42 is perimenopausal time, means a few years before and after the periods stop at age ranging from 40-50 but women do live a healthy life till 100+with age related problems only. During this phase called menopausal syndrome the woman may suffer from either of these 5 symptoms / few of symptoms / none of symptoms. 1) periods stop & reproductive hormones decline and she is more prone to heart attacks 2) osteoporotic bones, hollow bones with less calcium 3) depression and empty nest syndrome as her own children are either married or leading their own lives and she feels unwanted 4) organs sag like skin shows some wrinkles, there is tendency to have urinary symptoms as bladder has less power in its muscles to retain urine for longer hours. 5) tendency to put on weight @ at least 1/2 kg per year. The woman can keep busy with her own hobbies and skills, she can continue to exercise & be careful about diet. Take supplements of calcium and vitamin d & multivitamins. Eat lots of fresh seasonal vegetables and fruits according to her constitution, drink toned milk & curds & reduce salt, sugar & fats. Get her checked for heart and bllod tested for lipids & sugar. Good to know that your own doctor has declared her as normal. Reassure her and this passing phase will be over soon.

Complications of High Blood Pressure Persistent high blood pressure can result in multiple complications.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Some people with hypertension may react with alarm when they check their blood pressure at home or at the drugstore and the reading is elevated. It's not unusual for people with an isolated finding of elevated blood pressure to show up at the local emergency department with sudden concern, but in many cases, the real concern is not a single high reading, but the cumulative effect of persistent uncontrolled hypertension. Hypertension is a risk factor for many negative health outcomes, including heart failure, coronary artery disease, stroke, kidney disease, peripheral artery disease and hypertensive retinopathy, a disease of the eye. Hypertension is also associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, which is why the united states preventive services task force has issued a recommendation for diabetic screening in people with high blood pressure. Good control of blood pressure results in a rapid reduction of risk for cardiovascular disease.

Hypertensive heart disease results from changes in both the structure of the heart and blood vessels and their function as the body adapts to abnormally high blood pressure. If you can imagine the heart as a pump operating against a fluid circuit, picture the increased work of that pump if pressure within the circuit is increased. Some of the changes caused by persistent high blood pressure can be partially reversed with treatment using ace inhibitor medications.

Hypertension results in wear and tear of vital organs and vessels as a result of mechanical stress.

Blood vessels have mechanisms to regulate blood flow throughout the body, and when high blood pressure occurs, the blood vessels constrict in initial response. Eventually, the walls of the blood vessels thicken and tissue damage occurs, resulting in hardening of the vessel walls.

Hypertensive disease of the eye is known as hypertensive retinopathy. In the retina of the eye, changes in the blood vessels eventually result in disruption of the integrity of the vessel, and blood or fatty acids may leak onto the delicate retinal tissue. This results in permanent vision change, and it's very preventable.

Complications of stroke can be due to hemorrhage of the blood vessels that supply the brain, or, more frequently, can result from poor blood flow through arteries damaged by persistent high blood pressure. Approximately 85% of strokes are ischemic, or due to poor blood flow. Another manifestation of hypertensive disease that affects the brain is hypertensive encephalopathy. This condition refers to a change in mental status, frequently accompanied by headache and nausea, that results from swelling in the brain caused by alterations in blood flow at very high blood pressure. This condition is associated with malignant hypertension, or hypertensive emergency.

Persistent high blood pressure is one of the leading causes of chronic kidney disease, frequently requiring dialysis. Blood is filtered through the kidneys, and when the small blood vessels of the kidney are damaged by chronic uncontrolled hypertension, the body becomes unable to filter waste. People with kidney damage eventually spend hours hooked to dialysis machines that can remove waste products from their bloodstream, or they may require a kidney transplant. In either case, prevention of the complication is preferable and less complex.

Unfortunately, it is easy to underestimate the cumulative effects of high blood pressure, since the damage is asymptomatic initially. It's important to recognize the inevitable consequences of ignoring persistent high blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, it's important to realize the silent damage occurring over time if your blood pressure is not adequately treated. If you have a high blood pressure reading, you should repeat measurement on two more occasions. If your blood pressure remains above the level your doctor has suggested, it is essential to follow up. There are many excellent and affordable medications available for treatment of hypertension. Some people require a combination of drugs to maintain control. Whatever the case, the inconvenience of treatment is far exceeded by the benefits to your health over a lifetime.

High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style .do meditation, yoga, Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take plenty of water in day time. And 1 glass of water before bed at night. use flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain. GARLIC,. Cod liver oil. Take anti cholesterol medicines . Cap. Ecosprin gold-10 at night daily.

Hi. My husband is 34 years old. He has been diagnosed with hypertension. Medicines were not able to bring it under control. It was 220/140 .diastolic never came down below 180. He has been hospitalized now. Echocardiogram says that thickness of muscle in heart has increased. However everything else is normal. Renal Doppler also fine. I am taking care of him alone. Dr. please tell me the severity. And is it reversible. Will the thickness go back to normal.

The thickness and the heart muscles is side effect of chronic high blood pressure for a long time it's similar to muscle hypertrophy in the biceps when you do a lot of exercise daily which means that because your heart had to push against a high pressure it needs more muscles to perform this work that's why the muscles are thick. And initially these thick muscles obviously have more power to pump the blood against the high blood pressure in the blood vessels but as the muscles of the heart become thicker and thicker they keep expanding inside the heart decreasing the filling capacity so so you can imagine if this keeps on happening although the force of pumping blood will be higher but slowly the amount of blood the heart can pump will decrease and that is the cause of all the problems in hypertrophic heart diseases. Unfortunately it's not reversible but with medications and proper Lifestyle changes you can prevent the progression of the disease and live a fairly normal life. And the most important thing to keep in mind is regularly checking your blood pressure and keeping it under the normal range.

Coffee drinking daily at 2 cups/day. Daily cycling for about 10 kms. My sex life is utterly bad. I have no any major complications, no medication history so far slight knee pains when I sit long. A little financial stress off-late. I have a low nagging back pain since last 20 years. Sciatica problem but have maintained it in control. I have observed a twitching 10-30 seconds pain on my left chest which has now become regular. Had undergone ECG where some small error observed by doctor and put me on ecosprin. My TMT was perfect with no problem at narayana hrudalaya bangalore and I was told I have less than 5% chance of any attack. But this regular pricking twitch keeps giving me the jitters. Doc says if it continues. He may suggest me an anti. Should I need to go in for it. If required I can share scan copy of my ECG. That has raised eyebrow of the doc. Do guide me

Hello, Lybrate user, It would b proper to view your report but ECG report is not enough to assesse the over all condition of d heart to be panic about unless you go through stress test, angiography,Eco, to establish any measure cardiac fault when TMT is normal. Caffiene may trigger Herat problem please consult to your cardiologist, in this regard. If you are on Ecosprin it means some blockage is there or blood need to be thinner but that too, can be established after Eco test, atleast. On the whole your symptoms reveal that you are disturbed due to gastric disorder causing pain in chest and back. U have not mentioned your height & weight. Homoeopathy very well manage the function of heart. Till your report reach me ,please take homoeo medicine: @ Carbo veg 200-6 pills, thrice.
