I feel problem in breathing. It's like I often breathe forcefully. And at the origin of my nose inside it feels like my nose is partially blocked and air is obstructed.

DORL, MBBS
ENT Specialist, Faridabad
If a person suffering from nasal obstruction with mild to moderate nasal allergies it means most probably he is suffering from dns (deviated nasal septum. Nasal obstruction is because of the deviated portion of the nasal septum (this is the bony partition of the nose cavity. Allergies are because of the hampered muco-ciliary mechanism (normally mucus is produced in the nose to moisten our nose cavity, oral cavity, and help food bolus to move downward, this mucus is basically moves on the cilia of the nasal mucosa) this mechanism gets hampered and mucus start accumulating in the nose and sinus cavity which is why thick mucus comes from nose in patients of nose obstruction and person develops sinusiits. When a surgeon removes the nasal septum deviation has not been removed properly the symptoms persists, and patient thinks that the nose bone has again regrown. It is not because of regrowth but because of half surgery done or due to the non removal of the deviation (reason can be many) nowadays nasal septal deviation can be removed endoscopically.

Why should ears get wax. And why it becomes pain. And some times why it loses hearing power.
Wax is a natural secretion of the ear.. It gets pain because of infection.. Infections causes destruction of the ear internal part and it causes hearing loss.

Hi All,
15 days before I had otosclerosis, and now am able hear only 50 percentage of hearing from what I had before ...
Hello, you had undergone right side stepedectomy 15 days back, and after that your hearing power reduced, ok. Wait 2-3 months for complete healing of surgery area and get your ear checked and compare results with previous audiometry results and see the difference. And also you r suffering from noise in the ear due to otosclerosis in both ear. Ringing sound can be reduced after both ear surgery or by avoiding noise exposure, relaxation therapy, stress management etc. And you can also go for hearing aid if hearing power is not improved that much after surgery.

Is Septoplasty the only way to correct deviated nasal septum. What is the cost involved. Thanks in advance.

MBBS, Diploma In Otorhinolaryngology (DLO)
ENT Specialist, Bangalore
Is Septoplasty the only way to correct deviated nasal septum. What is the cost involved. Thanks in advance.
Yes, but the term is very ambiguous as there are many small steps with varied surgical techniques that are included in the term Septoplasty. Modern techniques have made packless endoscopic surgery with new age tools like LASERs, Microdebriders, Coblation Wands have transformed Septoplasty from a horribly painful surgery into a minimally invasive short-stay surgery that allows you to breathe nasally as soon as you regain consciousness in the recovery room! Costs differ depending upon the technologies employed, Implants/packs/splints used, surgical technique and popularity and expertise of the surgeon involved, type of ward opted for, type of hospital, town/city where surgery is done. My patients usually spend about ₹1,00,000 all inclusive, as a daycare admission in an average hospital in Bengaluru. At a corporate hospital, in a Royal Suite, the same surgery could cost you triple the amount easily! In any small town in Karnataka, in a small Nursing Home, you could get Septoplasty done for ₹25,000 too. But remember, you pay peanuts, you will only get monkeys! Select an ENT Surgeon carefully. There are many sites which have comprehensive listings of ENT Surgeons with previous patient feedbacks. Read them carefully, before you select the right surgeon for you.

Cochlear Implants - How Can They Help?

Cochlear Implants - How Can They Help?

Introduction

A cochlear is one of the best electronic medical devices in the modern world. A cochlear implantation is a surgical implantation done on a person who is deaf. This device provides a sense of hearing. It does not amplify the sound like normal hearing aids. It stimulates the auditory nerve directly. It has many advantages and is currently more useful than your average hearing aid.

How can Cochlear implants help?

One may get to hear speech at a normal level. In adults, the result is immediate while in children the rate at which they improve is very slow. In adults, there is a rapid improvement for about three months after which the improvement is slow. Most people can perceive a wide range of sounds varying from soft, medium to loud like the slamming of a door, the barking of dogs, and the ringing telephone. Makes a person more secure and self-reliant. It is very important for a person to be able to hear in case of critical conditions like the fire alarm. Cochlear implant helps with these. One can actually hear auditory voices, even though they are robotic. A person with cochlear implant does not need to lip read.Children can think about studying in mainstream schools instead of studying in a specialized school for deaf people.

Now we will discuss some details about the drawbacks. And, it is not a foolproof method and doesn't guarantee that hearing a person may lose the residue hearing that they have. There are several drawbacks to a cochlear implant.

Let us discuss some down below:

A surgical process involves a lot of money and it has a lot of ordeals associated with it. Therefore, before getting a cochlear implant done ask your specialist to elaborate if it will be of any help to your condition. The cost of maintenance is also very high. It will be difficult for people who are not inborn deaf to cope up with hearing conditions as the sounds are distorted and background noises interfere with the process of hearing. Irritation of your skin, muscle spasms, and even facial paralysis are some of the side effects of this implant. But these are rare conditions. Sounds are translated by the device first and may sound unnatural. It takes time and proper training before a person can be at ease with this condition. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
