Hello. Maintain a right standing and sitting posture, keep your back always straight, avoid carrying weight on back. Hold or carry weight divided equally in both the hands or shoulders (to avoid over straining on one particular hand or shoulder). (Excessive sitting or standing is to be avoided as well don’t carry much weight on shoulders). Exercise: Practice Shavasana or Corpse Pose as it looks like a dead body. If practiced correctly and with full efforts, can relax every body part, relaxing not only the body but also the mind: Spread the legs one to two feet apart, the toes are turned outwards, the heels facing each other, a comfortable distance apart. Bring the arms a little away from the body, palms turned upward. Relax the neck and allow it to turn to the side if it is more comfortable. Close the eyes and focus the attention on the body, breathing normally. Begin focusing each body part and relaxing it, then moving on. Keep the mind focused on relaxation, the breath should be normal. Relax the whole body. Management: -Stretching or activities that place additional strain on the back are discouraged. -Sleeping with a pillow between the knees while lying on one side may increase comfort. -Lying on your back with a pillow under your knees would also relieves pain and no pillow under your head. -Some people seem to benefit from the use of ice or heat. Take care, do not use a heating pad on ‘high’ or place ice directly on the skin. Medication: Take homoeopathic medicines - Arnica 200 and Rhus Tox. 200 - take both of them thrice daily for 1 week. Also, apply Schwabe's Topi-Arnica and Topi MP Gel on the affected area in circular motions gently thrice a day. Get back to me thereafter.

* walking regularly at slow pace without unduly straining helps as it improves blood circulation around knee and eases the joint. *you can use mustard oil for massage which is good in winter season for relieving pain. Eucalyptus oil is also good. Coconut oil will be soothing in summer. Homoeopathy has a good treatment for this without adverse effects. Take bryonia 200---twice daily morning and evening and give feedback after 7 days

Hello, thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. There are many causes of pain in lower back region. It can be due to faulty posture, related to weak muscles, issues with intervertebral disc, narrowing of spinal canal, any bony instability besides many other, so accurate diagnosis is the key to proper management of the condition. I would also like to ask you if it is associated with any other neurological symptoms like numbness, paraesthesias (electrical shock like abnormal sensations) or any weakness in limbs. Please also tell me about any associated symptoms like fever, weight loss etc. What medications you generally take and what has been your treatment history till now for existing problem. Also your sexual life may or may not be related to your spinal pathology, but since this is a long standing story, I advise you to get relevant x rays and mri scans done and send them across to me. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Hi = relax and stay positive. = increase fluid intake. = eat seasonal fruits for natural vitamins = do stretching of hamstring, quadriceps, and calf muscles. = if you are overweight, reduce weight by cycling or swimming as it gives low impact on joints. = do check your calcium and vit. D = apply moist heat pad to affected joint and muscles. If still you dont get relief see a physiotherapist as there are various causes for leg/ joint pain and some test may be required for further investigation. Best wishes.

Motor & Sensory Impairment - How Physiotherapy Can Help?

Master of Physiotherapy (MPT-Neuro), Bachelor of physiotherapy(BPT)

Motor & Sensory Impairment - How Physiotherapy Can Help?

Paraplegia is an impairment in the motor or sensory function of the lower extremities which is usually caused by spinal cord injury or a congenital condition that affects the neural (brain) elements of the spinal canal. This usually occurs after an injury to the nervous system. Paraplegia can involve complete or partial paralysis of the legs and/or the trunk.  The area of the spinal canal that is affected in paraplegia is either the thoracic, lumbar, or sacral regions. In the last 10 years, physiotherapy techniques in case of paraplegia have developed considerably. The aim of physiotherapy is the complete rehabilitation of the patient.

Neurological physiotherapy is specific to your needs as a patient and will be focused towards the specific problems you may face. Rehabilitation depends on the level and severity of the damage to the spinal cord.
Physiotherapy treatment will be determined after an initial assessment of the patient is completed. It includes the following components:

Prevention of complete immobilization: Stretching is the most important exercise as stretching helps to improve flexibility, reduce muscle spasticity and cramps. Stretching helps to move the parts of your body to their full range of motion. Sudden jerking or bouncing should be avoided. Stretching should also be done before, and after other exercises to prevent muscle strain and soreness. It also helps in avoiding injuries.
Exercise to increase muscle strength, and co-contraction: Strengthening exercises which help increase muscle tone, and improve the quality of muscles. This helps improve mobility and provides energy. Strong hip and leg muscles help to lift the legs to walk and carry out daily physical activities.

Activities to improve balance, and coordination of body

  • Maintaining joint range of movement, and preventing muscle shortening and tightness through stretching.
  • Physiotherapy offers advice on how to maintain position to increase comfort, and to improve posture in lying, sitting and standing. This helps to reduce pressure areas, and prevent secondary complications such as pressure sores.
  • Teaching transfers (between wheelchair, bed, car, toilet) help to improve safety and promote independence.
  • Therapeutic electrical stimulation helps to reduce pain, and build muscle strength
  • Functional Electrical Stimulation helps you to walk if you have muscle weakness in the lower legs
  • Parallel bars help to practice walking and balancing in a safe environment
  • Tilt Table (if you are wheelchair bound and would like to stand up, this piece of equipment will stand you up safely to get some weight through your legs with no effort required by the patient) It also helps in improving confidence and building self-esteem.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
