Living Well With Type 2 Diabetes

MD - Medicine
General Physician,
Living Well With Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that affects the way your body deals with glucose in the blood and the glucose absorbed from the food you ingest. Diabetes is generally of two basic types - Type 1 and Type 2. Apart from these two types, there are other kinds as well including gestational diabetes that some women suffer from during their pregnancy. Type 2 Diabetes is a condition where the cells of the body do not make proper use of the insulin being produced by the pancreas.

Living with this kind of a condition may seem debilitating at first, but here are a few things you can do to make life easier despite Type 2 Diabetes.

  • Weight: Being overweight is one the foremost side effects and sometimes, even cause of Type 2 Diabetes. To make your life easier, you can lose weight so that the complications involved are that much less. Diet and exercise are key for appropriate weight loss. Watch your diet so that you can eliminate high cholesterol as well. This can ensure that unnecessary amount of fat does not stick to your muscles and organs, which in turn will fuel better functioning of the same.
  • Health Care Providers: Being fit with Type 2 Diabetes does not merely mean staying within your normal weight range. It also means taking care of your medication and insulin doses so that you can function in a more normal way. Make your family and friends your support system as you go about life so that people can help you and recognize symptoms when something goes wrong. Be in constant touch with your health care providers and the general physician you see so that they are in the loop and you know exactly what to do in case there is an emergency.
  • Exercise: Being active is a great way to keep your blood sugar level low even as you ensure that you heart is in good condition. This will further eliminate the risk of heart disease, hypertension and high cholesterol. Sweating it out also helps the insulin work in a better manner within your body.
  • Balance: While you may be asked to remove sugar from your diet, there is no need to stay away from proper meals. You can have a fiber rich diet that also has plenty of fruits and vegetables so that you get your due nutrition to maintain a fit body.

Watching your lifestyle is the main thing you need to do if you are suffering from Type 2 Diabetes.

hi, I am a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator and a doctor (general physician) who will help you in your diabetes problem. Do let me know your hba1c value? also you need to provide me your daily food intake details. There are many lifestyle and dietary guidelines that can be followed: take high fiber prescribed diet which includes soluble fibre like apple, isabgol etc. Get more physical activity by prescription from a registered dietitian eat a balanced diet which includes whole grains and excludes all refined products like maida as prescribed by a registered dietitian, if you're overweight, diabetes prevention may hinge on weight loss. Every pound you lose can improve your health, and you may be surprised by how much. Participants in one large study who lost a modest amount of weight around 7 percent of initial body weight and exercised regularly reduced the risk of developing diabetes by almost 60 percent. I being a registered dietitian and doctor have been successfully helping patients with their diabetes problem. I will also prescribe medicines that will speed up the time to achieve your weight management goals. Do reply back for private consultation.

Increase thirst, increased frequency of urination are some initial symptoms of diabetes but it can vary from being completely asymptomatic to non specific symptoms like weakness, tingling in feet, dry mouth, blurry vision, burning during urination. You need to follow a healthy lifestyle to prevent such metabolic diseases. Type 1 usually occurs at younger age due to insulin deficiency and treated with insulin injections. Type 2 usually in adults due to insulin resistance and treated with oral medicines.

Hypothyroidism is condition which needs to be treated for life time with thyroxine tablets, as mentioned by you. This is a hormone deficiency condition, can only be treated by replacing that hormone from outside. Foods to avoid include soya and soya containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, mustard and coffee. Consume more green vegetables (other than mentioned), fruits, use whole grain flour for breads (rotis), use more of onions garlic.

Can the removal or replacement of the pancreas gland through operation totally stop diabetes.

Can the removal or replacement of the pancreas gland through operation totally stop diabetes.
Mr. lybrate-user, Transplant of pancreas is a possibility to correct diabetes or cure it. However, whatever damage that might have happened earlier will not be set right. Secondly so far this procedure has not become a great success. Plus getting a pancreas form a doner is also one of the main obstacles. So in the present situation the transplant is just a theoretical possibility. Thanks.

Check for your blood sugar level. One in empty stomach. Another two hours after a heavy breakfast. Also give mirning first sample of urine for routine test. Looking at the report it will be possible to confirm. Avoid drinking much water in the night. Take small sips only. This will bring down the frequency.

The benefits of regular physical activity are: Lower blood glucose levels Better response to insulin Strengthened heart activity Improved blood circulation Lowered cholesterol Improved physical fitness Feeling better People of all ages should include a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity of moderate intensity on most, if not all, days of the week. A regimen of physical activity must be planned judiciously when diabetes complications are present. How to get started Look for an activity that you enjoy. Make sure it's right for your current level of fitness. Walking may be a good way to get started. It is convenient and low in cost. All you need to get started are cotton socks and a pair of supportive shoes that fit well. What will a complete exercise plan look like Flexibility - stretch before you exercise. Resistance Training - this includes lifting light weights to build calorie-burning muscle mass. Aerobic activity - walking, dancing, swimming or biking to burn calories and reduce heart risk. How to keep going Make walking or your other exercise activities part of your daily routine. Finding someone to walk or exercise with can help make your workout more enjoyable. When exercise is enjoyable and social, it is its own reward. This may help you stay motivated. Know that everyone's exercise plans lapse occasionally. Instead of being discouraged, use this time as an opportunity of review your goals. Try to recommit as soon as possible to an enjoyable and healthy level of activity. Corn is a very rich source of starch (carbohydrate) starches raise the level of blood sugar. So it is advisable not to eat corn if diabetic. Once in a while it can come as a treat.

Why do my lower body increases when my thyroid raise I have done thyroid and I lost, 34 kgs it happens with me after ...
Lybrate-user, if hypothyroidism is not well controlled then weight reduction is difficult. To achieve very good control tsh levels should come around 3 to 4 milli units /l. With 7.5 milli units/l weight reduction is not possible, because it shows that hypothyroidism is not in control. Once you achieve that then efforts to reduce weight will be successful. Plus you will have to take a restricted diet giving exact calories based on ideal body weight, plus regular exercise of over 1 hour a day. Thanks for the question.

Sir,
last year I had fasting sugar: 174, after lunch he had sugar: 354. After 1 year with out using any medicines now...
If sugar levels mentioned by you are correct then I am unable to explain the phenomenon. If sugar level has returned to normal then it is really very good. I can only suggest get a hba1c% test done and also keep testing sugar levels once in 2 - 3 months just to keep a track. Continue doing regular exercise.

If a person is suffering with diabetes. Do we can say that the possibility for heart disease for him is higher?
Mr. Lybrate-user, you are right, when a person is having diabetes, his chances of getting a heart related problem increase exponentially. This becausediabetes affects coronary arteries and a lot of silent heart attacks are reported in diabetes patients.
