Rhinoplasty - Know All About It!

Rhinoplasty - Know All About It!

Rhinoplasty, more commonly known as nose surgery, is a cosmetic form of operation designed to change the shape and size of the nose.

A rhinoplasty can effectively change the size and width of the nose to complement the facial balance. It also helps improve nasal symmetry efficiently enhancing your facial features.

How is the surgery performed?
You can opt for either general anesthesia or local anesthesia for the surgery. The surgery is generally an outpatient procedure, but occasionally patients are asked to stay in the hospital overnight post the surgery.

The operation involves an incision which is made for easy access to the cartilage and bones of the nose. These incisions are generally placed inside the nose, so that they do not appear as scar marks after the surgery is done. Removal or replacement of the bone or cartilage depends on the demands of the restructuring of the nose. Once the reshaping of the nose is done, the nose tissue is put back into place and a splint is temporarily placed to support the new structure of the nose. The splint is removed once the nose heals.

Precautions to take after a nose surgery

After a nose surgery, the area around your nose will stay swollen and bruised for a considerable period of time. Thus you have to ensure that-

  1. You get ample amount of rest
  2. Use cold compresses over the swollen nose area, this will reduce the swelling and ease the pain
  3.  Do not indulge in relatively vigorous physical activity for sometime
  4.  Take you medicines regularly

Risks of nose surgery

Every surgery or medical procedure involves certain risks, and so does rhinoplasty. Along with some puffiness and bruising around the eye and nose region, you may also experience-

  1. Some amount of bleeding
  2. Injury to the septum area
  3. Irritation of the skin and skin problems
  4. Infections
  5. Nasal blockage due to swelling in the inner nasal area
  6. Complications resulting from anesthesia

Although there are certain risks to rhinoplasty, the surgery is considerably safe and the results are quite permanent.

Hi. You are possibly suffering from Gynecomastia, a condition very common in Indian men. This is due to the presence of underlying gland tissues. The only solution is to get rid of the excess glands is using liposuction and gland excision. There are no non surgical alternatives that can address the issue promisingly. Chemical Peels - What Conditions Do They Treat?

Chemical Peels - What Conditions Do They Treat?

Are you bored with how your skin appears? Well, there are techniques to give it a new life. Your skin’s natural baby look can be back with techniques like chemical peels. It is a technique that can improve the appearance of your skin. A chemical solution is put on the skin. It causes the skin to exfoliate and later beef off. The new skin looks smooth and it is free from wrinkles. The new skin is more sensitive to the sun on a temporary basis. There are three types of chemical peel:

  1. Superficial or Lunchtime Peel: In this technique, alpha-hydroxy acid or some mild acid is made to penetrate into the outer layer of skin. This exfoliates the skin. It helps to deal with mild skin discoloration and rough skin.

  2. Medium Peel: Glycolic or trichloroacetic acid is put on the skin so as to penetrate the middle layers of skin. It removes damaged skin cells. The treatment is used for improving age spots, fine lines and wrinkles.

  3. Deep Peel: Trichloroacetic acid or phenol is used for penetrating the middle layer of the skin. It will help in removing moderate lines, and shallow scars.

What must be done before considering a chemical peel?

It is always advisable to consult a dermatologist first before taking up the decision to try a chemical peel.

What are the skin flaws that can be treated by chemical peels?

Chemical peels are used for treating a number of skin problems, including the following ones:

  1. Acne scars

  2. Ageing skin

  3. Crow's feet

  4. Scars

  5. Sun damaged skin

  6. Sagging skin

  7. Wrinkles

Who should not take up a chemical peel?

It is generally believed that light-haired and fair-skinned people can go for chemical peels. It doesn’t go well with dark-skinned patients. It is also not recommended for people living with some infection.

Facelift Surgery - Know Its Complication!

Facelift Surgery - Know Its Complication!

