vocabulary sound is not good. It's very tough for others to understand . Mostly 'S' sound is coming while talking. What to do for this ? How can I change.

General Physician, Nashik
Breathe deeply and exhale on a hisssssssing sound. Repeat 10 times. Proper breathing is the foundation for a healthy voice AND control over nervous energy that can make the voice quiver. Say “Mm-mmm (as in yummy) Mmm-hmm (like yes) ” Repeat 5 times. This develops mask resonance, which creates a clean and vibrant sound by creating a clean approximation of the cords and a resonance that will sound great and project easily. Say “Mm-mmm. Mmm-hmm.” up and down your vocal range, from low to middle to high and back again, 10 times.

What should I do for glowing my skin I drink amla juice, but now I stopped drinking it, I use to drink lots of water, is it enough to glow my skin? I don't want to apply any mask, scrub, paste, etc. On my face! Is water enough to get my skin glow or can you suggest me some other things to get my skin glowing? The one thing I don't want to do is applying anything on my face, it makes me irritating and annoying! If you have other options like water please suggest me I will be thankful of you!

Drinking water is a very good thing, if you have been doing this for more than two months, there must have been some improvement with your glow. But, you cannot expect your skin to glow any further just by drinking water. There are certain foods that improve your skin from inside or you can simply start with tablet nutraskin (natural skin therapy) to make your skin glow. If you do not like to apply face packs, make sure you cleanse and moisturise your skin daily.

Sir please help me and I am not professional smoker I have smoked 5 times in my life and this time its worst. Hoping for sooner reply.

Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, It is nice of you to come out with the smoking of joint and weed openly. All your symptoms are due to Cannabis. If you have a bad trip, your chances of repeating it and becoming dependent is low. This is the time to stop the routine cigarettes too. Plan for it step by step in the next 12 weeks.

Your sleep patterns are not healthy for you. Addiction to social media is also a debilitating condition. But your desire to dominate other people is what is called the power struggle: in every situation of two or more people power struggles will go on and that it not harmful unless you take it too far. This world is a 'dog-eat-dog world' and there is a lot of competition and we must be prepared for the worst. So if you want to dominate others do it by equipping yourself well. Here are several things you can do to further that goal: study well, speak well, be physically and emotionally fit, dress well, become well-groomed, be presentable, have good habits, conduct yourself well; do a personality development course, attend good conversational skills course, join the Toastmasters Club, do a personal grooming course, practise elocution etc. You must eat well, sleep well, and do regular exercise. These may all appear unnatural to you but these are things that everybody wants to and wishes to do to get on in life. Absolutely not harm in it at all.

Hi, I am working as a Manager with a leading software company in Hyderabad. Mam, I have good professional life (I am managing a team of 30 people in Hyd) and reports directly to Executive board members. I am married, and my partner is working as a manager in a software firm and we are blessed with a kid of current age 5 years. The exact problem that I am facing is, unknown fears while my turn comes to present my content/ I need to speak on stage. To be very precise about my problem, I am not fearing of English vocabulary / content / the audience. I am very confident on my vocabulary, stage mannerisms, or my content and body language. But, What exactly I fear is my turn to present. I mean if I am the 5th person to present on stage, My heart beat will be increased from normal to High, when the 3rd person is presenting and it further increases to very high when the 4th person is presenting and it goes rapidly high when they are announcing / calling me on stage for my turn to present. When I go on the stage / when I actually start to speak, I can sense that my heart is beating to its maximum and I can even sense it on my shirt, My mouth gets dried, and I start getting serious shivering, and the other person who is opposite to me, can easily sense that, I am highly nervous / anxious. I am considered as a good orator from my childhood and have actively presented many papers in seminars during my engineering. I can recall that, I had this problem during engineering, but it was very minimum. But from the day 1 of my career, this problem started growing and has become giant in my head now. Kindly note that, I will have these symptoms, only if I have a situation, where I need to present in an order (Waiting for my turn to present). But, if its a regular team meeting, or unplanned presentation an I am supposed to talk, I will be the best presenter. This problem is currently hitting me to the core, I started feeling highly nervous due to which, it started affecting my personal life as well. I was once very cool, But now, I am getting easily frustrated, getting anger easily, shouting on my wife, kid and even to my parents sometimes. I visited a doctor 2 years ago and has suggested me BETACAP TR-40 MG, and prescribed to take the pill a 30 mins to 1 hour before the presentation. I tried this from 2 years and the success rate is 60%. Sometimes, I haven't got any nervousness symptoms after taking the pill. But sometimes, even if I take 2 pills also, I am getting highly nervous. Kindly help me. Thank you.

