Hi. Swelling after ACL surgery may persist for a month or so. No need to worry much as long as you don't have any fever or redness around the wound site. Also once you have started physiotherapy swelling also increases. This should subside with leg elevation, giving rest and ice fomentation. This should help you.

Hi lybrate-user, this is very unfortunate. You should try some Ayurvedic therapies if you can. One of the main advantages of Ayurvedic treatment for bone fracture or dislocation, is its external and internal use of herbal medicines in various forms, which shows great results in reducing pain, healing wounds, and joining bones. Some ingredients used when making such medicines are egg white, wheat flour, milk, ghee and sugar, along with herbal pastes such as Kasamarda and Kumari. Oil massage therapies are also a popular method adopted in Ayurveda, in shaping the bones back to their original form. Methods such as steaming, and application of herbal pastes, also reduce pain and inflammation. Depending on the condition of the patient, Panchakarma Therapy is also done. In cases where fracture has occurred on marma points (vital areas), special attention is required. Only expert Ayurvedacharyas can manage and treat complicated multiple fractures. The main aim of the treatment process in fractures is to restore functional abilities of the individual. In cases of bone problems occurring due to old age and chronic diseases, treatment is difficult and may take longer time, but, the process of healing is quicker in young people. The duration of rehabilitation also depends on the type of fracture, and associated soft tissue involvement, location of fracture, and method of stabilization. Depending on the stability of fracture, motion exercises may be recommended for adjacent joints, followed by strengthening exercises. Once, the healing is restored completely, the individual can continue with regular activities of daily living. Hope this helps. Good luck.

MY mother ,above 75 years ,recently undergone ( 2 moths back ),for DHS fracture /dislocation hippe joint ,is on bed ,she developed Fissure in annus ,unbearable pain ,is there any solution .Without surgery ?

Dear Your mother has fissure which is due to constipation and passage of hard faeces, Suggest: 1.Give emollient laxative like Duohaklax or cremaffin plus at night. 2.Give naturolax granules one sachet with a glass full of water at night or Isabgol powder 3-4 tsf in glass full of water at night. 3.Apple Zinc ointment inside and twice a day. This is a castor oil based ointment like a nappy rash cream. 4. Increase fluid intake 5.Five high fibre diet in form of green leafy vegetable, fruits like papaya, banana , mango etc. 6.If she can do some exercise in the bed 7. If she is still constipated then use suppository for toilet 8 If that doesn't work then use enema which are available in market regularly. Dr. Kiran Mehta.

I am 70 years old. Since last few days my knees r paining. Now a days not allowing me even to walk a little distance....
Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

Ayurveda For Arthritis

Inflammation and resultant pain in the joints are usually the basic tenets of Arthritis. This joint disorder can be painful and often, a debilitating one. It can also make the joints stiff. There are many ways of dealing with this problem, but with Ayurveda, one can get to the root cause of the ailment and its presence. This helps in taking a well rounded holistic approach towards treating it with ancient know how that revolves around herbs and other natural substances which have great medicinal value, lifestyle changes, diet, exercise and Yoga, oil massages, and other methods. Arthritis is known as Sandhivata in Ayurvedic jargon.

Read on to find out how Ayurveda can help in dealing with Arthritis.

  • Herbs: One can make use of various herbs that contain Linoleic Acid to help in providing lubrication to the joints so as to prevent pain and stiffness. These herbs include Borage seed oil which is extracted from Borage seed, Evening Primrose oil, Blackcurrant seed oil, Capsaicin, Curcumin, Feverfew, Flaxseed oil and a standard Ayurvedic concoction that combines Ashwagandha, Gugulla, ginger, cumin and haldi or turmeric. These substances can help in treating the joints that are suffering from the pain of Arthritis.
  • Diet: In Ayurveda, to treat ailments like Arthritis, it is usually recommended that a patient should start by flushing out the body toxins from within. Diet is one of the ways in which this can be done. A detoxification diet to clean the colon would be one of the foremost ways of doing a cleanse. Further, in one's daily diet, there should be a good dose of vegetables, fruits and other juices. Also, one must have plenty of herbs and spices, which can be used to season the food. Curd should generally be avoided and garlic should be used liberally. The various properties that help in an inside out cleanse that will help the system function in a better manner so that the treatment of ailments is also effectively supported.
  • Exercise: In Ayurveda, a certain amount of daily exercise, which spans at least 45 minutes to one hour, is a must. A pattern of healthy eating, restful sleep and exercise is what usually helps in treating ailments like Arthritis. For this ailment specifically, light exercise like walking is recommended. Various Yoga asanas that involve sitting, standing, balancing and lying down poses as well as restful poses will also help in treating knee, shoulder and lower back pain specifically. Also, mustard oil massages can help in reducing the pain.

These are the few ways in which Ayurveda can help Arthritis patients live a more normal life with minimal pain