The skin has underlying protein layers, mainly having collagen and keratin. With age, they lose elasticity and the skin begins to sag. This is where facelift gained popularity with various techniques including Botox, chemical fillers, laser beam treatment, and chemical peels. Read on to know how these minimally invasive, economic options work in literally lifting up the face:

  1. Laser treatment: A beam of laser (usually CO2 laser) is used to make small dots on the skin with normal skin left untouched in between. This causes tightening of the tissue underneath, producing a firmer appearance which can take off years from the appearance.
  2. Botox: This accidentally discovered neurotoxin is used to treat wrinkles and sagging skin. The sagging areas of the face (usually forehead and nasal folds) are injected with Botox. The wrinkles are gone and the fine lines are lost, and the result can last for up to 8 months.
  3. Fillers: Chemicals which are naturally present in the skin like hyaluronic acid and collagen extracts are injected into the skin to fill up the underlying skin and produce a fuller, younger appearance. The lower cheeks, corners of the eyes and mouth, and area under the eyes are commonly treated by this method.
  4. Chemical peeling: The top layer is often peeled off using chemicals so that fresh, younger-looking skin is generated. This also helps in reducing pigmentation, reducing forehead lines, de-tanning, and producing a glowing, radiant, younger-appearing skin. It also can be used in other skin conditions including rosacea.

While each of these is widely popular, they come with a set of potential risks and complications.

  1. Anaesthetic reaction: Most of the above procedures require local anaesthesia and there could be a reaction to this chemical.
  2. Hematoma: There could be small hematomas in the underneath layers of the skin, which will take some time but dissolve on its own
  3. Numbness/tingling: The face has a rich nerve supply, and if any of these are touched, there could be numbness or tingling or even loss of sensation in some cases. While some may improve with time, there also could be permanent damage
  4. Scarring: In chemical peels, there could be minor incisions and therefore scarring can happen.
  5. Delayed healing: Depending on the person’s immunity, healing could be delayed, and as it is the face, social and/or professional life can be affected.
  6. Infection: As with any surgery, chances of infection arise and can be managed with antibiotics.
  7. Bleeding: As most of these are non- or minimally-invasive, chances of severe bleeding are less but still persist.
  8. Bruising: The face, in the immediate postop period, can have a bruised appearance, which will improve over 4 to 5 days.

Body Contouring - Get That Perfect Sculpted Look!

Body Contouring - Get That Perfect Sculpted Look!

Not sure if there is anyone who is happy with their image - different people have different complaints. Fat thighs, fat upper arms, too thin legs, sagging breasts, pot belly, the list is just too long. While exercise and diet can be used to achieve overall fitness levels, they cannot produce the body shape that you have in mind (simulating your celebrity body part maybe). Almost all complaints revolve around the excess fat (in most cases) and about the quality of the skin.

However, there are various surgical methods which can produce results that are amazingly quick, effective, and safe.

Body contouring is usually done by removing excess fat deposits and skin from various parts of the body. The skin also gets tightened during the process, also reducing cellulite. While most women complain about thighs and hips, men complain about their stomach area. Some of the common body sculpting procedures includes:

  1. Arm lifts: With age, there is excessive fat accumulation and sagging of the upper arm, which can be corrected by removing excess fat. Contrarily, thin arms can be helped by using biceps implants.
  2. Tummy tucks: The excess skin and fat is removed from the tummy area and the muscles are tightened to produce a firmer look
  3. Thigh lift: Another common area of concern, the tone is improved by removing excess, loose skin.
  4. Pectoral implants: Can be used in men who desire muscular chests.
  5. Butt lifts and butt implants: These are used to alter the shape of the buttocks, either reducing it or firming it up.

In all these body contouring procedures, liposuction is the common technique.

Is it for you? If you are in overall good health with good thick and elastic skin, go for it. However, have realistic expectations by having a detailed discussion with the doctor. It will definitely help in fat removal, cellulite reduction, and skin tightening; however, the key is to set a common goal and work towards it. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Blepharoplasty - What All Should You Know?

Blepharoplasty - What All Should You Know?

The surgical procedure to correct the appearance of eyelids is called blepharoplasty. The correction is done by removing extra skin, fat and muscle that make the eyelids droop.

Uses-

Eyelids start drooping when the muscles supporting your eyelids weaken as you grow older. Excess fat accumulates below and above your eyelids as a result, which leads to eye bags and droopy eyelids.