Dear Lybrate user This seems to be an anxiety and its psychological. It can be treated Psychotherapy specially CBT. This has become a habit which needs to be changed. We can also find the cause of the problem and the anxiety associated with it can be removed easily. Take deep breaths before your presentation (belly breathing). Drink some water also. Try to notice the thoughts which come in your mind when you are waiting for your turn and try to challenge them. Do relaxation exercises or meditation or yoga. Also visualize yourself not having any anxiety once or twice a day. You can contact me for more information and a free consultation. Take care. Good luck.

This is possible if you had not sought counseling while on medication. You can still do so now and find that there are a lot of coping mechanisms that need to be imbibed to make good your recovery. If the counselor thinks that you may need to meet with the doctor again then go ahead and do so but do not discontinue the counseling at any cost. I am quite hopeful that with this approach you will do justice to your treatment and come through with real stability.

I'm usually a calm person but past two years anger issues started last 6 months whenever I get angry at someone I imagine of slapping them and hurting them in my mind but I won't react and now if I say something and people around me get annoyed or irritated of what I say I get angry on myself and beat myself and most of the time I try to control my anger just talk to myself like "what's wrong with me why people around me get irritated for a simple mistake I do etc. And sometimes when I think of all these things I start to cry I don't know what to do.

Homeopath, Akola
Don't suffer in loneliness. You are an introvert and you are reading too much in your own and others' behaviour. Don't blame yourself. Try to take things as they are. If there is lack of tuning between persons around you, try to shrug things smilingly instead of feeling otherwise. Keep yourself busy as much as possible in to areas of your interest. This will decompress you a lot. Anger is a sign of helplessness where one tends to react unreasonably out of frustration. Save yourself from such feeling of helplessness and find ways to overcome such feelings by positive mindset.

I wanted to be an actress now wherever I go I fall in love with men who resemble some actors unintentionally without reciprocation and I can't do any work except thinking about them this is a repeated pattern.I won't like ordinary men so I am still single, I am 36.Victim of abuse by father n domestic violence n ill treatment by relatives n classmates. Could not study after graduation. Suffer homelessness and on injection of clopixol depot fortnight.Women generally dislike me men try to take advantage please suggest proper rehabilitation center n cure.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I think your aspiration to become an actress had failed but you may be still indulging in the fantasy of that failed desire by at least wanting to be in love with a celebrity in the film industry. Your adulation of the celebrity is to identify with their achievements and a desire to own them. These are additive in nature; to the personality and the glamour they enjoy. This failure can be very disturbing. Together with that the childhood abuse and the ill-treatment by others in life has been disquieting at the least. This has all contributed to the weight gain and to the mental disturbance. Now it is important to do the right thing first, for the mental illness, and to deal with the pain of all the abuse. Then the understanding of love and the dearth of it in your life has to be considered and the distortions cleared. It is possible that you might be mixing up sex with love, and innocuously offering it seeking love but the men take advantage of this need and hunger of yours failing to recognize the actual deprivation. You may unwittingly use seduction with males, who will fall gullibly to the guile, but that this same thing may invite the disapproval and disdain of the female companions. All this can get very complicated, if not properly understood. Your medical treatment must be supported by some psychotherapy to adequately address all the psychosocial aspects of your situation. Ideally, you should spend time in a rehabilitation center, and in residential settings to work out these issues in an intense one-to-one treatment. I have no idea of any such center in my experience so far. However, I suggest that you do the next best thing, by seeking help in an outpatient setting. I recommend you work with a female therapist before transferring to a male therapist, ideally and eventually, for a satisfactory recovery.