Besides making you look older than your age, droopy eyelids can also affect your vision. Blepharoplasty can improve your vision and give your eyes a polished look at the same time. Some other benefits include:

  • Excess deposits of fat that make eyelids look puffy are removed with the help of blepharoplasty.
  • Eye bags are reduced.
  • Drooping eyelids which end up revealing the sclera (the white part in your eyeballs) are fixed.
  • Fine wrinkles and excess skin around lower eyelids are corrected.

Blepharoplasty is usually combined with procedures such as skin resurfacing, face-lift or brow-lift.

Risks-

Blepharoplasty, like every other surgical procedure, has certain risks, which include—

  1. Bleeding and infection
  2. Irritated, dry eyes
  3. Trouble closing eyes and other associated problems
  4. Prominent scarring
  5. Eye muscle injury
  6. Skin discoloration
  7. Follow-up surgery is needed
  8. Short-term blurry vision, or in unusual cases, loss of vision
  9. General risks associated with surgery such as blood clots, anaesthetic reactions, cardiac and other coronary problems.

Preparation-

Before the surgery can be scheduled, a surgeon and ophthalmologist will be consulted to record your medical history and discuss your expectations about the surgery. Then, before the procedure can begin, the following steps will be followed:

  1. First, you will be examined physically; your doctor will test your tear ducts and take measurements of your eyelids.
  2. Second, your eyes will be examined and your vision will be tested.
  3. Lastly, your doctor will take photographs of your eyes which will facilitate and guide him/her through the course of the surgery.

Results-

The effects of blepharoplasty are long-lasting and the corrections are permanent. Durable sun protection of the eyes helps in maintaining the corrections made.

Although, you can get excellent results from one surgery, sometimes you may need multiple procedures to achieve the desired look. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Hair Transplant - What Should You Know?

Hair Transplant - What Should You Know?

Hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness is a condition that affects both men and women. Surgical hair transplantation is the only solution for restoring the lost hair in pattern baldness when medical hair restoration does not offer you a good hair re-growth.

If you have well-defined and clearly established areas or patterns of baldness on the crown with healthy dense coverage of hair at the sides and the back of the head, you are probably suitable for a hair transplant surgery. Hair that is transplanted in the frontal region of the skull generally offers the best results. However, a hair transplant procedure can also be carried out on any other area of your head if you have some bald patch there.

It is best to have detailed information about the hair transplant procedure before you make plans to undergo a surgery. It is only after you have read through all the information that you can understand and appreciate the significance of surgical hair restoration. The information will also help you decide whether you are the right candidate for the hair transplant surgery. Receiving a hair transplant can improve your appearance and self-confidence.

Good candidates for a hair transplant include:

  1. men with male-pattern baldness

  2. women with thinning hair

  3. anyone who has lost some hair from a burn or scalp injury

Hair replacement isn’t a good option for:

  1. women with a wide-spread pattern of hair loss throughout the scalp

  2. people who don’t have enough “donor” hair sites from which to remove hair for transplant

  3. people who form keloid scars (thick, fibrous scars) after injury or surgery

  4. people whose hair loss is due to medication like chemotherapy

The Two Types of Procedures-

It's worth noting that there are new surgical techniques involved in hair transplants:

  1. FUE - Follicular Unit Extraction: The hairs are individually extracted from the back of the head and re-planted across the area. This is a lengthy, pain-staking process but the result is minimal scarring and a very natural-looking hairline.
  2. FUT - Follicular Unit Transplantation: This technique involves taking a larger area or 'strip' of hair from the back of the head, dividing it into smaller units and then re-planting those units in the desired area of hair loss. Scarring can be slightly more conspicuous at the back of the head as a larger area has been removed but an expert surgeon will minimise incision marks to ensure rapid healing.

Hair transplants do, of course, utilise your own natural hair and re-growth can be expected within 4 weeks of surgery. Great care must be taken during your recovery period to protect the newly-transplanted hair. However, once it is deemed safe to resume normal activities, the results can be life-transforming. A successful hair transplant is permanent and can restore confidence and self - esteem. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

None of the surgeries come without risk. In the hands of a trained team, these risks can be effectively offset.
